Hi Rob,
Beautiful pennant.
A bit OT, but I have a full, unused ticket to the Angels/Orion pre-season game if you would like it as a complimentary piece.
Not Giants, but a solid tie-in.

Who knew the likes of #1 Vander Meer collector and ticket guru Scott Garner keep up with our little thread? :p I’m sure he’s shaking his head over the tassels/spine/font talk.

I’ve sent him a PM in regard to his generous offer…

Cool pennant for sure. It’s interesting how pennants from different countries look so different … Cuba, Japan, even Canadian pennants looked strange in the 1950s, then I think Trench started making CFLs …

Rob, that is a great looking pennant. How do you find these on eBay, since I don't see any reference to the Giants in the listing? Is "Orion pennant" one of your searches, or do you actually comb thru all the pennant listings on eBay? I did a quick "pennant" search, and it popped up over 137,000 listings:eek:

bocca001 09-27-2021 06:59 PM

I happened to see the Orions pennant because jonsstats was the seller and I have him on a saved sellers list.

ooo-ribay 09-27-2021 07:05 PM

A buddy alerted me. No idea how he stumbled upon it.

mrreality68 09-28-2021 05:12 AM

Did not realize you entertaining pennants can be and did not realize they were so collectible.

Many cool and diverse looking pennants

Not real thrilling, but a new (de-tasseled) color for 27 bucks.

perezfan 09-28-2021 03:08 PM

LOVE the purple version.... exciting pickup (to me), and a very underrated pennant!

Funny... I just got one of those too, although it is black and has tassels. I bought it (top pic) because it has the slightly more difficult to find fancy "F" in "Francisco." (compared with bottom pic)

Attended the Philly show last weekend, a few minor acquisitions. I had this in felt but couldn’t pass on the cloth version because the condition was so nice and the color so deep.

I didn’t even notice the “fancy F” variation until just this last year. :p

Thanks to Erik for making these available to me (first two). I think he used a time machine to get them because they are both pristine given their age.

The first is a blue cloth Houston Colts pennant. The second is an early Giants Candlestick pennant, with white spine and tassels. It's an uncommon pennant, and almost always dirty/damaged when it comes up. I already had one with a black spine, but could not pass up the super clean one Erik made available.

Nice ones Marc … really love that Colts pennant, colors are great.

The nice thing about pennants that are so far gone...

You can experiment and get creative. Decided to bring this one back to its roots. Navy and gold.

(Thanks Erik for making it available)

Wow!!!!! How many times did you have to soak it? Was this the “dye on the backside” method?

Really nice job. Were the letters on the pennant cracked at all. In my one experiment with dying, I noticed that the dye came through cracks in the letters and graphics. I've probably just done it wrong but maybe it should only be done with graphics that are in better shape than on my attempt.

mrreality68 10-07-2021 05:12 AM

There is a 1913-14 Christy Mathewson Baseball World Tour Pennant coming up for auction in Heritage with opening bid on 10/28.
No picture yet on it
Any thoughts on it or the history of the "world tour" behind it?

I doubt you did it wrong, Gary. If the paint is cracked, the dye is gonna come through.

Fballguy 10-07-2021 06:53 AM

Very minor cracking and the fabric had faded almost completely white so it was like starting with a clean slate. I actually mixed green dye first and while testing the color on an old towel, the lightbulb came on and I switched to Navy. I couldn't be happier with the results.

Yes Rob...Just sprayed it from the back. The whole process took about 45 minutes or so. I think I saturated it four times, checking progress every 10 minutes or so. This one was easy.

A Christy Mathewson Baseball World Tour Pennant was sold at Christies last year https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-6296494

It isn't going to be a cheap auction....that's for sure.

There's a book about the Grand Tour. You can find it on Amazon

Wow that is an incredible looking pennant and the color is so crisp.

Thanks for sharing the LINK and the description gave my some background on the history of it.

I will keep an eye on it but I can see it will not go cheap.

