I'm slowly working on a second set 1955 Parkhurst Wrestling. With a little extra coin I had in my pocket picked up this Bronko Nagurski $33.65 delivered after Canada shipping and US taxes. About as cheap as you're gonna find one?

Adam,
in my opinion the pair definitely looks like Tunney on the right and and Dempsey on the left. a cool piece, and one I’ve not seen before. |

Thank you to Adam for these. I generally don't collect the N cards because the boxing N cards are either
1) Not realistically possible to complete a set because they are so scarce or 2) The set has baseball players in it which means completing the set costs $$$$$$ and I'm a cheapass. I've gotten better at accepting I just won't complete some sets and enjoy having an incomplete set. I may pick up the non-baseball's, but I'm not willing to pay the price for Anson/Kelly etc. Thanks to Adam, I just got the boxing subset in one go without having to decide to chase them all down. Thanks Adam. The Mitchell is much nicer than I thought it was looking at the pictures, the colors really pop on the lithographic cards when they aren't toned as most of them are, even in higher grades. Jem Smith is my favorite of the N162's. Of course, I believe I still need to get the variations. Mitchell and Dempsey have the lithographer line at back bottom, Sullivan and Smith do not (Kilrain has paper loss obscuring his). I don't know which back type is tougher and am not knowledgeable about this issue. I believe all 50 cards come both ways, but this may be wrong. |
My pleasure. That subset took a rather convoluted route to get to you. Some jackass won the set at auction from me, reneged, got thrown off eBay, re-registered the next week, won it again AND RENEGED AGAIN! Rather than relist and let that guy get another crack at it, I sold it privately.

I've probably handled over 100 different postcards over the years from that fight...but I think that might be the coolest one. Looks like a montage or collage against the background of a crowd shot. Very neat composition. |

I just picked up these two pinbacks of Ali. I thought they were kind of unusual.
On June 29th, 1979, world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali faced Governor Brendan Byrne and Jersey City Mayor Thomas Smith in exhibition bouts at the Jersey City armory. The supposed purpose of the event was to raise money for the Medical Center. |

Thanks to a board member for a purchase and trade here.
The T220 Tolstoi Dempsey is the big get for me - this completes my T220 Tolstoi set and my T220 White Border Master set with all 3 backs and all image variations. It puts me at 189/190 cards in the T220 full master set - only the Jas. J. Corbett Silver Border to go (anyone want to cash out and sell one yet?). I got my first Tolstoi close to 20 years ago when I was a kid The C52's put me at 89/109 in my set, down to 20 cards left. The Cutler measures considerably short but it looks the nicest. The Wolgast puts me at 42 of the 50 Honest Long Cut Green backs, and at 146 cards deep into the master set. I doubt I will ever complete this master run, but it's a been a blast working on it. The T227 Coulon is the purple back variation. Still need Honest Long Cut Purples of Johnson, Klaus, and Attell. Pickup days are becoming rarer as I'm pretty deep into my c. 1910 boxing master runs now, which just makes them more fun. |

Got a book this week from the BST. Had never heard of it before.
One of my lanes of interest has been figuring what was known when about the T cards. I've found little to no checklists even from before the time I entered boxing card land in ~2003, so for $20 I thought this might be interesting material. Some of it is woefully inaccurate or just incomplete. The T218 series are nowhere even close to accurate (but then again I don't think any source has been close to correct besides Vrechek's article), and the writer did not know Tolstoi backs exist at all. It's interesting to see what cards just weren't known then. T224/T226/C52 note that their checklists are not complete and are reporting what has been seen, and labels 50 cards for T224-9. For T220 it says Coburn with and without a man to left exists in both white and silver, it reports the T220 Silver Jack Goodman fantasy while missing the Donovan (of course) and Jas. J. Corbett (when was this card first known? It's public knowledge predates the Donovan of 2006). Other parts are surprisingly on point. T219 has all 4 backs listed, by far the earliest reference to the Green backs (guess I didn't figure that out ;) and to Red Cross being physically smaller than the other 3 (guess I didn't figure that out either ;). Lots of good stuff about the British issues. Been a fun read for a few bucks with some insights into the historiography. Also got a 23 card set of VG-EX T220 Silver's, 5 of them turned out to be upgrades. |
Seconds Out is a go-to guide for the UK issues. I've found it very useful in ID'ing types for my collection. Unlike the WTI, it has pictures. When I saw the American section it inspired me to start doing my own books--i couldn't make it worse...
As for new stuff, these finally landed from So. America, so say hello to my little friends: 1956 Crack Gigantes de Figuritas Sport Marciano https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...0Marciano.jpeg 1952 Figuritas Lali Archie Moore https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...i%20Moore.jpeg Both rare as hell. I hadn't seen the Marciano offered for sale in years and the Moore was one I'd never seen before. |

I've never had a copy of the WTI or the ACC. I should hunt some copies down to see what they say on T218-T229. |

I don't know much about dating postcards so I don't know when this is from beyond that it's not very recent. I like to get cards I find aesthetically nice of guys in the T218/T220 issue, so for less than $20 on eBay today I figure it was low risk and I'll enjoy it for that price regardless of when its from.
Jeffries was probably the greatest of the early heavyweight champions but has little modern interest relative to the popularity he had in his own time. Means there's a lot of stuff of him and most of it is cheap, which is lovely for me. |
Playle ID's that as a 1930-1950 PC back type.

