Cobb was a lefty.

Not sure if it's him or not, but it definitely looks like him. Neat pic, either way!

Edited to add...on second thought, I think he did THROW right handed.

Does the "H" on his shirt give a hint that may be helpful?
Some of our more knowledgeable historians can surely put their detective instincts to work.

Cobb batted as a southpaw but threw as a righty.
Nay, but could surely pass for his twin brother.

The seller is convinced this is Cobb from 1916. I mentioned to him that Cobb was a righty and that if this is Cobb then it well before 1916 as Cobb looked much older by then. I don't think the negative is reversed on the photo either because the lettering is almost always on the players left side of his uniform.

I will go ahead and out the auction then since the majority here think it is not Cobb.

I just don't think that this picture is anywhere close to old enough for it to be Cobb. For it to be Cobb this would have to be the in the 1900-1905 range. Notice the Glove appears to have webing which would place it in the teens at least. Also does anyone else think that the house in the background looks like it is later time wise. I would not be surprised if the photo is actually from the 30's- maybe its a shot of Cobb's illigetimate son- from all we hear about Cobb there must have been at least a couple of those running around during the 30's

Nay. The only barnstorming tour that I know of that Cobb participated in was in Cuba around 1910. I think the uniforms used for that tour were white. Also, how many pics of Cobb clowning around do you see?

Have to second Paul's observation. The first thing that struck me, was, knowing Cobb's pride, he would have considered that pose undignified. Not him.

Cobb played in many unsanctioned games (he was fined by the commissioner at least once for this); however, I concur with Paul and Bob -- no way would Cobb clown like that in a picture. No one took himself more seriously than he.

Definitely not Cobb...Jason is right, this guy is too young for the time period seller claims for it to be Cobb. Dan is right, too, the photo is NOT reversed because the buttons and belt are on the proper way (the logo as Dan stated is almost always on the left, but the way the shirt closes is far more telltale I think to prove it's not reversed). Cool pic anyway. Wish the guy had spelled "Tyrus" right in the subtitle. The Georgia Peach is spinning in his grave.

This guy has emailed me about 5 or 6 times now saying stuff like "People looked younger back then than they do nowadays", "Plus he was a base stealer which kept him slim", "again, must have been the glove they had handy since when barnstorming, he probably did not carry glove to all locations.."

Other people must be emailing him as well because one of his emails to me asked me for my email address???

edited to add: Wow this guy is going on an email binge....he's sent me two more emails since I posted this.

just finished rereading Stump's magnificent tome on Cobb
and feel more strongly than ever that the crazy peach had aged
himself prematurely by this date. this guy in the photo looks young still.

Steve, that is hilarious. Dan, sounds like you got a live one...unfortunately his perceptions are crazy. People tend to look OLDER in old photos to us. Check out any early graduation photo, they already look like businessmen and secretaries. This is definitely a younger kid.

Definitely Cobb. If not, then Joe Jackson. Also possibly Jim Thorpe or Josh Gibson.

Oh boy...his latest email to me states that he went to Ask.com and it shows him batting left handed and that a relative of Cobb's has said it is him so who is he to question a relative of Cobb.

I have a photo coming in the mail as I type this that has Ty Cobb's real brother Paul in it.

Back to the topic at hand this guy emailed me again this morning with correspondence to someone named Ron Cobb who is apparently Ty Cobb's relative and has said that it is Cobb. To be sure I googled the email address of this person and sure enough it's a real person living in Georgia.

I still don't think it's Ty, but at least one of his relatives believes it to be him.

Yes, he emailed me when I asked how he knew for sure if it was Ty Cobb. He says Ron Cobb of the Cobb Museum told him it was Ty cobb.

Wasn't there another thread with a team photo that had a Cobb lookalike in it a while back? This might be that same guy? Is anyone here good at finding old threads that have Cobb photo lookalikes in them and we can compare?

Steve,

That's a cute scan of Cobb, I suppose in Cobb's later years he started gaining weight.
