To me, it appears either a very "hurried" signature, or not authentic. Rather hard to tell which, as the sig is partially obscured by the printing, and has been squeezed into a rather small space.

Is it in pencil or pen? I don't think a forger would be as apt to sign in pencil, as most of the "bad" signatures seem to be in ink.

I wouldn't give up on it that easy. Take a look at the PC David posted on this thread. So, it's a little sloppy and appears hurried. Appears he wrote postacrds the same way.

I also have an item with multiple autos in pencil. It was deemed not authentic by Spence several years ago when SCP apparently sent him a photo of my piece. It
has 12 pencil autographs from inductees at the centennial june 12th. I may be just rationalizing, but I always thought that pencil was worth less than ink...and that if a forger was good it made no sense in doing a piece in pencil.
I am going to forward it to the PSA/DNA dudes ...when I think I can handle the disappointment

Agree.... would not give up on this one. The autograph was fit into a small space, and it could well be a hurried signature. The fact that it's in pencil is likely a plus as well.

The REAL autograph gurus in this forum (a couple of which have probably seen this post already) are probably refraining from comment, as they are typically paid to render opinions on authenticity.

But it would sure be interesting to hear what they think about this one.
JB.... RS..... DA.... any others?

not to hijack this thread, but opinions on my piece would also be appreciated.
The providence is the following: John Kieran was a New York Times sports writer who obtained autos for his daughter Helen. In 1995 this piece was sold to a dealer in New Mexico who had sent pics to Sotheby's and sold piece with a quasi letter of authenticity from Sotheby's ( with a disclaimer that is similar to what now is called a quick opinion by PSA.)
The autos are on what appears to be a cardboard back of an autograph book etc. Date is hard to read but is at top.
MastroNet loked at it and had mixed feelings. The fact that it had the date on it seemed hokie(suggested fraud), pencil and sloppiness hinted authenticity.
SCP sent pics to Spence and was told likely not authentic.
Opinions welcome.
I have seen many varieties of collections of autos from june 12th 1939 and it is mindboggling. If this is an amateurish fraud...please be gentle...

Mark... What an odd piece! I bet it is a bit of an enigma to the authenticators. Some appear almost perfect (Speaker, Wagner Collins) and others look very weak (LaJoie, Johnson).

I wonder if someone at some point added a few "secretarial sigs" to this otherwise authentic piece?

"The providence is the following: John Kieran was a New York Times sports writer..."

Likely not genuine.

Autographically yours,

Roger Williams

P.S. The ticket is good. I surmise that it was signed while Babe was holding it loosely in his hand--that explains the inconsistencies in its formation. But, as our friend Mark so kindly pointed out, a couple of us make at least a fraction of our living being compensated for our opinions. For a very affordable professional opinion, feel free to utilize the services of PSA's "Quick Opinion", or email me scan for the same fee!

At the risk of sounding pathetic.... Is there any hope?
Jodi, do you think "likely" ....or "definately" ....not genuine.
thanks
