Default Real Cap Anson Photo??

Posted By: Josh Siegel

Here is a Cap Anson photo on eBay from 1914;

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300185311375&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fse arch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm37%26satitle%3D 300185311375%26fvi%3D1

Shouldn't this be going for a lot more than it is? I know it isn't a photo of his playing days, but I was suprised that this wasn't going much higher?

There probably are not to many out there!

Any input?

-Josh

Not in uniform and well past his playing days. Condition is pretty bad as well and it has a reserve set on it with two days left to go. It's actually higher right now than I would have guessed it would have sold for. Not long ago there was a group of similar Anson photos that all went very cheap.

Hindsight shows us that things can be undervalued. If you think something
is undervalued, you might be right.

At this point in time, the current price doesn't mean that much. Anyone serious about this item will likely bid (snipe) with a few seconds remaining.

Also... this seller NEVER lets his items go for below market value. He places reserves that do not allow him to lose money. I've watched him for years, and know this for a fact. This Anson piece will either make the seller's reserve (that is lots higher than the current bid), or it simply will not sell. Nothing inbetween...

Leon... if you are reading...

Shouldn't this, the Topps Poster, and Autograph Threads (just to name a few recent ones) be posted on the Memorabilia side?

Seems like the "Card" side gets 80% of the posts, including a lot of memorabilia-related topics. Perhaps it doesn't matter... just hate to see that side of the board getting less than its share of attention. Thanks!

I agree Mark.

Leon and Brian put in a lot of work to set up the different sections and expand the forum, and I think it is courteous to post things in the proper category.

I agree....The way Net54 VBCF is set up there is really no excuse for not using the different forums for different items. If you can't read that top of our forum, and understand where things go, I am not sure you should be posting. With Brian's help we will try to do a better job of this. That being said....how should these threads be dealt with? Should we lock them and put a polite post directing these threads to the correct category? Will that piss people off? We want to try to do the right thing while still being friendly....thoughts?

Leon- are you able to manually move them to the proper category? If so, you should just do it. I can't imagine anyone would be upset.

Well, that's a great question...

I am still somewhat new to the Forum (going on 5 months), and can't even begin to express how much I appreciate this thing. So you would know far better than me, how people would react to a locked thread. I personally, don't see the harm...

If you locked the "misplaced" thread, and posted a friendly reminder to post in the correct venue, I think people would view it as helpful rather than annoying. I know it would not deter me from re-posting in the correct place.

There is slight potential overlap (for example, autographed cards), which would fit within either the "cards" or "memorabilia" sections. It would simply be your call, which threads to lock... most cases would be pretty obvious.

Just my opinions... perhaps others will chime in with a different viewpoint. I know you won't want to alienate your "customer base". Either way- thanks for your consideration!

Hi Leon,

While we're making site suggestions, I think an even bigger issue is the large URL's and scans that cause the page to widen beyond the monitor screen. I wonder if there is a way to have the system automatically compensate for that? It really makes the long (and sometimes, interesting) threads a real headache to peruse. Frankly, sometimes I just give up. Put the geek-squad on it! Love all the new innovations, otherwise.

Thanks, Ken

First of all I definitely don't feel like the members of this forum are customers as much as they are friends. If anything I guess the advertisers would be...and I consider them friends more than customers too. For those that have been to a Network54 Dinner at one of the last 5 National Conventions I think you will agree. It's a pretty friendly environment. If you haven't been to one I hope you can make the one coming up at the National this year. They really are a lot of fun. I haven't started making arrangements yet, due to a few ongoing things, but I am sure it will be fun again.

There is no way to automatically move a thread from one place to another. Brian or I can copy and paste the whole thread though....pictures and all. That is what I was speaking of when I said something about moving them. I would hope the original posters would do that when they see they have accidentally put their thread in the wrong place and been locked. Locked threads stand out like a sore thumb so it's not like it won't be noticed. There is a fine line in what "is" off topic and what is "not" off topic. Sort of a judgment call but not really too difficult.

As for URL's and pictures being too large and then making the thread have to be scrolled back and forth from left to right....there is not an automatic thing that will keep that from happening. I know on the long PSA half grade thread that it got that way and then I resized one scan and it went back to normal...which is waaaaayyyy better than having to scroll. Brian and I are always open to suggestions about improving the site. It's been a work in progress for 6 yrs and one a little closer to home since we started moderating it. best regards

So what we really need is one more category up at the top, for graded items and grading companies.

Then we'd have something!

With all due respect I hope the grading folks and raw folks can play happily together. As I have stated many, many times....I am not really a slabbed guy but do have my most valuable ones done by SGC. Still, probably half of my collection is in the nude. I like fondling them...and every now and then sneak a smell of them.. ....but don't tell anyone. I don't think there is any better way to get to know cards, and their characteristics, than by handling them... best regards

Concerning the Anson photo, there were a number of post-retirement studio photos of Cap Anson that entered the hobby from his family. According to the family, the photos belonged to Cap. One is pictured in the Barry Halper catalog. I don't know, but it's possible this photo is one of them. There are others that I can identify as coming from the Anson family.

Sorry to have hit a bug with some. There is much more of a response in here than the memorabilia. I promise I won't do it again!!! At least until Monday...

I think Tinyurl should be linked to the top of each page that way people can edit down their long URL's before posting them. Otherwise like I said Leon just give me the power to moderate and I swear the only thing I will do is make sure all URL's get posted correctly. I hate to continue to complain about that one thing, but like someone up top said it's so annoying to me that I just give up on threads where I have to scroll left to right.

I'm with Dan. Typically the most interesting and longest threads are too wide because of one errant photo, and it is torture to try and read.

I'm with Dan too, in one direction....

I like scrolling down.

I detest scrolling left to right.

Folks have to figure out this URL stuff.
