Wow! I just got my catalog today and this auction is amazing (be careful not to mistake the catalog for a magazine--it comes in the same type of plastic wrapper). I guess this is the scaled down version of the usual Mastro auction but the quality of vintage material is still really high. The auction is filled with S.F. Hesses, Yum Yums, Kalamazoo Bats cabinets, Colgans Chips, Old Judges and lots of rarities. Best of all the lots are small, very collector friendly, and each lot has only a $100 minimum bid. Also, in a really great improvement to the usual 5 minute rule, each lot closes seperately if it receives no bid for 15 minutes after 10PM. This should allow us on the East Coast to bid and still get some sleep that night.
Adam--there are plenty of vintage boxing cards for us to duke it out on.

Mine came through regular mail as well. Jay's right--it's easy to mistake for a magazine or an unsolicited catalogue, but the quality of lots is still fantastic.

On page 2 it says: "If you have an account or have bid with us before, you are already registered for this auction. ...If you are a new collector to MastroNet, you may register to bid in the auction by clicking "Register" on the website. David--It wasn't made by Goodwin, they weren't around. It was made up for display purposes, possibly to commemorate some anniversary.

I don't so much mind the usual bs, but wish they would put a marker indicating when the actual description started. An asterisc, red dot or different font would work fine for me.

Sometimes you enjoy reading the bs, sometimes you want to read about what you're about to place a bid on.

Does Mastronet guarantee the authenticity of all the non-graded cards? There are a few tobacco cards I am interested in.
Also, is anyone on here from Chicago? There is a radio show on Saturday mornings from 7-8am called "Sports Collecting", and Brian Marren, who is head of consignments at Mastronet is on the show. It is very interesting.

by their staff (who are very good)...i think if there is any question as to authenticity(of any item) they would get it to a grader or expert in that particular field---see the old judge proofs post.

WMVP Radio 1000 does have an interesting show on Saturday mornings as referenced above. Tom Morgan who owns a card shop in Naperville, IL is the main host and Brian Marren of Mastronet is like a co-host in a sense. The show does drag occasionally when, for example, a caller will ask about the future value of his unopened box of 1988 Donruss cards. On the other hand there is some very good discussion of many non-card items such as autographed game-used items. Light and easy to listen to show.

Every Wednesday, the previous week's show is uploaded. if you go to MLB.com and click on audio, you can find it.
However, there is one caveat. On this past week's show, Morgan said that MLB would not be uploading any of the October shows, due to the baseball playoffs.

I'm still looking for George Reed's T205 and Mr. Pringle's N172, but I did see the Grey Cup last November in Regina. As Regina makes people say, sunshine can be highly overrated, especially when the football is played at -10.

Julie--Do not sell the level of expertise on vintage cards at Mastronet short. Between Kevin and Ron and Bill and the rest of the people I would match their expertise on vintage material with anyone, including the people you mentioned. They have decades of experience and are very thorough. Also, unlike some other auction houses, they realize that they don't know everything and seek expert outside advice when needed. Others tend to guess or make things up.

Mastronet has some of the most experienced people in the hobby. They are always willing to help. If they don't know what it is they will say "that" also. Shoot, since I am addicted to things most people could care less about, and have thereby got a little knowledge that is almost useless, they have even called me to get my opinion on a few things. Still have a lot of lots that are too much stuff for me. Was it really necessary to place 6 N269's in one lot again just like the last two full auctions; the damned things have been pulling in $1000 a card over the last few auctions. I thought the idea was to give some of us smaller fry a shot at the cards.

<br />I could go into gorey details, but I don't think anyone is interested. Besides, the item was legitimate, and the phoney mount came off...
I've never been burned in any way by Mastro--but I'd still trust those other guys on 19th century stuff over Mastro.

I think they run a great auction, and their customer service is excellent. Someone just sent me a back scan--TODAY. Also, as you say, when they';re wrong, they admit it--like the Ichiro bat.They removed it from the auction.

You have to give your credit card for identification purposes. I contacted Lauren at Mastronet and she said that Mastronet will not charge your credit card the $75.00, that is only for the Premier auction.

Julie--I'm sure Kevin knows an albumen photo when he sees one. I think Kevin had a view that the items were not period and he just took the additional step to verify his view with an expert. Kevin has been collecting and dealing in 19th century material for a long time and in fact had one of the best Old Judge cabinet collections ever at one time. I would rank Kevin as one of the top five experts on N172s. Ron Oser made the most significant discovery ever of Kalamazoo Bats with almost all the extremely rare N.Y. Giant cards known today coming from this find. And no one has better instincts about cards, regardless of the period, than Bill.

I'll testify that Kevin Struss is a smart and capable guy. I have great respect for him. He's the rare hobby 'big wig' who isn't shy to admit when he doesn't know something and ask for a second opinion-- which is a strength, not a weakness. MastroNet is lucky to have him as an employee.

I like and respect Julie as well ... From my experience, both Juie and Kevin are top notch folks.

Auction begins tomorrow. It will be really interesting to see how this new format works. I'm not sure how you can keep track of multiple items, when each lot closes seperately, without leaving ceiling bids. However, for the nimble, this may present some real opportunities.
