I did not plan ($$) for all the great Giants and 49ers pennants that would become available this summer. But I'm making it work.
I'm down to about three pennants on my 49ers wantlist, for what I believe is a complete run from 1946-1989. I happen to know where two of those pennants reside (you know who you are), but can certainly wait for copies to become available. Here are two more very rare ones that came in this group. |

First of all...thanks to Greg for trading this to Marc and to Marc for then trading it to me. Been after this one for awhile. I've seen the A's, Padres, Astros and many Phillies with the orbiting ball(s)...did they do these for other teams?

And now this guy...as they says about Cher, "she's had some work done." And as the Grateful Dead say, "what a long strange trip it's been."
As part of the above trade with Marc, I traded him my better example (with tassels intact) of this pennant. The one one I got from Marc was pretty dirty. Marc cautioned me about trying to clean it, but I'm an idiot. I first just put it in soapy water. It maybe cleansed up a little. Unable to leave well enough alone, I broke out the OxyClean. I figured "just a little Oxy; just a little soak." Within 30 seconds, the black just started dissolving off of it. The water looked like when you drop a paintbrush full of black acrylic paint into a glass of water. I wish I had a picture, but I was in panic mode. I drained the water and started quickly dousing it with clear water. Amazingly, the black stains washed off...and the body was significantly whiter. It didn't look too bad. I put it on a towel to dry overnight. This morning I checked it and all the black had turned to gray. All the black you now see? Sharpie! I know, I know...major pennant foul. But I'm happy with it and happy with the trade I made with Marc. Have I learned my lesson? Perhaps. |
Vintage Clothing

Thought I would share this listing, since it has now ended. Sold for $1,225. It’s not mine, nor did I win or even bid on it, but it’s the first time I’ve seen a Chipenco or Collegiate Ames design on a clothing item from that period, as opposed to felt. It’s actually very similar, but has even greater detail, than the Cornell bear design on felt products from that period, so I’m not even certain it’s Chipenco/Colleagiate. In researching I do see there was a “Sportswear by Collegiate, Ames” product line. Strong price, but the bidders appear to be clothing collectors, not Cornelliana or even college memorabilia collectors. There were 57 people watching this auction. I guess the vintage clothing market is truly bursting at the seams!

Wow, that seems like a strong price for the sweater, but I do wish they made those for more schools.
Rob- I had the same thing happen with retroclean on he Oilers pennant below. The areas that are now white started as an off-white color. Something about that layer reacted immediately with the retroclean can came off, leaving the more stable white paint below. It still looks ok. I kind of wish I had left it alone, but the blue cloth was very dirty/browned before I cleaned it. |
^^^ Crazy. Not even a good size.
Edit: the sweatshirt. |

The layer that came off was almost like a top coat? Something akin to varnish? It was not just dirt.

Recent pickup, little dirty so I'll probably give it a quick cleaning to help brighten the colors. Will look nice along the other tiger pennants I have with the "stalking tiger" graphic.

Got this recently. These cloth ASCO/Button House player pennants always intrigued me. I’d love to know if a checklist exists. This is smaller (14”) than the slightly more common ones (20”).
What’s weird is the airbrushed cap. He had only played with the Cubs, 1965 through 1971 before his trade to Oakland. What other cap could he be wearing? I can only think of a trademark/copyright issue with the team… the “Cub Power” cloth pennants seem to date to approx. 1969. |

IMPKO / US Patent No. 2,888,900
1 Attachment(s)
I found this interesting patent application filed by Ted Scarlett, of Imprint Art Co., a.k.a., IMPKO, concerning an invention to expedite the manufacture of pennants in 1959--a half century after Repco's John Clark Udall filed his first patent for the screen printing method:
See: https://ppubs.uspto.gov/dirsearch-pu...oadPdf/2888900 IMPKO wasn't known for making the highest quality pennants, but this idea concerning the manufacture of spines ("hems") and tassels ("ties") was interesting inasmuch as it saved time, labor, and provides further insight on how some pennants were made, like this one below, at the mid-century mark. By the way ... how'd you like to visit Intercourse, PA?? |
1 Attachment(s)
Been to Intercourse as a kid. My parents were into road trips and when it wasn't Rapid City, SD to see Mount Rushmore (and every tourist trap along the way) or Yellowstone...Pennsylvania was a popular destination. Don't remember much about Intercourse other than being old enough to realize it was a weird name for a town...as I was typically buried in comic books and football cards in the backseat, which my mother plied me with like morphine to keep me from complaining on the road.
This is one of Impko's more popular creations...The Alien Brownie. You can still find these in the packaging. Kyle...Did you find the blog article out there. If you google the name it comes right up. Here's an excerpt. "IMPKO: SOME CHEEZY POP HISTORY by Art Chantry"" Not much is factually know about IMPKO, they began as a souvenir picture postcard company sometime just before the turn of the 20th century. Soon, they started to market 'pennants' - those little miniature flags that you get as souvenirs with tourist locations silk screened on them. That quickly switched over to cheezy 'sports' pennants. Basically any novelty item silk screened on paper was also produced by them: bumper stickers, signs, novelty 'plaks'. Water transfer decals (produced with a silkscreen process) were soon to follow. It was a small step to simply make the same images inside little square decals and sell them alongside the other souvenir paraphernalia. IMPKO itself had gone out of business in the 1970's (or thereabouts. nobody is sure). " |

Cool info, Domer. It sometimes amazes me to discover what is "patented." This Giants pin has a patent number on the back for its very janky clasp mechanism.

