Default Lack of love for r311, r312, r313?

In looking for old threads about these issues, I don't see much. These appear to be very attractive, but they don't get many mentions. Is the size or blank backs or something considered a turn off?

Larger size and a premium, as opposed to an inserted card, are both a bit detrimental to collectability. They had blank backs too.

True rookie cards of DiMaggio in both R312 and 313 (as well as R314--DiMaggio and McCarthy). Over time, IMHO, it will be very hard to keep a good card down, kind of like the change in attitude about postcards. They're still baseball cards. Plus, if you like real action shots, DiMag actually hit a home run in the image captured by the R313 (spring training, I believe, based on the number "6" on the back of his uniform) based on film I've seen of that exact same shot! Plus both are better looking cards than his dead-pan Joe, '36 World Wide Gum card.

Best always,

Larry

How were these cards distributed, by the way?

Thanks Mike. I didn't have my Vg-Ex copy at hand and guess I got the number on Joe's back wrong. As stated, it truly is a great looking card.

Appreciate it,

Larry

In general, B&W issues get very little love. R312s are cool, but have that "mortician makeup" kind of thing going on....not for everyone.

They do have that look....creepy. But to the OP'S point the Rs were fun to collect and readily available 20-30 years ago. Dealers offered them up frequently in SCD....when it was relevant and fun to get in the mailbox.

I have several pastels, including Joe D, and I have the R314 DiMaggio-McCarthy. I like the pastels in particular.
But I believe the reason these don't get great respect is due to the photo-paper stock. While they are designated as cards, they're not cards as in cardboard.
That's the reason that I don't value them as highly.

I agree with this. The quality of the paper, and the fact that there is nothing on the back, makes them seem kind of flimsy. I have several R312s of Billy Sullivan Jr. but I'm not crazy about them
