Many aren't afforded the luxury of being able to collect anything at all, and that is the way I look at it. Of course everyone wants 7's-8's and up, wouldn't that be sweet, but the reality is that is a tall order that very few can afford. My collection is a mixed bagged of grades/condition and I'm OK with that as I can say they're mine. Plus I remember the fun I had chasing them and actually winning them. :) My Al Sima for today. |

1952 Topps

My card for today. Sima. Love seeing everyone's cards. We are a lucky group to have the cards that we do from this coveted set. I saw a lower grade 1952 Topps set in the current Goldin Auction...will be interesting to see how that does.

It's currently at only $33K with 9 days to go so it will definitely be interesting to see where it ends up. https://goldinauctions.com/LotDetail...entoryid=87786 I just looked at the pictures of the set, and some of the grades make no sense to me. Take a look at the Slaughter in the last set of pictures. It's an 8, but it's missing the top, left corner and has other corner wear and surface wear. What was the grader thinking? |

The H&S super set lists a variant for Woodling, a bottom left front border break. Lemke discussed it in a SCD article several years back, but he did not include it as a variation in the Standard Catalog because he had narrowed his definition of a variation to cards intentionally changed by the manufacturer.
Although he had previously included some border break variations in the Catalog, such as the 73 Bahnsen and Bell, he came to recognize that the 73 set and other Topps sets had numerous border break recurring print defects. I assume he left those previously listed as variations in the Catalog because they had already achieved hobby recognition, but he quit adding them The 3d version, the red blob on the back, which is scarce but recurring, I owe to John Rafferty who posted one in the never ending variations thread https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds |

If every little anomaly were included in master sets, then most master sets would be absolutely massive, or more massive than they currently are now. My Gene Woodling for today. |

Del Rice is card #100. It looks like it wasn't until the early 60s sets when Topps started mainly putting stars on cards 100, 200, etc.

Here is my Kennedy when it used to be in a SGC 6 holder. I cracked it out in order to send it (along with several others) to PSA, but I didn't get the group over there before the shutdown.

It was purchased as a single card most likely from GM cards or another eBay seller and I don't believe there was any other info provided with it? I believe I have one or 2 others that also display collection descriptions similar to it? My Cliff Mapes for today. |

My Cliff for today. That GA 1952 Topps set ended up close to 70k last night with the Mantle being Authentic / Altered...not too shabby.

My Mapes. I saw what the set in Goldin went for as well. Not sure why the Mantle had the grade it did although it would have been a 1 if it got a number. Robinson seemed overgraded at a 3 with the amount of surface wear. Price actually seems somewhat reasonable based on recent sales of individual cards.

Also, as I have seen since 2016, complete sets never seem to bring the money people expect. Of course I am sure a PSA 8 set and higher would bring some crazy money but for the most part, based on what I have seen, selling the cards individually usually brings more money it seems? Of course, I suppose, that is how it is viewed as selling individually means a lot of work and such so maybe selling a complete set, especially if viewed as time is money and accounting for all the fees, etc, comes into play? I'll let others, however, answer that one who have more experience doing/trying both. :) |
I remember when I was collecting my Topps sets that if I added up the prices in the Beckett price guide in the Hi column for all the listed stars, it was usually close to the listed price for the set. If the set had high priced high numbers, then the price of the stars would be a little below the set price, but it did always seem like buying the full set would be cheaper than buying the cards in the set individually. The problem was finding a full set and having the money to spend for it all at once so none of my sets were bought complete.