I picked this up recently -- it's the most delicate piece of fabric I've ever seen. I asked an Indianapolis historian when it's from, and he thinks its the 1914 Federal League team.

Quote:
This one (with identical Player graphic) has always been attributed to the 1930s-40s.... https://insidetheparkcollectibles.co...-LOT14004.aspx So either the maker kept this graphic on file for a few decades, or the Mini Pennant is significantly more recent than the historian estimated. I would tend to believe it's the latter, but eager to hear what others think. |

Stretching the definition of pennant a bit and not sure what I'll ever do with it, but this was too cool to pass up. I was told it hung in Briggs Stadium in 1952, where the Texans played twice that year. The search for a picture begins...

Besides all of that...what are the odds that anyone would produce a pennant for Ken Holtzman? |
No it’s legit, cloth, just smaller than typical. It has the MLBPA trademark and the copyright symbol under Cub Power. I’m guessing they had pennants for at least the top Cubs players, and Holtzman was a 17 game winner in 1969.

Help on a couple of new to me items
2 Attachment(s)
I picked up on a few pennants and am wondering if anybody can help identify the year of these two pennants.
The first is a Cardinals. Found similar but not the same. Believe it is a 1960"s era. The second is a hockey pennant. Toronto Maple Leafs. Believe it is of 1960"s era also. Anybody know about hockey pennants? |
Quote:
That Cardinals could be anywhere from 1960-75. I’d guess late 60s. Can’t tell for sure but it looks like the stiffer felt which would make towards the later end. The Maple Leafs is ??? … I think this was made by a Canadian company … this kinda resembles others that were also made without a spine from the 1967-68 era - but not exact. It could be earlier. They will both look nice on your wall! |

There is a hockey series made right around the time of expansion, they all have the same painted spine. They are also cloth. I have noticed many destination pennants of Canadian towns and cities that look like this.

Los Angeles / San Diego Chargers pennant
1 Attachment(s)
I have a couple different pennants that have both cities listed on the pennant. They are clearly from 1961 and I assume that there was overstock from LA that they did not want to trash so they put San Diego on it while keeping the LA in the shield. Times were tough for the early AFL and money was tight. This is only an assumption, not something I know for sure. Anyone out there have any info on these? Maybe they made them to keep both cities interested?
|
Those sound like reasonable guesses. Really nice pennant. Feel free to show us more!
|
I had no idea the San Diego Chargers spent their first year in LA.
|
Buyer beware....
This seller has an interesting perception of the word "vintage". All 5 are, of course reproductions and/or fantasy pennants with no proper disclosure... https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_dkr...ball%20pennant |
Quote:
So, I don't think "San Diego" was added after-the-fact to update the pennant. I suspect this may have been a bootleg pennant that was briefly sold at some civic gathering in San Diego welcoming the new team? Just a guess. It's a cool pennant and I was unaware of one like it. Are there more out there for AFL teams like this? Dallas Texans? New York Titans? |
Los Angeles / San Diego Chargers pennant
1 Attachment(s)
It's very possible that this was for a civic event to welcome the team, hadn't thought of that before. They did have such a function at the El Cortez Hotel before the 1961 season. They had this team photo on the wall of the banquet room. It shows the 1960 LA Chargers but is labeled San Diego Chargers.

That is one demonic looking horse! :p

Did the Christy Mathewson pennant have a label or maker's mark on it? I wonder if Repco might have made it as that letter font looks similar to others by them from that era. |
Great pennant Mark and more great episodes. Well done. Hope to see you at the National.
|
Thank you, Kyle and Jason... much appreciated!
Kyle: I don't recall if the Matty Pennant has a Tag sewn to the reverse. I want to say no, but am not positive. I really should have made note before framing it. :o Jason: No Natty for me this year. Would love to go, but it's just not in the cards. Hope you have a great show, and I hope to see you in Chicago next year for sure. |

Stumbled Upon Two 1930's Original Six Hockey Pennants
2 Attachment(s)
I am always amazed by the stunning pennnants that I come across on this board and the most knowledgeable contributors who provide such valued opinions. I spoke to Mark about these two 1930's pennants and he graciously provided his opinion on them. He mentioned that I should share the photos with the board members, so here they are.
In the limited research that I was able to do, they seem to both be unique and rare pennants from the Montreal Canadiens and Toronro Maple Leafs. Believe it or not, living here in Montreal, I was not going to purchase the Maple Leafs pennant because of the bad blood between the Canadiens and the Leaf hockey teams, but there was too much history and beauty in that pennant that I also decided that they belonged together...boy that was hard to say..LOL Dimensions of the pennants are as follow: Canadiens 16 1/2 x 7 1/2 Leafs 17 x 7 1/2 Valued opinions are very much appreciated. Thank you Mark. |

I got to say, i felt very uncomfortable and disloyal opening up that package in my home and pulling out a Maple Leafs item...went straight to the corner in shame...LoL ...but couldn't turn my back on this one of a kind piece. |

As a kid, the magic was seeing all the different uniforms on the field at once. And what a thrill to count how many of "your" team's uniforms were out there. There was no shortage of Reds' Uniforms gracing the field during the 1970s! Hopefully someone in MLB will have the good sense to switch it back. |
