bill latzkoOver 20 years ago I bought a case of 1987 Topps from a co-worker; thought it would be cool to set it aside for 20 years since all my 50's had disappeared ,thrown out etc. The following yr. he asked me if I wanted an '88 case. My 1987's were sitting in my office corner just where I put them a year before but this time I thought I'd check out the comic/baseball card store behind our office.(we are in the atlanta,ga area).
I walked out an hour later with a few sets of topps, and all other brands and was told to come back a week later for the '88 Score !!!. A week later when I returned for my Score sets one of the baseball card employees was looking at copies of 900 little cards which he explained to me were early 20th century tobacco cards. They were found in a safe deposit box in Augusta,Ga, owned by the recently deceased Robert Walton Jr. The bank was the executor of the will and was determining the value of the cards. They were to be auctioned by that little baseball card store in a silent auction. Many of the cards--probably 30% had the stamp on them. I was fascinated by the cards, never having seen them since I hadn't collected since the mid-late 50's, and was given an idea(some would say insider information!!) as to what he thought the 2 "whales" in Atlanta would bid. I bid and won. Thus my beginning of my obsession with the monster
HERE IS WHAT IS FASCINATING ABOUT THE STAMP---ROBERT WALTON IS A DIRECT DESCENDENT OF GEORGE WALTON, ONE OF 3 SIGNERS FROM GEORGIA OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE,AND AFTER WHOM WALTON COUNTY IS NAMED!!!!!!!
Lastly, if the person who bought the Magie from me years ago with the stamp on the back reads this, I'm sorry for not following through by putting in writing the provenance of the stamp. Have actually felt guilty about it and lost your name and address.
