Default Are there any vintage deception error cards?

Posted By: ramram

Playing jokes on photographers/card companies has been around since the first cards were made but how many known VINTAGE error cards are there of this type? (similar to when Gary Pettis had his brother stand in for his Topps card, or when Lew Burdette posed as a lefty or when Billy Martin put his middle finger out).

While not a card, the famous vintage panoramic photo taken at the Addie Joss memorial game (which includes amongst other interests, Ty Cobb wearing a Cleveland uni) has such a "deception." One of the Cleveland players left his spot after the camera had taken his image, and ran around behind the camera to the other side of the picture and stood in place there when the camera swung around, thus appearing in the panorama 2 times.

One of the earliest baseball cards would have to be N172 Deacon White portrait with the caption McGreachery - Mgr Indianapolis. As the oldest player in the League in 1888 (year of photo), poor Deacon in a bare headed portrait sure looked more like a manager than player. There was no Manager by the name McGreachery, not in Indianapolis or anywhere else. One of several Goodwin & Company jokes.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Not a card, but I believe I remember seeing a 1930's International Japan Tour Photo where Moe Berg was giving some signal to authorities that the fix was on.
