Who owns them....and who? On a side note....E300 Plows Candy cards will now attract the same type of desire as the E107's.....just my opinion! Take care!

Mike --

The E107 Breisch Williams Series was produced nearly a decade earlier than the Plow's Candy Set and contains over twice as many subjects, including such notable 19th and early 20th century players as Jack Chesbro, Ed Delahanty, Addie Joss, Willie Keeler, Rube Waddell, Vic Willis, and Cy Young. The 1903 Breisch Williams Set is also generally considered the prototype or forerunner to many of the later tobacco and candy cards.

With the exception of Ty Cobb, I really don't see what the allure of the E300 series is -- the “cards” (I almost want to write “lobby cards”) are an unusual size and were not discovered until the 1960s. The words “file copy” come to mind. In my opinion the E107 Series will always be far more popular AND more legitimate...and the name “Williams” has a certain consonance to it as well

Agreed....The player selection with the E107's is hard to beat (and even harder to acquire)! My rational for the E300 comment is based on the following....I would assume as a whole, the E300's are rarer than the E107 issue. The recent E300 batch from Mastro enabled many of collectors (myself included) a chance to "see" a great deal of the HOF's for the first time. The previously viewed black sheep "E" cards couldn't be hotter right now. If the winner of the Mastro lot chooses to break the lot up, the HOF's will fetch a premium. I think the E300's will attain the same cult type status....especially to the "E" card/Type collector. Anyhow, just one mans opinion. Thanks for the response, take care!

You and the guy who won the E300s can have them. As for me, I'd much rather have E107s...and based on some of our wantlists, so would most serious collectors of non-contemporary, vintage cards. Who knows though, maybe the phrase "got any E300s?" will soon become commonplace at conventions and chatboards worldwide.

I don't follow you. How does my response "beg the question" or reason badly? I provide several very good reasons why the E300 series will never reach the same level of popularity as the E107 Series. If you disagree I would certainly like to hear your rationale. Perhaps you misunderstand what "beg the question" means????

I think the way you were speaking about the E107's it sounded like you might have some to sell. No harm meant I am sure. When someone in business, such as yourself, gives some very valid reasons for something, and is persuasive, then a lot of folks might think you have something to gain. On this particular issue I do not believe that to be the case. So do you have some e107's to sell? best regards..

Yes -- I have a group in my private collection but none are for sale. My response to Mike was not motivated by an elaborate marketing scheme.

Michael,

Since you stated that you would much rather have E107's than E300's, I thought that there was a possibility that you owned some E107's. As it turns out, I was correct. Also, assuming that you make your living through the resale of cards (or at least in part), you might consider selling some or all your E107's for the right price. Am I that off base? If you ever consider selling them, please let me know. I will pay BMW prices. Thanks.

This was a card I won....I have limited knowledge of the issue but needed an example for the "type" collection. I am curious what knowledge others may have regarding the issue (so far, no takers)....didn't mean to rock the boat.

I saw Warren, and Davis in the Cobb listing, but can't find anything in the SCD catalog. Maybe I'm blind. Also, is the SCD catalog setting, rather than reflecting, prices in some instances? (uh oh, did I ask that?)

Sorry, I only have 15 or so E107s with no dupes. Again, I'm not trying to sell or trade the ones that I own. I'm simply stating that as a collector, I would never pay "big money" for an E300. Scarcity of this issue (E300) is irrelevant if demand is small for the given price structure. Sure, I'm opinionated on this subject, but I think a collector would really have to be a novice to put E107s and E300s in the same category. I don't own any E300s and I doubt I ever will -- even at 25% of book. I think someone discovered a big group of these that was never distibuted through conventional means (i.e., similar to a test issue like 1961 Topps Dice Game). In fact, when I think about E300s, the word "apathetic" comes to mind.

thanks mike, just wanted to check if any you had any dupe E107's available. i agree that a very thinly traded market, despite how rare an issue may be does not make for a good long term hold. the E300's while quite scarce are basically an anomoly among E cards. as you pointed out earlier, people would beat the doors down for just 1! E107, common or hofer for a type set, the buyers FAR exceed the sellers. comparing to E300 the buyer list would be very scant as would be the seller list, so basically you have a dead market. as for the recent E300's they went to a collector and will not be on the market anytime soon. i guess you could say they are so scarce they are not readily collected, which is basically an asinine statement, as anything scarce is heavily collected. so the hunt continues for the diehard collectors and we armchair collectorbacks(new terminology) second guess the hobby's every move.

scott

p.s. if you may by any chance come across further e107's i would greatly appreciate any opportunity to purchase them, i would pay substantially over market(not book) price, i have over 80 different and am still trying to complete this elusive set.

Sorry to jump on the wagon so late but my vote will always go to the E107s.

I would like to own one E300 but there would have to be nothing else catching my eye to pay the kind of money needed to buy one. Other E-sets will always come first. Kinda like the E286 Ju-Ju Drum Speaker on ebay right now. I'd love to buy it but I've got my eye on a few other cards from sets that willI always come before E286 until I complete those sets which may never happen.

I also agree that E300s are so hard to find most collectors will stay away from them since finding another person to buy the card if you want to sell it - even if you just want to break even will be difficult.

Scott, if you need any money to buy the E107s from the upcoming Lipset auction I'd love to buy from you. Sorry, I have nothing to trade.
