Default E92 and T227 blank-backs?

Posted By: Tim Newcomb

Anyone know what the story is on these?

E92: I heard (from Dan McKee, I think) that they are a recognized variation-- does anyone know anything else?

T227: anyone have a clue? I guess the card could be skinned, but the back is so smooth and glossy in texture that I'm inclined to think it may not be--

Default E92 and T227 blank-backs?

E blank backs: Can't say they are E92s as the art was used for E92s, E101, or E102s. Since McLean doesn't appear in the E102 set it does narrow it down a little.

T227 blank backs: Mastro sold some blank back examples a few years ago and if I recall correctly they said they were cut from advertising cards or posters.

Default E92 BBs

bringing back this 2005 thread from the dead...

I won the E92 Chase blank back last night from Sterling. There is very scant information on the these cards on Net54, or elsewhere online.

PSA has a few hand cut blank backs on their population report. Most others I have seen have (seemingly) factory cuts

Does anybody have any insights on E92 blank backs???
Would love to hear some thoughts on these, or post a card if you have one---

Here is a thread with a lot of information on the more difficult E92 backs including the blank backs. it also includes some good discussion on whether they are/are not actually E92s.

I owned an E92 Seigle blank back many many years ago and sold it to an E card blank back collector who reached out to me. He told me that blank backs that have an E92 subject on the front are considered E92s even if the front is featured in other sets. He said this was due to the fact that E92's were the easiest of the related E sets to find. So if it's blank, it is considered an E92 because if you considered it and E101, for example, it would be worth a bit more but you can't prove it's an E101 since there is not back. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, I've always considered blank backs that contain an E92 front to be E92 blank backs.

Here is Wagner throwing. In my opinion, if it’s got the E92 front, it’s necessary part of a back run (to the extent a blank exists)

I believe the grading companies have always fallen back to an 'E92' designation on these blank back E-cards, because it is the most common of the card sets that utilize the artwork seen in several sets.

The Chase fielding artwork can be seen in all the E92 sets (Crofts Candy, Crofts Cocoa, Dockman and Nadja), E101, E102, E105, E106, as well as the D303 sets and T216 sets. Due to several factors that eliminate certain sets, your Chase can be from any of the E92 sets, E101 or E102. Below is a copied post that I made on that previously linked thread:

Paul is accurate in that he has the only known E90-1 blank back subject (Krause), because Krause is not seen in any other set but the E90-1.

I have removed E105 and E106 cards from the below list due to the points made. The below list shows the possible other sets (E90-1, E101 and E102) that these subjects are in besides the E92 sets.

Chase fielding: E101, E102
Crawford red: E101, E102
Davis sliding: E101
Dougherty: E90-1, E101, E102
Gibson back view: E101
Lajoie fielding: E101, E102
McGraw: E101
McLean: E90-1, E101
Miller fielding: E90-1, E101, E102
Schlei: E101
Seigle: E90-1, E101
Smith: E101, E102
Tinker batting: E101, E102
Wagner throwing: E90-1, E101, E102
Zimmerman: E101, E102

As you can see, besides all these cards being in the E92 sets, they are all also in the E101. With Paul's E90-1 Krause showing that it is possible for E90-1 cards (and thus other sets) to have blank backs, I think we can only narrow things down to the above list, unless there are some recognizable printing differences between sets of the same subject.

Just like tobacco cards and blank backs being seen in all the major sets, my guess is that E90-1, E101 and E102 could possibly be the source of these blank backs.

Default Blank Back Banter

This is great---
really enjoying hearing some banter about the blank backs
What at first seemed to me the most boring back of all the E92 options, is now seemingly the most intriguing.
Perhaps it's the uncertainty that they are in fact even E92's to begin with that I find so appealing
