All,

After 26 years of collection, the past 13 of which have been vintage card collecting, I've decided to liquidate my collection. I have no regrets and feel the time is right to pass my collection onto someone else. I've decided rather than selling off parts of my collection at a time, the whole thing will go at once. My question to the forum is: which dealer is the most professional and fair in terms of purchasing a large collection? Or is consigning to an auction house the way to go? Any help would be appreciated.

I am sure that you are going to get a lot of response from this board all wanting to help you with your sell of your cards. Give me a e-mail with a list of what type of merchandise you have and I will honestly help you out. Just give me a chance to prove myself and you won't be dissappointed.

I think you should sell the cards on ebay for the highest possible realization unless you have some really high end pieces. If that is the case you should consign them to a major auction house.

I too would be interested in learning more about the collection. I am a dealer and a collector and pay very aggressively. Don't sell until you explore all options and the reputations of those making offers.

While most of the board members look for Pre WW I items, I specialize in items from the 1930s through 1962 or so. I would be delighted to submit a quote on items that fall in those years. I buy all conditions, stars and commons.

I would have a sincere interest in purchasing your collection as one unit. My company handles all grades of cards, all varieties of autographs and memorabilia. Very few in this industry deal with the diversity of material that we do. We also have relatively unlimited financial resources to handle any size collection.

With all due respect to the dealers who've posted, there is simply no way that a dealer can deliver a better price than one of the top-tier auctioneers because they are looking for wholesale purchases to flip into the retail market, while the auctions set the high end retail market. Just remember that commissions are negotiable, especially for top-drawer merchandise. That said, if you want to hit the best retail market directly, post your stuff on the BST thread here--there are a lot of appreciative deep pockets and no commissions.

Now that I've offended everyone, I'll go back to work

BTW, if you have boxing cards in the mix, I pay retail prices for stuff I need for my collection. LMK.

YOu would be better off selling to a collector like myself because I am a COLLECTOR. Being the end buyer for what I want you dont have to worry about me leaving room for a "flip" like a dealer would. I collect all Pre War HOFers, however I do buy entire collections and would like a complete list.

Eric - I recommend giving Scott Gaynor a call. You can package it all up, send it to him, and he does the rest for a reasonable commission. That's the way I plan to go, and in the very near future. Seriously, do you think any of these guys are going to offer you any more than ebay-15%?

I for one cannot wait to see this unidentifiable collection that will be sold by a well recognized name in the hobby. I guess we can attribute the Erik V collection to just about any group of cards that we see come up for auction under any of the many known auction outlets.

Got to give the gent credit. He managed to peak many of our interests and generate a 30+ post thread, in which only a few insults were made. I LOVE THIS HOBBY!!!!