Picked up a few more Mayo's. I was the underbidder on a lot of the others, happy to cross 1 of the Sullivan's off my wantlist. The Creeden and Goss don't measure right, I am confident the Creeden is trimmed. Neither belonged in a numbered slab, but it's rare I acquire an SGC card that is actually graded correctly. Why they insist (or insisted) on slapping 1890 on the label will always be a mystery to me.

Pal Moore of Pennsylvania is most renowned for being mistaken for Pal Moore of Memphis. Willie Beecher is most renowned for appearing in this set of cards. I really love the artwork for this set and the interesting outdoor backgrounds on the type 1 images. I really wish there had been a larger T9 type set incorporating these images in a larger format.

Picked this upgrade up too. Most of my set is what I would call a 4, VG-EX but PSA/SGC rank a 5-6. I'm a lot harsher on the corners and edges of the silvers than they are, I guess. It's pretty hard to find a strong image with no creases, and minimal wear, so I overpaid a bit. This one is better than my old Jackson, even if I don't think it's a 5. It will be liberated soon.

Unfortunately I was in Europe and the only bid that held up for me was Choynski. |

Here's some of them one of the winners was kind enough to flip my away and reunite most of the sheet. Arrived today, very fun to see still. I paid closer to what Dempsey was bid up to on eBay when the listing got yanked than I did the price through Weiss. I snoozed on that completely
|
Does it look like these would make up a large print sheet if put together? It seems like an odd way to print a set. Maybe they were preproduction samples?

Quote:
The Jordan, Beecher and presence of Donovan and Corbett indicate it’s surely a pre-production piece for Brett, not quite the final rendition. |

1951 Topps Ringside Boxing with Puzzle Back? Never heard of these, apparently hand cut from an advertisement piece similar to this wax box image I found on the internet. With Fathers Day eBay gift card in hand asking price was $99 OBO I offered $75 and picked up for $85 plus $6 shipping and $6.37 sales tax. Others are out there but still a pretty unique card.

Nice pickup. I haven't seen those before either. I wonder if anyone knows what the item is that this was cut from? Obviously it looks like part of the box top pictured. Maybe it's from a store display.

It is cut from one of the ad panels for the set. Adam has one with different cards. He has posted it before.https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=301657 Post #33

I’m not sure why they’d call a cut from a salesman sample a puzzle back. SGC doesn’t know what it is but authenticates it. Really awesome piece and a good price, I think. I’d have hit the BIN too if I saw it.
|
None of the TPGs actually knew what they were, so they made it up. Not a unique thing for them. PSA's Latin American sets are a blizzard of gibberish and made-up names.
And as long as we're at it and I can trot this out again: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...Sample%201.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...Sample%202.jpg That's my version of a Marciano RC... |

Cards 109 and 110 in my T225-1 set. The lack of Jack Johnson makes this one a very affordable set, with a strong checklist of great boxers nobody cares about, as opposed to the T225-2's that have a horrific checklist of terrible boxers nobody cares about.

Found the Canelo's at a show today in a nickel box, so I grabbed all 3. Checking eBay sold items they are $45-$100 cards apparently. Not sure if I'll keep one or not, that's too much value for a base modern card in my eyes.
The T218 Hoppe is a miscut 30 back showing he is below William Heins, a bowler. This is a significant miscut find to identifying series 3 distribution and clarifying some of the comments in the ledger pages that survive - evidently the Billiards Players were not their own series as a couple of the pages imply was possible. I was surprised how much this one ended up going for, thought I'd snag it for little. If someone else is collecting these miscuts please show them for sheet reconstruction research :) Another "D" error Trubenbach, since it was a cheapie. And cards 111-120 in my T225-1 master set run. |
The Canelo cards have really gone up. I just sent off one of the certified signed RCs for slabbing; that card can go for $2K.
https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ize/Canelo.jpg There are a # of modern cards like that lately. I also sent this one for grading, because it can go well into four figures slabbed: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...0Tyson%201.jpg Hopefully, they will be back before a card show I am setting up at in August. https://www.burbankcardshow.com/ Come visit; there will be lots of esoteric boxing cards and memorabilia at my table. Oh, and a modest p/u: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...van%20CDV.jpeg |
Auto's and tough inserts make sense as being valuable, though I don't know if the explosion will hold. Base commons, this seems excessive. I thought it was like $5-$10 and that's why I didn't have a copy yet.
I've never been to the Burbank show, but this one had a dealer I don't know with actual boxing for the first time I've ever seen. Bunch of Jack Johnsons, a set of Cohen's & Weenen's, Joe Louis stuff, a full display case. All CSG slabbed, not really what I look for but I can probably count on my fingers the boxing cards I've encountered in hand and are not in my collection. Cool to see some boxing amidst the post-war vintage and modern baseball/football/basketball. Came away with tons of junk wax for fun opening, a couple Heritage hobby boxes at $40 a pop, some post-war vintage including a Hornung rookie, an Obak, 2 Zeenuts, and a big box of 60's baseball I need to sort through one evening. Still hoping to find a box of Mecca cards one day.... Nothing as cool as a Sullivan CDV! |

