Default PSA Grading of T3s Irregualrity ????

Posted By: Carl Lamendola

I have been collecting the T9s and was searching the population report and realized something that I was thought was quite odd. PSA has graded almost 1500 T3 Baseball and Boxers. My observation is quite simple, there are only
two cards which have reached the lofty level of PSA 8. Don't you think its quite a coincidence they are of both the most expensive card in the set Ty Cobb. Thoughts?

Default PSA Grading of T3s Irregualrity ????

The 2nd Cobb to grade an 8 came after PSA has graded 727 total cards. Now they are at 1496 and they are still at just 2 PSA-8's. It is indeed odd that no other T3 or T9 has reached an 8, thats 125 other cards. But both of the Ty Cobb 8's are 8 worthy, and the last one sold via na Mastro auction and fetched $90+K. The scan showed how flawless the card is. The other I saw first hand at the National in Cleveland. It looked perfect. If either were overgraded, there would have been someone to complain about it.and I've yet to hear a word about that.
There has also been speculation that 1 of the PSA-8 Cobb's was initially in a GAI-9 holder, but I can't confirm that.
Also out of all 126 subjects, Cobb has the most graded w/ 28 total cards.
It is indeed a coincidence. PSA has graded 18 PSA-7's and none are Cobb's...jay

Definitely a tough set to get high grades because of the corners. I have seen some nice T3's, great color, nice picture, but sharp corners are hard to find. How do they grade the proofs of this set. Authentic or a number grade?

my opinion on the cobb 8's is that cobb was the most respected in the set and it would be reasonable to assume that cobb may have been the most frequently ordered.
the two cobbs in question may have gotten "preferential" treatment in storage.....i picture someone letting their kids and grandkids play with the others....but do not touch the cobb.....that one you can only look at.

regarding the proofs, psa would have graded mine but i requested authentic only. seemed silly to me to assign a numeric grade to something that is one of a kind.

Andy, unfortunately my Cobb must have been given to the kids, small corner piece missing and tape on 1 side. Which proof do you have, I have the Schmidt, Detroit.

i'm sure plenty were "fiddled" with, but a few may have remained pristine....that's my guess.

regarding the proofs, i have four....pat moran, orval overall, mordecai brown, and harry lord.....and i would be very interested in obtaining more.
