Catcher masks

Hi-
I recenty found a nice old catcher's mask for what I hope was a very decent price at an antique shop in Osakis Minnesota (I am travelling on business and am in Sauk Centre MN - birth place of Sinclair Lewis - for a few days, working with the local hospital). I know there was a thread not too long ago about a homemade spider type catcher's mask but the image on the thread is no longer available. I was hoping to see any and all examples of preWWII catcher masks so I might be able to compare the one I bought today. Because I am travelling I will not be able to scan my example until later in the week, but please feel free to share your mask, and approxiamte date if known.

Alan,

that was me - I recently got the mask appraised for a second opionon - if you still have it next time you see me - I can look at it for you or send me a photo. The one I have below is a brid cage mask, spider masks give you more protection and were made a bit later

Thank you guys very much! I will try and compare my mask with the ones you linked to and the older mask from Jimmy (I will definitely show it to you when I next see you). I love how quick the responses are on this board!

Well, it does not look exactly like the ones pictured (although it looks a little bit like yours, Jim). I will scan it and post by the end of the week. Thanks again for all of the help (and please feel free to post more images!).

Hi-
Here is the mask I picked up earlier this week. It is in rough shape, but I figured it was a good deal for the price I paid. I tried comparing this mask to the ones on the website and the one Jimmy pictured, but I could not match it exactly (although I am not too good at that sort of thing). It does not have a manufacturer name, and the padding is individual pouches of something (it crunches when you squeeze it). Please post if anyone knows an approximate age on this mask, and please feel free to post your own masks.

Alan,

the mask is longer then the one I posted and has more padding 1890-1910 I would say - the link above with the masks was a good reference. Most likley hand made same as mine - does the padding have straw for filling?

The prices on National Passtime are quite a bit higher than you should expect to pay or receive for masks IMO.

I completely agree with you with regards to the pricing. It is, however, a free albeit small picture guide to dating early masks (assuming it is generally accurate).