I hit the $500 BIN on these, not sure if I overpaid a little or not. I believe Gotch carries a bit of a premium but I don't follow wrestling. All are Pet backs, without the purple stamp. Fitzsimmons I already had, but with a Kopec back. Up to 16 different fronts, 17 total after about a year of trying to build this set. I expect progress to continue at a much slower pace.

Anyone score off the Heritage sale this weekend?

Quote:
No, but I noticed the Kopec T229 Jack Johnson SGC 3 went for 12K. Don't know how that compares to past sales, but it's one I'm relatively confident I've never owned and sold off in the past, so I don't have to feel bad for seeing it go that high. :D |
Hmm, didn't realize Troy was selling off his Ali collection.

Quote:
Results all over the place. Strong prices on some of the posters. |
I was wondering what that Johnson went for. Nice looking 3, that card is probably permanently out of my price range now.
|
No worries, Greg, it's not like you will find one to buy anyway. :D
I kid you, my friend. In the last two months three N223 Kinney Hold To Light Sullivans have reached market, after a very long drought, so anything could pop up. |
Quote:
I've gotten to the point where most of the cards on my c. 1910 boxing want list are just exciting to even see appear, whether I get them or not. Sometimes it's just fun to see things we didn't even know existed crop up, or cards that haven't been seen for years somehow come up in batches. This is what has been so fun with boxing, it's not usually a contest of how big my wallet is as it is an effort of research, digging and patience. I have no idea how many T224/T229 cards there really are out there, but I'm starting to think it's not more than a couple dozen of each maybe. |

Oh I wish I was in Dixie. Thank you to a board member and pal for these, 8 Dixie Queen's to help my little set along. I'm 21 deep now. New cards make me smile fierce as a 40 pounder. Hooray! Hooray!
Look away though, the condition is not pretty. I think the Welsh might be my first SGC boxing card that I think is under graded, some toning on the back on the small handwriting on the top left. I'll find out if there's hidden damage when I bust the slab. Dixie Queens are pretty tough, looking for a particular one can be really tough. I imagine the survival rate of these was lower than most sets, with the very thin stock and the recycled images at a lower quality than their parent set. I'm 1 card away from a total Master T220 set, so these are a perfect complement as I'm about out of T220 to look for. |
Nice haul. Very tough set.

Not as cool as the Dixie's, but I got another T218 miscut for my collection. Cost a little too much, but it shows the card adjacent is another Johnson Green. This doesn't help much, as Johnson being on his own sheet would be printed this way, but so too if he was substituted over other cards in a sheet similar to the T220 Silver array. I suspect Johnson was printed on a sheet all on his own, for at least series 1 production. He is clearly a super print and his back pattern strongly suggests he did not replace HJ Handy as has often been said.

Nothing as cool as a Marciano card, but Marvin Hart was a Heavyweight Champion too (sort of). Cards 121, 122 and 123 in my set, 2 away from the 50% marker. Getting close to the time to put more serious effort into it soon.
The lack of a Johnson makes this set pretty cheap, but the roster is star-studded. Jack Sullivan was one of many claimants to the American middleweight title and fought several prominent heavyweights that were much larger. Papke held the world title for a time. Hart was proclaimed the world champion after Jeffries retired. Most of the guys in the set are in this tier, stars in their day, obscure and cheap now. |

I received my Joe Louis United Tobacco back from PSA. Not a high grade but I'm ok with that. I sent in a Sonny Liston Swedish Rekord RC last week, so I'll probably have that back in about 3 months or so. I don't really collect boxing, but I have acquired a few over the years. Maybe it's because I don't engage much with boxing cards, but I've always thought they are pretty affordable.

Nice card, but I see PSA still getting the date wrong on that issue.
