Default Poll - U.S. v William R. Clemens - Any predictions? Demoted to the 'pen' or walks?

Here's some of the background information in case some of you have been in coma the past several years.

Default Good poll

Good poll and a bad time for The Rocket. Should be interesting to say the least.

"Not Guilty on Any Counts"?

Isn't this kind of the opposite of a double negative?

Default Sad

I worked at the Toronto stadium hotel that Roger lived in during the two seasons with the Jays and he was great to fans and staff alike. There were never any rumors swirling around about drug use, needles etc at that time.

Went out for drinks with McNamee a couple of times. Strange, but nice guy. He would order 6 beers at once, for himself, drink them slowly but said he didn't like to wait for service. Very frenetic personality.

I don't like the whole sad mess but have to conclude from the story and Roger's performance in the late stages of his career that he was no doubt juicing and tried to cover it up. As a result he will be found guilty but will most prob pay a fine and do community service. His HOF future maybe as "Rose"y as Pete's now.

Sooner or later some juicer has to be inducted.
Can the Hall keep out Bonds, McGwire, Manny, Arod, Ortiz, Clemens etc...
Canseco said a year or so ago there are already steroid users in the Hall Of Fame.

This case smells like spite. A bunch of feds are pissed off because all he had to do was tell the truth the first time and then they even offered to decide this behind closed doors. Roger, however, wants to play this out in a public forum. Getting up there and saying "Andy Mis-remembered" ain't going to cut it. For him to walk, something brutal (not just - He tried to blackmail me) about McNamee is going to have to come out.

If Clemens ends up with more jail time than Casey Anthony, something is wrong with the system, not to mention that Congress should have better things to do than worry about athletes using steroids.

So everyone who's guilty of a lesser crime than murder should walk, simply because Casey Anthony got away with it?

You know, I've vascillated on this issue for quite awhile, and I think the above conclusion is probably correct. Steroids were simply the culture then, and if Kirk Radomski, former Mets clubhouse attendant is to be believed in his book (and he was the central figure in the Mitchell report), hundreds of players were on them. Those with the most talent, best work ethic and dedication soared to the top, just as they would in any other era. The game has only superficially seemed to remain the same across many different eras, when in fact changing conditions often favored one style of play over another. The 'roid guys stats may well not be inflated very much over those players put up during the early days of the lively ball in the '20's, and especially the National League in 1930, when nearly everyone concedes the ball was just as juiced as the players of the'90's and early 2000's. Bill James believes these guys will eventually be looked upon as pioneers, and will be inducted as the best of their era, which I have little residual problems with--it will be accepted that they had an advantage in hitting quite like the early days of the lively ball, when the pitchers' best weapons, the spit, scuffed or dark, dirty ball was taken away from them and they had little opportunity to adjust, at least until the slider came to be widely used in the late '30's.

Anyway, I absolutely believe that Jose Bautista's homers are every bit as legitimate as those that McGwire, Bonds, Sosa and Conseco hit!

Larry

PS: loved to watch Big Mac in his healthy hay-day, '97-2000! That swing did indeed evolve into one short, compact, sweet and lightning quick stroke.

There is at least one steroid user in the HOF already.

Hint: He used to run really fast and refers to himself in the 3rd person.

I'm not saying Rickey didn't - I actually wouldn't be surprised if he did - but do you have a link showing proof or are you just speculating?

the jury sounds "interesting" to say the least:

A jury of 10 women and two men will decide whether ex-baseball star Roger Clemens lied to Congress when he said he never used performance-enhancing drugs.

The jurors who took their seats Tuesday include a woman whose cousin, former outfielder Al Bumbry, was a coach for the Boston Red Sox when Clemens played for the team. Another woman on the jury said she believes Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick was “done wrong” in his criminal conviction in connection with dogfighting.

Four other people were seated as alternate jurors in case any of the 12 can’t serve.

Prosecutors and Clemens’ defense team removed 20 people from the pool of 36 jurors, offering no public explanation for their decisions.

The jury took shape after four days of questioning by U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton and lawyers for both sides. Opening arguments are scheduled for Wednesday.
