how often do these cards turn up for sale and at what price? ive exhausted web searches looking for one and was wondering if there were auction houses or dealers who might have one for sale.

They are rarely found for sale. Someone once told me that there were fewer than 10 or 20 in existence, though I have no clue if those numbers are correct. The very one you picture above I sold for around $500 a couple of years ago.

It took me nearly 10 years to get one for my personal Zeenut HOFer and notable collection. I had to buy an autographed contract at the Halper auction to get the card!

Along with the unique pose and rarity, the attraction to the card is largely caused by the famously infamous end of Arbuckle's Hollywood acting career and that you can still rent his movies.

David's estimate sounds like what I have heard as well. The Arbuckle card makes completing the 1919 set an incredibly daunting task. I have heard it said that the reason why there are so few of them around is that a good portion of them were destroyed by 'upstanding' citizens after Fatty became embroiled in the sex scandal/murder case involving a young woman during the 1920's.

By the way, I believe David's photo image (avatar?) is actually an elephant emerging through a keyhole during a snowstorm.

I've seen only 2-3 different Zeenut Arbuckles come for auction in the last few years. The one in Halper auction, one in a MastroNet auction (I think) and the one I sold. All were worn but presentable (mine being the worst). So they don't come around often. I'm sure the price I sold mine for is low ball today.

Though it isn't, the avitar looks to me like a toy Russian soldier.

I gave up years ago on ever getting this card.

I picked up an exhibit arbuckle at the national.

What is the reason why he was in the set for Vernon? Did he own a chunk of the team?

Yeah, Arbuckle owned the team. I could have bought one back around 1983 or 1984 for $20, but back then that just seemed plain silly.

I got mine for cheap (I didn't say dirt cheap) as it was part of a larger collection of Arbuckle silent era memorabilia. It included a variety of cool stuff; sheet music, photos, foreign candy cards. If someone unfamiliar with baseball cards looked at the collection, there was no way he would have guessed that the baseball card was by far the most expensive item, as it was the smallest and most beat up in the lot.
