Default What's with all the pop ups?

Posted By: jay behrens

I understand the need for them, but why are the unable to make it show up in the same window all the time. I am about ready to give up reading the board because I have clear out a million pop ups after I am done.

Jay

I don't get any pop ups here. Often times pop ups are the result of the place you were previously at. For example, some news organizations give you pop ups when you leave the site, as a last ditch reminder.

Is anybody else getting pop-ups, or is Jay just being "leoned". I don't ever recall getting pop-ups on this site. I only get the Network54 ad occasionally that tries to sell the premium service before I get to the message board.

I get them too. Sometimes I have to shut off my computer (the cursor often disappears) improperly to get rid of them. I can't remember where "CASINO!!!" first popped up--in may have been here. They're very intrusive, and I don't see why anyone should be subjected to them. Julie

These pop ups just started showing up a few days ago. Prior to that, nothing. I get one every time I switch threads

On another note, I run a couple of spyware detection programs so either they are something new that they don't pick up or they don't fall under the definition of spyware for these programs

Maybe Mike sent it to the King of the Dunderheads, and others got infected?

Just a Thought,

OK Elliot...that was kind of harsh Another "Leonism" I guess......oh well....all is fair in love and card collecting.....I will post a "pop up remover" program later today. It is a program that you install to make the darn things quit, and it works. My inside support guy, who is a computer science major, will help me post it. I will make a new post entitled "POP UP REMOVER".......best regards

Pop-ups - yes, I receive them. Whether a person receives them or not is related mostly to the browser they are using, but most importantly, whether they have "cookies" enabled or disabled, and whether javascript is specified as allowable in your options settings. A "cookie" is a text file that lives on your hard drive. If cookies are enabled, a site you visit has the option to download their address to the file, and upload the current contents. Many companies upload this information and use it to "customize" the ads that pop-up on your screen. It's all about marketing, and it's all very much in the background, basically transparent to you. If you have cookies disabled (a simple check box in your browser option settings) a cookie file can not be created. Ever go back to a site that you had to log in to, but, the second time around they just "recognized you"? That's the cookie file. The site reads your cookie file and determines you have been previously "authenticated". If you simply go in to your file directory (through Windows Explorer in MS OS products) and delete the cookies file (in the directory your web browser is installed in), the information is sent to the recycling bin. You can then empty the recycling bin. Also - most pop-ups are initiated and run as java-script sub-executables. If you "disable" javascript, you essentially sever the ability for the pop-up to be launched. However - you also prevent yourself from receiving some information at other sites that also use javascripting - but for more legitimate purposes. The information in the cookie file is called a "footprint". You can open the file and look at it. All it is is a list of places you have been (not comprehensive. Some sites don't make edits to the file). So - note to all of you "naughty people" - if you visit sexymamas.com - by accident, of course - the address may be sitting there in your cookie file, waiting for somebody else to come along and notice it. Perhaps, not such a good thing? Yes - I am a Network manager in my "real" job. ; )

James, I get pop-ups from time to time, but have never gotten them on this site, why is that?

I've talked to a few other people who are not getting them on this site. Is anybody else having the problem here?

Just in the past week or so, Elliot, I seem to be getting them on this site. Not sure why the sudden change.
