overgrading

who is going to turn in their card for overgrading, unless they bought it for the higher price/grade and didnt think the card deserved the higher grade and would rather have the lower grade adn the cash difference?

but its still in the higher grade holder for when THEY sell it, so what's the difference? i don't see someone sending a card to sgc complaining it has too high a grade.

The SGC Guarantee

SGC Guarantees that all cards submitted shall be graded by SGC grading experts in accordance with SGC grading procedures. In the event the owner of an SGC card believes that the card has been overgraded with respect to such procedures, the owner may resubmit the card to SGC for a review of the assigned grade.

If the grade determined under such review is lower than that originally assigned to the card, SGC shall, at SGC's discretion, either replace the card or pay the difference between the current fair market value of the card at the newly established grade and the current fair market value of the grade originally assigned to such card, in the form of either cash or grading credit. Due to the volatile nature of the sportscard market and Internet auctions/sales, the selling prices in these auctions do not necessarily represent the current fair market value of any particular sportscard. SGC will determine the current fair market value of a card which is assigned a lower grade on review, based upon what SGC believes to be reliable current market information. Clerical errors with respect to the description or grade of the card(s) which would be obvious upon inspection shall not be subject to the SGC guarantee stated herein.

Sorry to be rude, but what is the point of this post? We all know your opinion on TPG's, you don't use them (I believe), so why do you always have to slam and post about them...

If only they'd refund me for the money I lose cracking slabs

this is a question regarding why someone would return a card for overgrading, just wondering why they would offer this service? if you don't know, that's fine. Why is asking this question a "slam" against them? they have this policy for a reason, but i don't understand why anyone would return a card for overgrading, like returning a car for being too nice.

Don't people send in cards again and again, cracking them out of the slabs, hoping for a higher grade or an overgrade that is borderline higher grade? Why would they send one in and ask SGC to downgrade the grade when people are cracking and sending in cards hoping for a bump in grade? That's all i wanted to know. I dont think the guy with the 10 grade art shell rookie card, that was previously two grades lower is scrambling to send it in to psa or sgc or whoever graded it a ten because he thought it got a grade it didn't deserve? He is probably happier than a clam he can now charge 10 times or more as much for the card.

It's like people sending in an autograph they find out to be bad, and asking psa or jsa to 'correct' the authentication and decertify it, it doesnt happen, even when collectors are made aware the certified autograph is bad, they still keep it in the holder and try to sell it.

i just had an honest question with no ulterior motives, has anyone ever heard of anyone turning in a card for overgrading. maybe kendrick should start it off with the wagenr. but that's psa.

The point of the guarantee isn't that you submitted the card, and it got a better grade than it deserved. It is more for the unsuspecting buyer that purchases the card, assuming certain qualities for that grade, and then when he receives the card, he finds that it is overgraded. For example, you buy a card that is graded as NM (84/7), but you find a spot of paper loss that the grader missed. You might say that you can return it if it's from ebay, but most ebay sellers will not allow returns on graded cards since they will say that the card has been set to that grade by an impartial TPG.

I actually have a card I'm considering asking about downgrading. Yeah, crazy.
Especially since it's a HOFer with a fairly high grade. Like the highest grade for that subject/back high excluding ones from before poses/backs were tracked well. And it's a supposedly tough back. SC350-460 f25.

I was very surprised at the grade. I think it's off by 2-3 grades.

I've been trying to figure out how to present it for a downgrade and present some at the same tiime that I feel were undergraded without it seeming like an inappropriate "deal". All the undergrades are commons and most are only a grade or grade and a half or so off. moneywise I'd probably have to get bumps on all the commons to make up for the drop on the other one.

To answer your question, yes....that is what they are saying. They are saying if you prefer, you are welcome to send it in and take a downgrade in addition to compensation. However, from what I hear, that compensation only comes in the form of free submittions and not cash. I think it's safe to say that most guys would just unload the overgraded card on some other guy via eBay to get their money out of it, buts that's just my opinion.

I have sent back a small group of N302's to SGC. I thought they were trimmed and planned on selling them. They reviewed the cards and explained to me why they gave them numerical grades.

I used this when I purchased an SGC 60 card on ebay and after receiving the card discovered there was a small ink mark on the back. The seller refused a refund so I sent it along with a sub I had going into SGC to have them look at it. They agree they missed the mark and downgraded the card to an SGC 20 and offered a more than fair choice of cash or even more in free submissions to make up for the grade difference. I took the subs. Very happy with the outcome.

Now I had another purchase and sent a PSA 4 I had that had 2 spots of paper loss and a stain on the back to them for review and they said the grade was deserved, really got me upset so I was forced to sell the card at a loss. Worst 4 I have ever seen.
