Hall of Famer who played centerfield between Ruth and Meusel for some great Yankees teams. Mentor to Joe DiMaggio and whose popularity among players and fans rivaled that of Gehrig

1954 Topps #185: Chuck Stobbs

2 Attachment(s)
Charles K. Chuck Stobbs. Pitcher for the Washington Senators in 1953-1958 and 1959-1960. 107 wins and 19 saves in 15 MLB seasons. He was one of MLB's first bonus babies. Debuted at 18 years old for the Boston Red Sox in 1947. Best remembered as the pitcher who gave up a home run that Mickey Mantle hit an estimated 565 feet and entirely out of Griffith Stadium in 1953. His best season may have been 1956 for the Washington Senators as he posted a 15-15 record with an ERA of 3.60 in 240 innings pitched. He finished his career with the Minnesota Twins in 1961.

Stobbs turned down a signing bonus because the rules at the time would have required him to spend two years in the majors before he was ready to pitch at that level. In 1947 Stobbs, his father who was his high school coach, and his younger brother who was the teams mascot, all got thrown out of the same high school game for different reasons

Ducky was the Cardinals first bonus baby and sat for two years on their bench doing little with no experience. Was thrown out of a game before ever appearing in one when he threw a towel at Augie Donatelli at the direction of Eddie Stanky. It was his only career ejection. Was on deck when Musial got hit 3000. Played behind Groat in Pittsburgh until Groat went to St Louis in 1963. Returned to St Louis in 1968 when they won the NL pennant

Al...I'll be contributing again here soon...was in the hospital! A week and a half ago I had by appendix burst...crazy but true. For those out there...if your feeling lower abdomen pain get it checked out, do not ignore it...I should have listened to my wife...I was lucky...but still recovering. Back soon...
