OK, these are some of the nicest cards ever I've always thought; although I love lenticular cards in general. But can somebody show a scan of the little easel that came packaged with the cards? I only know about them from an old REA auction and have never actually seen an example, but that was in the pre-catalog days and hence, no photo. I've always presumed the easel was thick carboard that was punched out and then "A into B" tabbed for use. Interesting idea by Topps for displaying the 3-D's! Who's got one?

I still need 3 to complete the set. I do have a wrapper. I know Bob has a nice set and can put up scans. I have never seen the easel though and if someone has a picture, would sure like to see what it looks like

I don't think it's Shea, there is no press level and the seats are all blue. But this photo is pre Veterans/3 Rivers, so where was it taken? St. Louis maybe?

Do you really have a Clemente from this set? I've been looking for one for a long time. Congrats.

Chris is right about the Pirates and phillies home parks in the late 60's. The Pirates moved in 71 or 72, the phillies in 71.

Just noticed that the backgrounds on the Maloney and Fairly differ from sheet to sheet.

edited to add: Background on O'Donoghue is different too.

I think the stadium background on O'Donoghue helps explain why we couldn't figure out the stadium background on the Perez. Yankee Stadium?

edited to correct incorrect stadium.

Bob,

The background on your Perez from the sheet is different from the graded Perez above...

Edited to add:

If you look at the PSA 9 Perez above, you will see a guy standing to the right of Perez above his shoulder. Now, if you look at Bob's sheet, you can see a man walking behind Perez to the left. it's almost like a sequence of photos were taken at the same time. The man is walking behind Perez on the sheet, then ended up on his right as on the card.

Jon,

Interesting about the man in the Perez picture. I'd never noticed that before. My card matches the sheet (i.e., no man to our right of Tony).

[Not my sheets by the way. Wish they were.]

Anyone know which is rarer?

I was suspicious about this, so I checked when I got home. There aren't two variations on the Perez. Depending on the angle you hold the card, you can see a player to his (our) left or, turning it slightly, see a player to his (our) right standing behind him. Try it with yours Jim when you get a second.

Bob,

You are correct. It also looks as if there is another player behind Perez if you tilt the card and look behind Perez.

Nope. Those are two extremely tough ones (as I am sure you are well aware). I was shocked by how high the Flood went when I sold my extra 9 ($7,500).

My local card shop just recently picked up a very high grade set of 68 3-ds for $9500 ungraded. He sold it to a local Dr. who is a big collector for $25,000 the next day! Wow is this set that rare to bring that kind money? Anybody have links to were this set has sold recently? Thanks

It all depends where the cards would grade.

If they are 9s and 10s the Doc got an unbelievable bargain.

Bob has some recent data or one could get it on vintage cardprices, com

Jim is right. If it's even a PSA 8 set, then the Dr. got a bargain. VCP has very little data on recent 3-D sales since there haven't been many. They have sales data for the Clemente 10 that sold last December in Mastro ($30K) and some prices for the three common ones (Fairly, Davis, and Maloney).

The only tough card (Clemente isn't considered tough) that there's data on is the Swoboda that sold in October on eBay for $1,703 (PSA 3).

I would think that a PSA 8 set would go for over $30K easily on eBay. The break-up value would be more than that since the Powell, Flood, and Stottlemyre would get a LOT of interest.

The shop owner did tell me that every card was as good as he has ever seen in this particular set. He said being conservative every card would grade a 7 or better and more likely 8s and 9s. He also purchased a complete wilson weiners set which is supposed to be in great shape. Again I am not familiar with that particular set either but he speaks highly of it. Anybody have an idea what a set like that should be bought for? Thanks

Everyone that has not had cards graded on a regular basis thinks their cards should be 7's or 8's. A few months ago some raw cards were posted on this forum with the owner stating they should be in that range, and they were quite obviously 5's or less. Shop owners seem to be the worst about this- it's all part of the "if I'm selling it it's gold, if you're selling it's crap" mentality many of them seem to live by.
That being said, if it is truly a high grade Wilson set (with all borders showing, sharp corners, good gloss and little to no staining) and were graded accordingly it would be 35-40K. Mid grade about half that.

Vanessa -- Anthony is of course totally correct. And don't forget, if the seller is so sure of those grades then you have to ask yourself, "Wouldn't it be in his/her best interest to get those cards graded in the first place, to maximize their own profit, not your own?" Your pattern seems to look for highly-sought-after great-condition cards, usually ungraded, and therefore should sell for much more once you have them. Although we all have an eye out for that, the fact is that among the collected experience of this forum you will find few stories like that. Sure we'd all like a windfall, but what we all really seek are the particular cards we want at a fair price to both parties.

The only reason I mentioned the card dealers opinion of the cards is he is such a highly respected dealer in business today. I am not going to mention his name, because I don't think that would be right. I do trust this persons opinion on cards though, he has been doing this for a very long time and is known by most of the dealer legends around the country. Now that being said , he is asking me if I would be interested in the 54 Wilson wiener set. He hasn't given me a price as of yet so that's why i am posting asking about the set here. I guess I am asking what things to look for in this particular set that drains the value. I have researched mastro and memeory lane and can see what some of these sets go for and do understand thier value. Thank you

I'd be very wary of any dealer that would forego 4-5 figures in extra profit y not having a tough set like Wilson's graded. I suspect it's probably because he knows they won't grade what he is representing them as.
Everyone thinks their cards will grade high- there were some raw cards posted on here a few months ago where the owner said they would grade 7's and 8's, and to anyone that has submitted cards for grading they were pretty obviously 4's and 5's. As you saw on your Dimaggio it can be a pretty rude awakening when a card comes back considerably lower than you had expected. But in time, if you take the oppurtunity to study those cards, you'll see why they graded as they did.
In regards to the Wilsons, having completed the set a few years ago and continually upgrading it, I can tell you they often grade much lower than you would think. Staining and wrinkles can hurt the grade, centering issues with the narrow borders can absolutely kill you. It's a tough set anyway, but condition issues can make it even tougher.

I want to move to Vanessa's area. The dealer she goes to gets the rarest of the rare... He was able to acquire an authentic Ruth and Gehrig signed baseball and now a 1968 3-D set, etc. Why can't I ever find this stuff without having to pay ten of thousands of dollars?
