A good collecting friend of mine and I share pieces of our collections with each other once in a while and last night he teased me with the first picture. Wanted me to guess what was in it . I love vintage original packaging and know some of you do as well so I asked him if I could share it.

thanks for sharing that.

I am not that learned with the unopened packs.... should those have cards in them?

If so...
those boxes wouldn't last a week in my house.

I would rip each one open....
of course - with my luck - I would be left with 8 commons - and even though I just opened up the 100 year old box - and was the first person to touch them in that time... SGC would deem them all Authentic due to evidence of trimming.

What a great set of images... And the first one he sent, I would have never guessed. I saw it and thought it a game box.

Any idea about the geographic origins of your friend's find?? Whee and when?

Thanks for posting!

Frank.

The box looks deep...are there more than eight packs there? Gee, you've got to open one up- and if a T206 shows up, open them all. I don't know enough about the tax stamps to recognize if those are ca. 1910.

Hi Keith,
Nice piece, but not from the T206 period. I have never seen that type of carton before, but it's a great way to display the product on the counter.
I have a picture of a 500 pack carton from the 20's that I have posted before, I'll see If I can post it again. Be well Brian

PS Keith, I recently purchased a Piedmont tin that included 100 Cigarettes from the 1909-11 period that I have never see before. Any thoughts? lmk Brian

I'm guessing they sold singles......

Keith,

Although I quit smoking five months ago, I would start again if you would send me a pack of these cigarettes. I would open them and smoke with gusto as I examined the card that hopefully I would find inside. Is it a deal?

Don, Congrads on kicking the habit. It's a tuff road to follow. For me, I can't give up my vices.

People said it was a million dollar wound. But the government must keep that money, cause I ain't never seen a penny of it.

"box top measures approx 9" x 12"
pack measures approx 3" x 4 1/2"
got it at a NH antique coop....I left offers 3-4 weekends.
Finally, the guy accepted. I never could have afforded his
"list" price.
my guess is I got it somewhere around 1990-1995....
think it's a 1902 item, before the t-206
era. but it sure looks nice, doesnt it ?
I wanted to open one pack, but i was told it would be
blasphemous to do such a thing.....it made sense, as all I'd
get is old tobacco
oh, well...the pics are great....the box is nondescript, but the
inside is a real gem."
The stamps do have a 1902 date and therefore it is doubtful if there are any cards in them. The box is meant to hold more packs but only 8 came with the purchase.
Brian, I've seen the picture that great 500 pack carton but never have I seen a Piedmont tin like this one, looks just like a carton. Is it "paper"ed or "litho"ed? Also a very nice companion / display piece.

Hi Keith,
Awesome pickup!! It's amazing that any of these unopened items are still around.

The Piedmont Tin is smaller than a carton and evidently held 100 single cigarettes. I thought it might be a carton when I bought it, but was pleasantly surprised when it arrived. It's from FActory 25 2nd dist of VA and has a Dewitt Clinton 100 cigarettes tax stamp series of 1910 act of aug 5, 1910.
The fact that it has advertising inside the top makes me think it sat on the counter to sell singles, but maybe they sold these to chain smokers or 5 pack a day guys. Too bad they didn't insert something like t200's in these.
Be well Brian

PS I will be looking out for ugly boxes with nice insides......
