Default Liquidating Collection

All,

After 26 years of collection, the past 13 of which have been vintage card collecting, I've decided to liquidate my collection. I have no regrets and feel the time is right to pass my collection onto someone else. I've decided rather than selling off parts of my collection at a time, the whole thing will go at once. My question to the forum is: which dealer is the most professional and fair in terms of purchasing a large collection? Or is consigning to an auction house the way to go? Any help would be appreciated.

I am sure that you are going to get a lot of response from this board all wanting to help you with your sell of your cards. Give me a e-mail with a list of what type of merchandise you have and I will honestly help you out. Just give me a chance to prove myself and you won't be dissappointed.

I think you should sell the cards on ebay for the highest possible realization unless you have some really high end pieces. If that is the case you should consign them to a major auction house.

I too would be interested in learning more about the collection. I am a dealer and a collector and pay very aggressively. Don't sell until you explore all options and the reputations of those making offers.

Thanks,
Greg

I will only ask that if you have any P2s (I need 3 left to complete the set) or T205s (5 left) in your collection that I'd really appreciate a chance to purchase any that you might have from my want list.

Thanks!

While most of the board members look for Pre WW I items, I specialize in items from the 1930s through 1962 or so. I would be delighted to submit a quote on items that fall in those years. I buy all conditions, stars and commons.

You'll probably have all kinds of people from this board interested in what you have alone. Collectors, dealers, Auction site owners...all are here. If interested, perhaps posting the collecting where all those interested may take a look would save you some time.

....sounds intriguing, Erik. Like a number of others on the board, I would be interested in knowing the content of your collection. So many dealers, serious collectors, and auction houses are represented on the Board that you would conceivably have no trouble selling everything here. Add me to your list, if you will: mpeich@comcast.net

Best of luck with the liquidation. Cheers, Mike

Erik,

I would have a sincere interest in purchasing your collection as one unit. My company handles all grades of cards, all varieties of autographs and memorabilia. Very few in this industry deal with the diversity of material that we do. We also have relatively unlimited financial resources to handle any size collection.

Most important, I have paid and do pay big prices for good collections and deal in a simple and professional manner. I also run an auction that accepts consignments and works very hard to maximize value for all consignors.

Thanks much,
Steve Verkman

Eric,
I would be interested in your collection and would be prepared to auction it for you. I would sell each item of reasonable value as an individual lot in a full color catalog. I have been auctioning vintage material for almost twenty years. I provide cash advances and have a solid reputation that anyone on this board can vouch for. You will get the most money by auctioning it and not selling it directly. If you are interested please call me at 718-855-7513 during business hours or email me at bsloate@att.net. Thank you, Barry Sloate

I know that you are approaching people on the board to get the right advice. I am willing to point you in the right direction once I have a better understanding of what you have.

I can be reached at patrick_preece@msn.com.

Or if you would rather not send a list, you can always contact Rob Lifson (Robert Edwards Auctions). He is very reputable, easy to deal with and honest. He can be reached at robertedwardauctions.com or at 908-226-9900

But if you must, you know best.

It sounds like this forum might be your best auction, but if you're looking for an auction house, I would lean towards Rob Lifson's (Robert Edwards Auctions).

Stay well,
Joe

With all due respect to the dealers who've posted, there is simply no way that a dealer can deliver a better price than one of the top-tier auctioneers because they are looking for wholesale purchases to flip into the retail market, while the auctions set the high end retail market. Just remember that commissions are negotiable, especially for top-drawer merchandise. That said, if you want to hit the best retail market directly, post your stuff on the BST thread here--there are a lot of appreciative deep pockets and no commissions.

Now that I've offended everyone, I'll go back to work

BTW, if you have boxing cards in the mix, I pay retail prices for stuff I need for my collection. LMK.

YOu would be better off selling to a collector like myself because I am a COLLECTOR. Being the end buyer for what I want you dont have to worry about me leaving room for a "flip" like a dealer would. I collect all Pre War HOFers, however I do buy entire collections and would like a complete list.

It's amazing how everyone is willing to crawl over the backs of everyone else to get a shot at a collection that no one knows anything about.

Couldn't agree with you more completely. Whomever the seller is of this lot can politely take my name off of the list of caring about it. You will get the most money by putting it in a public auction or doing ebay. regards all....and good luck to the seller...sorry to hear you are getting out of the hobby...

If you think these guys are in the hobby just for fun, you are nuts.

Eric - I recommend giving Scott Gaynor a call. You can package it all up, send it to him, and he does the rest for a reasonable commission. That's the way I plan to go, and in the very near future. Seriously, do you think any of these guys are going to offer you any more than ebay-15%?

All,

Thanks to everyone who expressed an interest in my collection as well as those who offered suggestions as to the best means in departing with it. In the very near future I will be contacting a well recognized name in the card collecting hobby with my collection.

Best Regards,

ErikV.

This has been an amusing! Everyone on the board writing small essays on 'why they should be the chosen one'.

Does anyone know what Eric V. has? We could be 'woo'ing' him for 1988 Topps vending boxes?

You have to go with a big auction house or use SCGaynor on eBay.

Put it on ebay. It'll take a little time but if your stuff is valuable you'll do well plus everybody will get a shot at it.

I for one cannot wait to see this unidentifiable collection that will be sold by a well recognized name in the hobby. I guess we can attribute the Erik V collection to just about any group of cards that we see come up for auction under any of the many known auction outlets.

Got to give the gent credit. He managed to peak many of our interests and generate a 30+ post thread, in which only a few insults were made. I LOVE THIS HOBBY!!!!

If I were you I would put it on QVC-real late, like 3am, and have 1 or 2 of those loud mouths hawk it like it was the 8th wonder of the world --THEN you'll see some cash.
