I just inherited approx.1200 t206 cards and 157 colgan "tin tops". The cards are from about 1900-1910 and there are around 15 different cig.companies. I don't know where to start!

The number and type of cards seem significant enough that Robert Edwards Auctions would be willing to check them out and help you sell them if that is what your intent is. It doesn't get any better than Rob Lifson when come to knowledge and reputation in the hobby.

I'll give you some background on these things....They belonged to my wife's Great-grandfather...he passed and his wife threw them in the trash. My Father-in-law arrived the next day and upon hearing what happened drove to the dump and found all of them(still in the box)!! What he didn't find were the 2 signed Babe Ruth jerseys,or the 5 World Series programs..... He is now gone and my wife and I have just recieved them.

With Tin Tops, I can't help much there beyond this, if there is a Thorpe in the group, everyone here would love to see a scan of it. Jackson would be another player to look for along with all the players listed above exxcept for O'Hara and Demmit. Also look for Wagner.

The first question to ask yourself is "What do I want to do with these cards?"

If you are interested in selling them, I agree with Jay. Robert Edwards Auctions is above reproach. They will either travel to you, or have you securely send them the cards. They will take a cut (probably 20%) when they sell them, but they (or a couple of other major auction houses), will easily be able to get you the best price.

If you want to keep the cards, but are just curious about their value, use this board to find someone fairly local to give you some idea of their worth. Don't accept any offer from any of us to buy them. (Just kidding, sorta.)


If you want to get a general idea, on your own, buy a copy of the latest Price Guide from Krause Publications or Beckett's. You'll have to catalog every card and estimate condition, but these list every card so you can find out if you have something valuable. Cards from this set have sold for every price from $5.00 to $2,200,000. The books cost about $40 and are usually available at any Barnes & Noble or at Amazon. Don't do anything rash.

If you do have a Plank and 3 Magie and your intent is sell, then I would say contact REA immediately. The t206s are getting the attention but the thing still amazes me more than anything else is sheer quantity of Tin Tops. It's not on the level of the Pirates find, but this is largest group I've heard of. I don't know how many Fritsch has, but it may give him a run and would be a huge find for the hobby.

Check the Tin Tops and see if there is a Jackson or Thorpe there. If you have either of them, those 2 cards alone will blow away any the t206s you have.

Thorpe may not be on some checklists as it has more a mythical status than a real one. Supposedly Larry Fritsch owns one, I don't know anyone that has seen it or even a picture of it. I have my doubts about the one int he other thread because it doesn't look like any other Colgan ever made.

skydash, my advice would be - DO NOT SELL THESE CARDS! No matter who gives you an estimate of value, you will receive mostly low ball offers. You are looking at 6 figures with these cards. Get as many estimates as you can and study as much information about them as possible. I highly recommend researching these cards for a few years before making any decisions. You don't want a deal you will regret the rest of your life. Take care, and enjoy the cards! I envy you!

P.S. Do you have a Ty Cobb red background with a Ty Cobb King of the Tobacco Smoking World stamped on the back of the card? If so, that card is extremely rare and valued between 17k-75k. Any other Ty Cobb red background T206 is worth about 4k in great condition. Be careful!

if he produces a picture of 3 Magie's and Plank sitting next to each other. That or if he can provide a picture of a bunch of Tin Tops showing just the backs. If you are going to create a lie, claiming there are TinTops isn't exactly the normal route to go, but I would love to see a picture of the back of TT's more than anything else to help prove this.

Not sure about this whole situation, but assuming you are not pulling anyones leg...are you sure the Colgans say "25 Tin Tops" on top of back or do they state "Stars of the Diamond". If they say the latter they are not of the "Tin Top" variety but the more common E254.

I don't know what to think. It's odd it took this gentleman six minutes from the time Jay posted what cards he should look for to come back with he has all of them expect Wagner. Seems it would take just a bit longer for someone to go through 1200 T206's if they are unsure of what they are looking at.

Also is at least odd that his wife's great grandfather (assuming that is the person that collected all this) would have had a collection back in the day with basically all the backs...did he smoke each brand of cigarettes? I also thought there were a couple brands that would have been much more difficult to come by in South Carolina...or anywhere in the south.

Maybe I'm just too skeptical. If it is real...whoopee somebody is going to have a nice Christmas.

Firstly.....let me express my COMPLETE understanding regarding ANY skepicism my posts are generating. If I was a collector,I would'nt believe what I was saying either!!Now you understand why I was hesitant to even post this question on an open forum.That being said,how else is someone in my position supposed to find out what these things are worth?? I did'nt want to go to some auction house web site and get railroaded. I looked at a bunch of sites before I posted on this one,and this is the only one I'm using.I've found in the past that when buying say....a car,the best place to go is an owners forum to get the"real story".Well,that's exactly what I'm doing here!!I have only been in posession of these things for a short while,so all of this is a new thing for me.I truly appreciate all of y'alls input,and as I said in the previous post...I've got a whole heckuva lot better things to do with my time than wasting yours!
SO....please be patient with my situation.I will accept all advice. I'm not that much of a "computer guy",so if someone will tell me how to post a digital picture on this site I will take all the pictures you want!!
