Not rare or expensive (this copy was $29.16 net), but one of my favorite old boxing cards, as it features the Burns-Johnson fight in 1906. Burns remains one of my favorite old timers and, I think, an underrated boxer. He weighed in at 168 pounds for his fight against Johnson. Burns was only 5'7, but defended his title successfully 11 times in less than 3 years, one of the most active champions of all time. Johnson was about 6'1, weighed in at 192 for this fight (and was usually heavier during his title reign). Johnson won of course, taking the crown after the police stopped the fight in the 14th round, claiming a points victory by referee decision. Burns "was beaten, but he was game" as Johnson said. Burns was the first to defend his title around the world.
Need 6 cards to complete the black back E79 set now, and 12 of the tough red back cards. |

I was about 5 seconds too late on the 3 BIN's, that seller could have got far more if he knew what he had. He priced them the same as his Mecca and Hassan cards |
T218 Tolstoi
Thanks, G, like my paternal grandmother told me, "no good deed goes unpunished." When you explained to me that T218 Tolstoi had 50 cards, and provided a checklist, I went all-in, thinking I'm going to complete it. I promise not to hoard, and trade all my dupes..Rob 18/50

Greg, yes, I got that one yesterday, here's a link to an old thread from 2003 that I started, naively talking about T218 Tolstoi. It does seem that some of the track guys are easier to find, maybe just a coincidence. Hopefully, higher prices will bring out more cards to the market and we can all complete our sets. Rob

I think each series was probably printed on more than 1 sheet layout, and that thus it's possible there are 2 levels of scarcity in the Tolstoi's. Jeffries, Gans and Langford seem 'common' among the boxers. For the record and anyone else keeping track, here's what I have: Leach Cross, W.C. Fielding, John Flanagan, Joe Gans, George Gardiner, Gissing, Harry Haywood, James Jeffries, Harry Jensen, Jack Johnson, W.J. Kramer, Smyth Northridge, Tommy O'Keefe, George Obermeyer, William Papke, Frank Riley, J.A. Ruddy, Harry Sedley Jr., Melvin Sheppard, C.C. Steinert |

Hello all,
I don’t really post much but I’ve been selling some cards and meeting so many great people that I figured I should at least pop on, say thanks, and post some cards. I’m a low grade pre-WWI boxing set builder. I’m also a Jack Johnson and Joe Jeannette “active career” collector. I started collecting Johnson cards about nine or so years ago. They were relatively cheap then and I managed to pick up the common ones and many of the harder ones. Things stalled about a year ago as prices went up. I resorted to making desperate posts in the BST looking for a low grade e77, Susini, etc. ... Then one evening (PST), Scooter729 posts a horrible condition e77 Johnson on eBay. Scott had once sold me one of my favorite cards in my collection, a N162 Sullivan. So, I proceed to absolutely blow up his inbox. He’s was really kind about it all. The rest is history. Thanks Scott! The e77 is pretty rare but not one of my favorites. Why does it look like Jack is in the process of balding?? The Johnson fits in well with a stack of terrible condition e77s that I just bought from Rhy. As a low-grade set builder, it amazing to find nine cards from the e77s in a week! https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5h_EOszV-...AEC4F72B7.jpeg Finally, I made a trade with RC. Thanks so much! Even in bad shape it’s a gorgeous card. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LMWJPXoEb...21BEDD10B.jpeg So thanks everyone! Thanks for helping me get further in a Johnson collection than I ever thought that I would. Also, thanks for purchasing some cards so I can feed the habit! It’s very much appreciated! Be well! Nice Johnson's David! And thanks for some of the cards here.
Recent pickups the last couple weeks or so; sometimes the back is better than the front. Choynski is rough, but knocks me up to 47/50 on the Tolstoi's. |
Nice cache of cards. I added a few premiums from the British periodical Boxing, ranging from 1909-1914. All three show Fred Welsh; the last one includes Willie Ritchie.

Not sure how desirable or scarce this is, but I took a risk at a best offer and happy with the outcome. Just ordered Adam's book so I can educate myself better. Lifelong prewar baseball collector(35 years) but my passion is in contact sports so why not collect them. I have wrestled, practiced many different types of grappling and mixed martial arts in the Marines into my late 30's. I only played baseball to my sophomore year in high school :) Going to sell my bb cards and have fun on this side for awhile.

Well, welcome to Sherwood! Not only is it fun, it is waaaay cheaper than baseball card collecting. |

Some from the last week or two, sadly these 3 were imprisoned but quickly liberated. The Choysnki silver doesn't belong in a SGC 3 holder anyways, as the card is significantly short and probably trimmed.
Starting to get into the British issues more as well (thank you davidl, for making me jump across the pond for my boxing fix now!). The Silvers keep stacking up. |
Wait till you catch the bug for the rest of the world's cards. You'll find yourself waiting breathlessly for deliveries from places like Venezuela, Singapore and Ukraine, and chasing obscure cards of Argentinean club fighters that even the boxer's mom doesn't care about.

I’m not sure about those Australian cards as I don’t think I’ve ever seen them except from the seller you got yours from. Cool though. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RG0wZ1c08...s/s1600/BF.jpg ... and keeping with the spirit of this thread, here’s some nice additions to my Jeannette collection! |
The Oz cards are 1922 Davies & Herbert Newcastle Boxers. Not an easy issue to find but one seller has been offering a brick of them in various permutations for quite some time on eBay. The only big name is Les Darcy.

More "the back is better than the fronts". Thanks davidl for the C52 and Gans. 2 more Tolstoi's, a miscut Goldman showing another Goldman on top, and some dupes for the Master sets.

I've been working on a T225 Series 101 set. I've always liked the artwork and at 25 cards, ungraded, it won't be a bank or space breaker. Anyhow I am at 15/25 now and oddly enough 7 different backs.

Yet another silver, I got to have about 30% of the total set POP report sitting in a shoebox cracked out now. Mitchell is one I needed for the T220 master set, now 9 cards short of completion. Coburn is a tough variation with a blue man at left instead of the nearly missing black silhouette. a Tolstoi dupe in rough terrible condition I couldn't pass up for the price, and my first T227 boxer. Been picking up more of this set lately, gorgeous artwork.

A little Al Kaufman to go with my big Al Kaufman. Is it common for T225's to not have factory numbers?

I just picked this one up. I was a little apprehensive that it could have been a reprint, but it wasn't being sold as autographed, it seems to match other examples, and you can tell seeing it in-person that it's on the photo, not part of the print. He died in 1924, so his signatures are beyond scarce.
