Chad, as I'm sure you are well aware, there are definitely some nice 1s out there because the pinhole is sometimes the only reason for the grade of an otherwise nice looking card such as your McBride.

Yep, I happen to be a big fan of those cards ;) I've acquired plenty of 'pinhole' Pr and Pr-Fr cards because of this in my quest to complete the set with eye appeal as the over-riding goal. As you know, they are so common on Turkey Reds and I suppose all cabinets in general. Luckily for me, pinholes have never really bothered me much on cabinets. Though it looks like someone put a nail through my McBride.

Beautiful! My taped up Mathewson looks on jealously ;) It's the one card I most want to upgrade.

Down to one ... Tenney (

Hi everyone ... sorry for hijacking, but I am down to my last card ... anyone have an 'extra' Tenney in a PSA 2-5 for sale? I don't care which version ... for now just interested in getting to 100 cards. Thanks!

Good luck picking up the Tenney. The NY and Boston variation was the last card I needed to complete my set of 104.

Harry Niles for today.

Coincidentally, the Tenney NY is now the last card that I need! 103 down, 1 to go.

Of the two offered, one is a PSA-4 from Deans at over $2000.00, ouch!

Yes, both overpriced, but Dean's especially so in a surprise to no one. That PSA 4 illustrates my problem with TPGs and how they grade T3s. There is no consistency. I've seen plenty of ugly Turkey Reds in 3 & 4 holders, with creases, paper loss, stains, you name it. IMHO, a card as unappealing as that being sold by Dean's should never be in a VG-EX holder. It's PR to G at absolute best, in my admittedly subjective opinion.

Niles…

Note: The Tenneys are tough, they were some of the last cards I got.

For those that are looking, there's a PSA 3 Tenney in the REA auction that just opened.

Bob Rhoades

Kawika 01-14-2022 09:37 AM

When I put together a Turkey Red set about fifteen years ago Rhoades and Bransfield were considered to be the toughies. I luckily picked up Rhoades early on as part of a lot of cards but Bransfield proved quite difficult.

I just collected the set in the past few years. I had been told the Rhoades was tough, but I luckily picked up my Rhoades pretty early on in an auction that didn't seem to be very well known (I forget the name now and I don't think it's around any more). I don't remember the Bransfield being a problem. The Tenney variation with NY and Boston was definitely a tough one, and it was the last card I got to complete my set.

Schmidt is known for giving a cocky young fellow Tiger named Ty Cobb a well deserved beat-down in early 1907, leaving him with a broken nose and black eyes.

Well, to answer my own question (thank you Wikipedia!):

Schulte acquired his nickname, "Wildfire", after seeing a play called "Wildfire" in Mississippi. He then named one of his race horses "Wildfire" and was eventually known by that name, as well.

In addition, i learned Schulte was one of only four players to ever make the 20-20-20-20 club, which i never knew existed. 20+ doubles, triples, homers and stolen bases in one year.

Cards always mean a lot more when you know something.

I remember hearing that there were 4 players who had done that in 2007 after both Jimmy Rollins and Curtis Granderson did it. Willie Mays (1957) also did it. I don't remember Schulte being the fourth, but he did it in 1911.
