Great lot of Raiders greats.
Wow on the Branch, what a beauty! I thought that was a Topps Mexican for a second, a definite double-take. For those who never saw him play: Branch was a stud, he bypassed the 1972 Olympic Trials to enter the NFL draft. I may be wrong, but think he and Ray Guy were the only Raiders to be on all three Super Bowl Champions (1976?, 1980, and 1983). An awesome weapon from the days when Al Davis could evaluate talent, he'd regularly average 20+ yards a catch per season. |

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...x%20Hannah.jpghttp://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...nah%20back.jpg This is one of the 3 most important Hannah cards there are and there are none graded higher than this PSA 8. Given the significance, scarcity and grade, it becomes the cornerstone of my Hannah collection. Here is a link to my registry, for those who are interested: http://www.psacard.com/PSASetRegistr....aspx?s=199048 |
I was thumbing through my 1951 Topps cards the other day, re-checking my wantlist. Discovered that instead of needing just one card to complete my set, I was missing four! Of course this is almost always better than buying a card and discovering you already had it. So I picked up two of the '51 Topps I needed along with a '52 Bowman Small hit.
I couldn't find out much about Elmer Costa. It looks like he might have been drafted by the Browns in 1952. On September 23, 1951 Arnold Burwitz, along with three other players, stole chickens from the school’s farm. In response the school suspended him immediately from the team and two days later expelled him from school. Billy Howton had a pretty good NFL career playing 12 years with the Packers, Browms, and Cowboys. http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/Scan_14.jpeg http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...can%201_4.jpeg |

Great Hannah Dan! Very nicely centered with great ink for the issue.
Shhh! I've been quietly accumulating the 1977 Topps Mexican set for a couple years now (30% complete). An incredibly difficult set in EX+ condition with a dozen true shortprints, forty or so more short-prints that are difficult. Condition is a big problem with the set, as most cards have gum stains, roller marks, or are poorly cut. A lot of fun to collect until I need to pony up for the Largent rookie :) Picked up these '77 Topps Mexican this month: http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/...psp7x9vtwn.jpg |
Thanks Ty, that's a great lot! Love the Mexis! Do you own a Hannah?
|
I don't have a Hannah, though I have a NM 7 of the man he protected, Steve Grogan. Always liked him, believe he had some rookie touchdown record for awhile, probably from dives over Hannah. Congrats on the pick-up :)
|
Yours are so cool. Empacadores!
|
Thanks Dan. Happy Collecting!

Today a friend and I traveled to a card show at a retirement community. These guys have a collecting club, and host a show three times a year. It was great! And I picked up the last three 1962 Fleer cards to complete my set!

Congrats, Larry! That's fantastic.

I dont think it would hurt to mention the price you got the cards for.
it might be different than the general google |
Rollie, I don't understand your question about my Mexican Hannah. Nice Sonny.
Larry, I love early 60s fleer. Nice cards! |

I like seeing the "POP=1, POP HIGHER=0" in the Hannah collection - nice! So Topps did a Spanish language football set in 77? Was that the only year?
|
Yeah that was the only year. If the edges look funky to you, it's because they were from a perforated sheet. FWIW, not a pop 1, but still none higher and I'm happy to have it. I have about 50 different Hannah cards, and that's my best one, hands down.
|
I had to do it. Here are my most recent 1977 Topps Mexican pick-ups. Two key cards in the set; Walter Payton and Steve Largent (Short Print, Rookie).

Saw a Payton not long ago on eBay..they're just out of my range on price, or I'd of snatched it. Think I've got a basic set. Maybe thinking of Master.

Sweet Mexis!

trying to finish up 1st and 2nd series for 72's..
|
Looking good Shawn! How's the progress?
|
Almost done. Just a handful to go.. I'm basically buying the 3rd series 1:at a time . I have about 3 or 4 high numbers so far.. I'm assuming it'll take me another year .
|
|
Great stuff Adam. I almost missed that the 75 Tatum is signed.

I've been on the other coast for thirty-one days on extended "grandkids babysitting" duties. This AM I visited my local USPO to get my mail. First up 1957 Topps Bart Starr RC (yes cut in half) and Paul Horning RC, these two complete my set!
Then a 1962 Topps Ernie Davis RC which completes my '62 set! Larry http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/Scan_19.jpeg http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...can%201_7.jpeg |
Next a couple of 1972 Topps high numbered cards #343 Joe Namath and #329 John Niland. I know Shawn will appreciate these:) I need just three more high numbers to complete my '72 Topps set!
Larry http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...can%203_5.jpeg http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/Scan_18.jpeg |
Congrats on finishing that 57 set!! That hornung looks in really good condition.
Yes sir, those 72's are nice pickups..maybe on of these days. |
You are a set completing machine, Larry, Congrats!
It's interesting how often you seen the 1957 cards cut in half. They really do look like two nice mini cards when you do that. jeff |
Larry - nice cards. The Hornung is beautiful - I'd grade that one.
|
I haven't had anything to share lately. My pickups are slowing down temporarily. Saving expendable income for my trip to the 100th Indianapolis 500 in late May. I did pick these up recently. I don't get many "big" pickups but was thrilled to get all of these for $40.

The 76 Payton is one of my all time favorite football cards. Nice copy!
|

I might PSA it at some point http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...psh6fwzyoz.jpg |
No way that's a 6 with those corners. Sorry.

Here's a couple of examples of a 3 and 5 i had graded a while back.. The 3 has water damage, and the 5 i think the centering helped with the grade.... i guess.

It was just within the last couple of weeks that I read somewhere that the 1962 Sam Huff is a short print. I've always liked that set because of the black borders and the black and white photos.
Went into one of the LCSs over the weekend and saw one in the display case. He came home to join all of the other cards of former Mountaineers. The Plan was to Spend less than $5 in the Card Shop I tried posting the pic below, but don't know why it's not showing up. Not sure if Flickr links no longer work or what. They have before. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! https://www.flickr.com/photos/245793...posted-public/ |
