Default SCD actively seeking Pre-War Card Columnist

Posted By: Chris Nerat

Hello everyone,

I posted this request last year and nothing really came of it, but SCD is still actively in search of a pre-war card freelancer.

If anyone knows of anybody who would be interested, please email me at chris.nerat@fwpubs.com.

please send a writing sample with the email.

Thanks much!
chris

I nominate Chris Morales. Since SCD recognizes his expertise at authenticating pre-war autographs, he probably knows as much about pre-war cards.

scd has their pulse on the collecting community.
who wants to break the news to them that the old stuff is call pre-war, not pre ward?
unless the are looking for a columnist to discuss Leave it to Beaver....pre-Ward Cleaver

Andy, Pre-Ward Clever would be William Bendix in Life of Riley. Now I'm really showing my age.

And before William Bendix, Jackie Gleason played Chester Riley (1949-50).

Here is a sample of my writing that I think will fit in with SCD's philosophy of journalism:

"In this weeks column, let us examine the 1911 T205 Gold Bordered set. Specifically the John Titus card. This card has it all. Beautiful colors, a great picture of a moderate player, and gold borders. How could anyone not like this card. The yellow background really sets off the facsimile signature and the team designation. This card belongs in any pre-war collection.

If you would like to see a great scan of this wonderful pre-war card, please head over to my auction site: www.scdsupportscrookedauctionpractices.com (also listed on page 12 of the current SCD across from the Coaches Corner auction). My auction includes three such examples of this rare and valuable card to be viewed and possibly won (if my shills are outbid). If you want to compare the facsimile autograph on the front of the T205 Titus and see how it differs from a real Titus autograph, make sure to check out my lot #33 with a real authentic autograph that comes with a certificate from Chris Morales and STAT. Both very reputable in the eyes of this wonderful magazine.

Make sure to check out next week's column on the undervalued and exceedingly rare T206 Leon Ames card. Don't forget to check out my auction next week as well for scans of at least 4 Ames cards and 2 Ames autographs!"

So, do I get the job?

Joshua

Since Chris Nerat was kind enough to come on the board: perhaps he read through much of that 700-post thread about STAT and Morales and would like to share with us if SCD has reconsidered its relationship with Coaches Corner.

I don't think it's fair to sort of pin the woes of SCD on Chris (hi Chris). I met Chris last year at the National and we had a great chat. Very nice gentleman and believe me, he understands the situation well. Chris is doing his job.
HOWEVER I DO HAVE A NOMINEE FOR THEIR FREELANCE WRITING POSITION. CAN ANYONE GUESS WHO IT MIGHT BE?

I don't blame one person per se for this menagerie, but who is to blame? Who is the head of this monster that allows this to continue despite the screaming voice of the frustrated consumer? Is there a name?

I remember during the Morales thread, one person e-mailed someone from SCD and that person promised to read the thread. What happened there? All I know is that the latest Coach's Corner auction is in full swing and there are some fanatastic deals to be had. It ends this weekend kiddies. The Comiskey signed Softball...under $350 so far!

If SCD wants the collecting public to stand behind them, ECOUTE'! Listen to the public and what it wants. It wants unbiased reporting (did you guys really s--tcan Ron Keurijkan because his articles on autograph fraud was annoying some of the advertisers?) and it wants honesty all around...a trusted voice of the hobby, isn't that your motto? Come to the Forum and tell us some things. Answer some difficult questions. Do some spring cleaning.

The week Coach's isn't in the periodical, you can JUST about make it into a paper airplane.

DJ

Pay no attention to the ramblings to the associated riff-raff to which you have been exposed so far on this board. I for one, am more than happy to volunteer my services for this prestigious position.

Frankly I've been looking for a platform to spread my message of world revolution, to warn the masses of the dangers of radio chip implants, radiated vegetables, fluoridation, alien mind implants in our government leadership, and of course, substantiate my claim with bonafide evidence that Leon is Elvis' love-child. I'm ready, willing, and quite able to represent SCD in its noble quest for ethics and the sharing of knowledge within the industry. I have an excellent knowledge of pre-war, truthfully a little weak on pre-ward, but I'm a quick learner!

