It was said Stu had 3 speeds...slow, slower and reverse. Once relieved in 1967 for Steve Barber and the Orioles in the 9th inning with a no hitter going. But Barber had walked 10, hit 2 and had thrown a wild pitch that allowed a tying run to score. With Miller in relief another run scored on a Belanger error and the Orioles and Barber and Miller lost a game in which they allowed no hits

I remember picking up this Podres card in the dollar "50's $1 bin" at a local card show knowing it would be filler, and something on my list at the time I needed. I shouldn't have marked it off the list, as of course I forgot until I went to scan for this! So...will upgrade now...lol...the scan looks better than in hand! haha

At age 19 jumped from a crashing B 52 into the English channel. Another American hero. At 6:2 and 180 the nick name Skinny would have seemed appropriate, except he got it during a chubby childhood

In his first MLB appearance in 1953 he faced 7 batters and gave up 6 runs on 4 hits, one walk, one hit batter and one wild pitch in 1/3 inning. He did not appear in another MLB game until 1957. But he was on the Phillies roster for all of 1954 because the baby bonus rule then in effect required any rookie signed with a bonus of more than $ 4000 stay on the MLB roster for 2 full years or be released. Qualters made no appearance in 1954 but was on the Phils roster all year

On July 5 ,1954 Bill had hit 3 homeruns in the game and came to bat in the 8th with the basis loaded. He flied out to the center field fence, with one more run scoring, giving him 8 on the game. A grand slam would have given him 11 tying the AL record. ....Digression...The NL record is 12 held by two Cardinals, Jim Bottemly and Mark Whiten. Whiten did it against the Reds on 9-7-93. I watched it happen. Hopefull Bob did too :)

1954 was his only MLB season. He played short stop for the Pirates while Dick Groat served in the military. Retired to San Antonio. Because Gair was such an unusual name he likely wanted to be called Roosevelt instead
