Default Lipset's Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards

Posted By: Scott

Just purchased this book with Volumes 1-3 combined. In the introduction, Lipset states that he was intending to go to 6 volumes. Was wondering if volumes 4-6 (which covered bakery cards, miscellaneous and other category I can't remember) were published.

He did not publish a 4th or subsequent volume. He did have some preliminary work toward future volumes. A few years ago via telephone he indicated that he was done.

And wouldn't it be nice if one day the work is completed, and then updated.

If you like those encyclopedias, see if you can find back issues of The Old Judge. Lew did a bound set of some of the earlier issues, in a book simular to the 3 separate encyclopedias. I don't know if that combined work is the same size as the originals. At any rate, there's some great stuff in those old newsletters.

We all owe a debt of gratitude to Lew. If you read this, Lew, thank you sir.

Frank.

I'm not familiar with Lipset's Encyclopedia. Does it contain photos of all cards from various sets? Topps put out a couple of beautiful oversize books containing photos of every card from all the Bowman and Topps sets from the 50's and 60's. I'd like to find something similar that has all the Goudey, Playball, etc. sets, if any such books exist.

Classic Baseball Cards by Frank Slocum may be more what you are looking for. It's published by Warner Books.

Go to Card Pricer or Vintage Card Prices to see both of those sets, and others, David B.

But buy Lipsett's Encyclopedia if you want to learn about the earlier sets. The book is a tremendous educational piece and a permanent reference.

Edited to add:

Those two sites are free, and you can visit them anytime.

It's worth it to invest in the original volumes, because the photos in the combined volume are alkl zeroxed.

Nothing has been updated--but if all you want is the words---great in themselves---the combined reprint is fine.
