Default '29 Kashin (R316) Theatre backed cards

Posted By: Glen V

The SCD has a listing for Oriental Theatre, which is a 1929 Kashin card w/ an ad back. Recently I picked up a Kashin w/ a Rialto Theatre back. I was wondering if there are more player with either backs, or any other Theatres that used Kashin cards to advertise. Has anyone seen ad back Kashins, or have any more info to add to this topic?

That's very cool. I think I've seen an ad back Ruth Kashin in Steve Verkman's store about a year ago, but don't remember what the back was advertising.

Neat card. I love the back stamps and ads on all different cards. I think it makes them much more interesting. I have a '29 Premium with a Theater back (Villa) but only this R316 with a stamp...

Hi Glen,

Neat card! Much, much nicer than the ones below from a recent pickup. I started to get interested in the theatre theme on finding those strip cards advertised Kings Theatre and offering similar "matinee" coupons. They are on what look like W573 and W575-1 strip cards, though - a couple of examples are below.

I did a bit of research on Kings Theatre to try to figure anything out about the release of these ad cards. Access to historical archive of St Louis newspapers would shed a lot more light on the subject, but it seems like a basic story about the theatre and its history does come together from generally available sources online.

The evolving story is suitable for another thread, but in short the Kings was: built in 1912, converted from vaudeville to cinema in 1923, closed in 1929, razed in 1935. The lot was sold to an auto dealer during the war - a used car lot still stands there. (818 N Kingshighway, St Louis, 63108).

Here are a couple of the cards from the group.

Mike, neat backs. It looks like these were cut down from something bigger, but the card portion is the right size. It would be cool to see the whole advertisement, if any exist. Still, nice find, especially with the Cobb.

Does anyone have a picture of a Ruth '29 Kashin (R316) Theatre backed card?
