Interesting card series, dates show 1946-1947.
Are they the same in both years?

Also, just seeking opinions , would you consider this issue “playing years “ for Bill Dickey? He didn’t play in 1947 but was winding down his HOF career in 1946.

Thanks for the discussion.

The Cuban baseball season went from early winter 46- through early spring 47 so it's for the same season not different years

Fun set. Has the only known regular issue card (so far) of boxing HOFer Holman Williams.

I have always really liked this set. Some affordable yet still very cool and some what difficult to find cards with a mixture of contemporary, retired and Latin stars.

Big fan of the set. Just a cool oddball issue full of stars.

Default A few more

Here are a few of mine. The ungraded Rosenfeld I just picked up a few months ago after several years of looking. For me the toughest card in the set has got to be the Waner. I have never seen it. I would appreciate seeing an picture if anyone has one.

Best regards,

Joe

I had never delved too deeply into Cuban cards before, but this thread inspired me to learn more about the set. I love the variety of the subjects and especially the "Spanglish" bios on the backs of the cards, which I have been having a fun time translating for the past few days. Good timing for this thread too, as it coincided with a PWCC set break. Figured I'd pick up a card to see how I liked it, and apparently that turned into 15 cards. So now I guess I'm collecting the set

Default A Few More Examples

Apologies for any duplication of previously shown cards...but these are difficult to safely extract from page pockets. This is a fun set to work on. I have never before seen the Feller in an above post. Very nice card. These obscure cards make even the worm holes interesting. Does anyone know why the teams from the continent have numbers and the island cards do not ?

Big fan of this set for the other athletes as well. The Joe Louis is one of my favorite cards of his ( I live in Detroit, why would I not collect Joe? )

I have been on the lookout for the wrestlers as they are just fantastic to look at too.

Cannot forget about the album. In the US Jackie had not yet integrated but in Cuba kids were collecting cards where Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Martin Dihigo and Silvio Garcia got pasted in the same page

Thought I would toss this shot in of the only uncut sheet I have ever seen as I find the layout and subject mix interesting. Hakes had this back in 2013.

"18.5x24.5" thin paper sheet has a total of 58 cards. This "Sporting Kings" set is a Cuban caramel company issue. 180 paper picture cards in the set covering various sports but with the primary focus on baseball and boxing. A corresponding album was issued. Each card is about 2-1/8x3-1/8". Card fronts feature bw photos, text backs w/set name and athlete bio. Many key cards are featured on this sheet. Baseball players include: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Joe Dimaggio, Ty Cobb. Boxers include: Jack Johnson, James Jeffries, Jack Dempsey, John Sullivan, James Corbett, Max Schmeling. All of these cards appear numerically random on the sheet and run between numbers 1 and 99. These include - Armando Valdes, Manuel (Chino) Hidalgo, Alberto Matos, Fernando Rodriguez, Humberto Baez, Jose Cendan, Orlando (Tango) Saurez, Francisco Gallardo, Oscar Rodriquez, Octavio Rubert, Orlando Moreno, Antonio Lorenzo, Pedro Dunabeitia, Agustin Del Toro, Rafael Rivas, Hector Arago, Jose Traspuesto, Agustin Delaville, Mario Diaz, Valeriano Fano, Bob Feller and Paul M. Derringer. There are also 20 consecutively numbered cards for Havana Cubans players and these are 103-121. These include - #1 John L. Sullivan, #3 Bob Fitzsimmons, #11 Jack Sharkey, #12 Primo Canera, #7 Jess Willard, #8 Jack Dempsey, #4 James J. Jeffries, #26 Juan Oliva, #13 Max Baer, #53 Armandito Puente Pi, #93 Well Stewart, #97 :El Angel" Maurice Tillet, #6 Jack Johnson, #58 Joe DiMaggio, #20 Billy Conn, #33 Joe Legon, #2 James J. Corbett, #14 James J. Braddock, #36 Kid Chocolate Eligio Sardifias, #19 Johnny Dundee (Joseph Carrora), #21 Holman Williams, #91 Mr. Zoko Godoy, #96 Rose Evans, #99 Helen Wills, #42 Ty Cobb, #46 Dom DiMaggio, #44 Ted Williams, #37 Henry Armstrong, #22 Kid Tunero (Evelio Mustelier), #9 Gene Tunney, #56 Bill Dickey, #41 Babe Ruth, #57 Columbia Lou Gehrig, #49 Richard Sisler, #10 Max Schmeling, #32 Louis Frank Klein. Uneven margin on right and bottom edges where cut from a larger sheet but other two margins are as printed. Moderate all over handling wear w/small margin tears and some scattered lt. creases. Several faint fold lines. Overall sheet remains clean and all images are bold and distinct. Overall VG/Fine. A Cuban card rarity and a wonderful piece to frame. This is the first uncut sheet of its kind that we have ever offered and it is our belief that it could very well be the only one in existence. From the Cesar S. Lopez collection, creator of www.cubanball.com."