Has anybody seen union labels on pennants before? I found this article in union labels for vintage clothing which seems somewhat related [emoji2375].I know this isn’t a sports flag, but curious.

Interesting, Erik! I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that no one here has a baseball pennant with a union label...

erikc21 10-10-2021 05:58 PM

Haha - probably not, but figured I’d at least bring it up! [emoji16]

I wonder if this mark conveys that the pennant was manufactured using union labor; or, that it was sold by a vendor that was part of this union? I suspect the latter....

mrreality68 10-11-2021 06:02 AM

Still always amazes me the graphics and the details they can do on pennant’s

You better look into that… ;)

I.J.W.U. = Int'l Jewelry Workers Union.

I found a bunch of vintage pins and metal trinkets bearing this mark ... so, evidently some unknown novelty company once employed I.J.W.U. labor to make a number of products that included felt souvenir pennants.

I've seen a number of Disneyland felt pennants from 1955 through the 1970s, and I can't recall one bearing this mark.

I saw a reference or two online to the Jewelry Union, but didn’t have any luck finding much on it. Appreciate the input!

You guys don’t miss much, so I’m sure most of you saw the lot of 12 pennants that ended tonight. Definitely some condition issues but I think most could look better with a little love. The Rams is definitely a dye candidate.

If anyone did get that lot, let me know. I'm interested in the 49ers pennant.

Pretty nice deal for someone. The Niners is the best of the bunch. That Rams would look great in no time.

I know this is a favorite of one of our prominent members here. And it's a pretty rare bird. But to me it looks unfinished. You could use the analogy that it is to the red version as a negative is to a color photo.

Seems like an odd departure from the typically colorful stadium pennants brought to you by Trench...

You're right. It's not finished. This incomplete work illustrates how Trench (and others) screen printed their polychromatic pennants.

Here, looks like they used two colors for the underbase: red for the text; and white for the artwork. The next step would be to air brush the secondary colors on using a block-out stencil, which would be overlaid atop the stadium/underbase. This part of the process was lengthy because you had to wait for each color to dry before applying another color.

So this pennant wasn't completed. But someone sold it anyhow. Hope the buyer got a discount.... :)

If I was a Reds collector, I would want that as a rare, albeit ugly, variation.

Thanks for the fix, Mark!

I'm still waiting for these to be delivered. Having grown up in Dallas, I was happy to win the Cowboys pennant. It's missing a bit of felt, but it's still a tough one to find.

The blue White Sox is pretty unique and I’ve never seen that Cowboys. I’ve been a Cowboys fan ever since the Ice Bowl but have never collected their stuff.

I flat out LOVE this pennant, lucky to have it in almost flawless condition. Also unique how the name is displayed, love the script. Fonts are similar to this Orioles pennant from same time period.

I don’t know of another white stadium pennant. The Tigers had a late 60s version but I think that’s it.

thetahat 10-17-2021 11:08 AM

Been discussed before but to my knowledge these teams did not have a Trench-made ballpark pennant:

Phillies (why oh why???)
Both Senators
Twins
Colt 45s

(These seem to have started around 1956-57 so can rule out Browns, Phila A’s, Boston Braves)

Mets have one - it sure looks like Trench - but the graphic has a different look and it wasn’t made with tassels.

Despite its unfinished nature, I'd go after it pretty hard if one came available in condition similar to yours. They rarely do, however. If you look at the one on ebay, there's ink hand writing towards the tip (which kills it for me). Was going to plunk down a snipe, but then saw the ink when I blew up the photo.

So the hunt goes on!

thetahat 10-17-2021 11:15 AM

Come to think of it, Trench really stayed away from white felt in general. Cloth, yes. But aside from Phillies and that Reds pennant … any others on white felt?

Maybe the "ink" is curly dog hair? If I wanted it, I'd put a new spine on it and trim that lower left corner.

Picked up a nice little batch of baseball pennants locally this week. The seller told me he got the Dodgers pennant at Ebbets. I can't find another one like this in google images. Looking for the photo that goes in the Twins pennant. I think it might be an ASCO photo.
