Default Pop-Up Ads---A solution

Posted By: Elliot

Network54 has added pop-up ads effective last weekend. They are only supposed to come up once an hour but seem to be coming up on every click for some people. They are working on getting the software fixed. One solution is to upgrade this forum to make it totally ad free, but I have never felt that it was worth the cost (please let me know if you feel otherwise). Another solution is that an individual user could upgrade so that he/she will get ad free forums for any that they visit (again I have not felt that this is worth the cost.

What I feel is the best solution to the pop-up ads is detailed below:

Network54 can't recommend this without their advertisers getting upset.

I'm not Network54.

You can keep using Network54, with all of its services, and avoid pop-ups. In fact, you can avoid pop-ups all over the internet, for free.

I'm also not a salesman for the following product, which would be quite useless since the product is free anyway.

But if you use IE, or Netscape 4.x, the pop-up stopper program at the link below will detect when a new IE or Netscape window opens, and will close it immediately without any effort.

What that means is that when you click on a Network54 post (or any internet link that results in a pop-up), the pop-up window will open for a split second (thus fulfilling Network54's contract to the pop-up advertiser) and then the pop-up stopper will close the window automatically, regardless, no matter what.

If you actually want a new window to open when you click a link, just hold down a shift or control key when you click on the link and it will allow subsequent windows to open as long as you hold the key down.

How easy is that? It lets Network54 get credit from their pop-up advertisers, and it lets you eliminate all pop-up advertising from your internet surfing.

Here's the link:

Those of you who are having problems with the pop-up ads please let me know how this solution is working.

Elliot

Just loaded it to see if it will work with NS 6.x and it was a no go. I detest IE, but I guess I will have to dust it off and make this site the lone bookmark, lol

Similar functionality - kills pop-up ads, banner ads, background music (aka, "Mike Wheat disease"), unwanted cookies, etc. You can selectively allow these things on a site-by-site basis.

Note to Jay from a software type: don't fight Microsoft.

Leon - Mike Wheat disease and Kit Young syndrome have two glaring similarities, namely, enlarged openings of bid prices and chronic overgrading. Wheat disease also promotes a tendency to weepiness that can be effectively counteracted by turning off your speakers.

Fritchitis is a topic for another day.

Gotta love Wheat's song though, the theme from Ken Burns' Civil War series on PBS.