Best

Paul

William Bendix did of course have a somewhat tenuous baseball connection, starring as George Herman Ruth in "The Babe Ruth Story"

Other than that, I can add nothing to this thread which hasn't already been penned in a manner for more intelligent than I could muster; however, I would also subscribe if wonka could provide a wonka-image each issue.

SCD already has a columnist on staff to fill this position, one who writes insightful stories already about all the bargains that are available in an auction in which he "authenticates" rare and unusual autographs. If he knows pre war(d) cards as well as he knows autographs I can only imagine the knowledge that will be gained by his readers.
I nominate Mr. Ted Taylor for this position. I am sure he would be willing to impart his knowledge and expertise to all readers. After all, look at how much of that he is doing already.

Of course "double T" could talk about the Pro Graded 9.5 T206 Ty Cobb Red card that sold for $4700 in their last auction that was in Coach's last auction.

I think RG (if it is in fact "Gizmo") should write a column. I may (no I won't) read the magazine again. A constant stream of capital letters combined with serious grammar issues would be more amusing than anything T.S writes about in "Infield Dirt". Fluff, fluff, fluff.

This is the funniest post I have read in 3 years! Why bash SCD for not having a pre-war expert when we accept the grading companies that do not have a pre-war expert???. Or even some auction houses, Heritage has never had anyone that knows what a pre-war card is.

I can't argue that point Al. The SGC holders are gorgeous and with the black frames, well it just really makes some issues look that much better. My problem is with the numbering. If they had just an Authentic Unaltered and an Authentic Altered, then heck, I would buy in to the grading big time. Dan.

I guess in my case, Dan, I take the good with the bad. I buy so many cards over the internet, and I'm just not comfortable with scans. I realize they don't get it right every time, but even if they get the percentage up into the 90s, which I believe they do, I like my chances better than with raw cards.

And I really do like the idea of common ground among collectors, with respect to condition. I might not always agree with the standards, but at least I know what they are.

Man, I totally hijacked this thread.

Neither Chris Nerat, nor T.S. O'Connell, nor any other member of the SCD editorial staff has an iota of input into the situation relative to Coach's Corner or any other advertiser, for that matter.

Decisions relative to continued advertising privileges rest in the hands of (in ascending order of rank) publisher Dean Listle, group publisher Jeff Pozorski and F+W Magazine Group president David Blansfield. You can address your concerns about advertising issues with them, but I assure you that unless you have a solid plan to replace the revenue that would be lost by banning CC, there is zero chance they will take such action.

Some of the same line-up who have piped up negatively on this thread are long-time SCD bashers, never missing a chance to bemoan the lack of quality vintage editorial matter, but when the paper's editors make a genuine effort to bolster that area, the effort is met with largely puerile sarcasm. (You like that word "puerile?" Olbermann used it on me once . . . I had to look it up.)

As for Ted Taylor "column" that appears frequently, that is totally unpaid press release material. Do you really think that if the "real" auction houses are accorded space for their pre- and post-auction press releases, that the editors can refuse management's demand for similar treatment of SCD biggest advertiser?

If you can't contribute anything meaningful to SCD, or to threads about SCD, other than tired re-hash of well-known grievances, maybe you should just find another whipping boy.

If Chris reads this board, he had to know that CC is a hot button issue here (even if it's been overplayed). So when he came on to ask for writers, I knew even before anyone responded that he was headed for the hot seat.

Obviously, CC is not a minor issue, it is a major one. There are many reasons why SCD has lost nearly its entire readership (okay, some people still read it), and the CC debacle is a prominent one.

I accept that the editors don't control advertising content and give Chris credit for asking for Pre-War writers. However, to many hobbyists CC will be the elephant in the room for the magazine as long as its the major sponsor. That's the way it is.

It doesn't matter who is at fault for allowing CC to continue to advertise in SCD. While Chris shouldn't take the brunt of criticism for it, he works for a company that is allowing an advertiser an avenue to introduce bad product into our hobby. Anyone who would take that job of writing prewar articles for the SCD is aiding and abetting a crime IMO.
