Default How reliable is the PSA/DNA "Quick Opinion" service on eBay?

Posted By: Accord32

I have found perhaps the holy grail of autographed baseball memorabilia on eBay, the person selling it made numerous spelling mistakes in both the title of the auction and the description and also listed it in the wrong category so not too many people will see it even if they search for it, so I potentially can get this for very cheap.

I just spent the 7 bucks or however much it costs for the PSA/DNA quick opinion service and no more than 20 minutes later I received an e-mail from PSA/DNA with the result that after inspecting the auction they have found the item to be "Likely Genuine".

I'm prepared to spend big money on this item if I have to, and PSA/DNA considers it to be "Likely Genuine" but I don't want to buy this, send it to PSA/DNA and then have them tell me it's a fake.

So my question is, how reliable is the PSA/DNA Quick Opinion service on eBay? Has anyone ever received a "Likely Genuine" response and then submitted it to PSA/DNA only to find that it was fake and the quick opinion service was wrong?

I think I may call PSA/DNA tomorrow and ask them about this.

Thanks a lot

...as reliable as the service itself, which, if you're a regular reader here, you will know is not that reliable at all. ive submitted items to their quick opinion that, when sent to them for authentication, was rejected

they're better than most services but id trust the knowledge of the board members here before anything that psa/dna offered. theyve simply taken on too much of later to be a reliable source for much of anything

You got an answer in 20 minutes and they charged you $7.
Those facts should be all the answer you need.
"Quick" is the operative word here. And you don't even know who at PSA looked at this item.
Do you want quick when it comes to autograph authentications?

which tells the entire pattern for each of our bodies and brains? If you can think of a more ridiculous name for someone peering at a computer monitor at an auction page and telling you whether the thing is "genuine" I'd be FASCINATED to hear about it! Yurg....

My personal opinion is that one of the essential things in buying autographs is knowing the seller. Considering the amount of fakes and scams out there, it would would seem essenital to be dealing with someone who you is knowledgeable and reputabale or, at least, that you know is honest and reliable.

To me, who is the seller is just about as important as is where the LOA came from. In part, this is because if there's a problem with the autograph you have to get your money back from the seller not the LOA.

But do you know what DNA stands for without looking it up?

If BGS offers the special BVG service for grading older cards, should PSA offer a special RNA service for authenticating older autographs?

Actually, PSA has a great business model - you take cash from people and tell them what they own IS authentic, MIGHT BE authentic or NOT authentic and you get to keep the cash in any case. You also have the authority to issue a blanket LOA that really amounts to nothing but a means to gain income by providing someone with the PSA given right to hose somebody over.

For the Business Majors out there:

PSA/MBA (Might Be Authentic)

While I don't know the accuracy of the opinions, I can see the potential worth of the service to eBayers. Even if the service is neccesarilly imperfect as the signatures aren't viewed in person, it's got to be nice for a collector to get a quick opinion from PSA/DNA or OnlineAuthenticics for a current eBay auction.

The problem is, you do not know who is actually giving a quick opinion on the item. Is it Jimmy Spence or somebody whom PSA plucked out of a hotel lobby?
