Default Need your help in classifying a strip card

Posted By: Neal

I picked up a strip card from a fellow board member a few weeks ago. Thinking it was a W516. I am looking through my 2006 SCD and can't seem to figure out which strip it is exactly? Is it W516-1,W516-1-2 or a W516-2-2

Your help is appreciated always!

W516-1-2 Speaker No. 5

W516-2-2 Speaker No. 6

So it's W516-1-2

Edit:

Can't be W516-1 as the IFC Symbol not backwards on the W516-1

Isn't that a W516-1-2? Speaker is card #5 in the W516-1-2 set. Card #6 in the W516-2-2 set. Also, the IFC is backwards and it is in black, red and yellow color tones

Beat me to it:-)

Is that a 5 in the bottom right? If so it is a W516-1 according to Old Carboard.

It's difficult to say, with the missing ink, if that is a 5 or a 6. But the reversed (c) symbol tells us that the card is a W516-2-2.

Zinn, You may have meant to say -2-2 as there is not a W516-1-2 designation, so it is not that.

I will say that the number does look a lot like it is a 5 and that would suggest that the card is actually a fake.

Thanks,

Andy

Andy:

My SCD (2006) on page 526 has a W516-1-2. Speaker is number 5.

W516-2-2 appears on page 527 and Speaker is number 6.

Both have the IFC symbol reversed.

W516-1 that also appears on page 526 has a number 5 Speaker BUT has a correct IFC symbol.

Maybe the SCD is wrong?

Zinn

Now I'm confused (actually I was long before this post.) The card I scanned below is supposed to be a W516-2-2. According to the Old Cardboard site it is a W516-2-1 because of the type. Who is correct Old Cardboard or SGC?

That is a W516-2-1.

Number in lower left corner. Reversed IFC symbol.

W516-2-2 has the number in the lower right hand corner.

Both are number 3.

Thiese sets are broken up into two different categories based 1st on the checklists. The Speaker will be #5 in all sets under "W516-1" umbrella, and will be #6 in all sets under W516-2 umbrella. The second thing that determines category is the IFC/IFS symbol and font type used.

W516-1-1 (mistakenly listed as simply W516-1 in 2007 book) and W516-2-3 have IFS/IFC symbol correct.
W516-1-2, W516-2-1, and W516-2-2 have IFC/IFS symbol reversed.

W516-1-1, W516-1-2, and W516-2-2 have hand written font
W516-2-1 and W516-2-3 have serif font.

The Speaker is from W516-1-2 and the Johnson is W516-2-1

Yes, thank you Rhett. I am always happy to be corrected when I think I know more than I do. I had a feeling I would be corrected in this thread.

So there are five different W516 "types"? This forum always teaches me something.

edited to add: My apologies Zinn.

Thanks,

Andy

This series of strips has a parallel boxing series (W529). Since Burdick didn't bother to split the subtypes and no one else did either, I did it and numbered the subsets consecutively rather than subdividing by types. The variants I can confirm are:

Type 1: IFC symbol correct, numbered starting at 1, handwritten legend
Type 2: IFC symbol reversed (i.e., image flipped), numbered same as Type 1, handwritten legend
Type 3: IFC symbol reversed, numbers reversed (i.e, card #1 is now card #10), handwritten legend
Type 4: IFC Symbol correct, numbered starting at 50, typeset legend
Type 5: IFC symbol reversed, numebering same, typset legend
Type 6: IFC Symbol reversed, numbering reversed, typset legend

There are also a ton of color variations, shading variations, etc. It is by far the most complex set of boxing strips and I have no reason to believe that the baseball cards aren't just as confusing and complex.

Using the above logic, is this Speaker I just picked up a W516-2-2? Thanks!

Nope, it is actually W516-2-1

serif font is only found on the W516-2-1 & W516-2-3, both would have Speaker as #6 but since the IFC symbol is backwards that makes it W516-2-1.

Confusing, I know
