Default $175K Mays Card Stolen

This story was being reported this morning. Might be some cards to keep an eye out for at the National.

$175K Mays baseball card reportedly stolen from actor's home
FOX Sports
JUL 28, 2015 12:18a ET

Rob Schneider has made millions as the funny man in movies, particularly in roles opposite Adam Sandler.

But the former “Saturday Night Live” cast member is in no mood to laugh after his house was reportedly burglarized over the weekend, with thieves making off with jewelry, a Cartier watch and the priciest item of all ... a baseball card worth a reported $175,000.

According to TMZ, while Schneider was away in Montreal and his wife and one of his children were out at dinner in Los Angeles on Friday night, burglars broke the glass of a rear sliding-glass door at their Encino home and entered.

Gossip site Wonder Wall confirmed the report, adding that among the items stolen were his wife Patricia’s diamond engagement ring, a Cartier watch, and a handful of baseball cards. Most notable is a mint condition 1951 Bowman Willie Mays card. The story says the card is valued at $175,000 and cites a “source familiar with the investigation” as saying the card is so rare, “it will be difficult or impossible to fence it.”

Other cards reportedly stolen included Topps Willie Mays cards from 1953 and ’71. But, the story says, Schneider’s “main card collection” is kept separate from the Mays cards and that the burglars did not get away with those.

Default Hopefully $175,000 was the insured value

.

While perhaps not enough to replace everything stolen,
it should have cover some of the cost of a vastly improved
security system and secured home safe.

nope.....but big numbers are nice for insurance claims aren't they......

I actually talked to him about cards after a stand up routine at an IMPROV ..he never mentioned an huge interest in Mays..he was engaged at the time and wasn't married to his current wife so not sure how long ago that was...

he had one of the worst stand up acts I ever saw...the only worse act were the 'Farley Brothers' last year who were a lead act for Spade...

If it's the Farrelly brothers, they at least make good movies. What's Rob Schneider's biggest contribution to cinema, Deuce Bigalow?

Sounds about right. That and the annoying office guy on SNL.

Soooooooo yeah...

If you put the word contribution in "" you pretty much nailed it.

It shouldn't even get an unqualified 8 with that centering. It's worth, IMO, a tiny fraction of 175k.

The PSA 9 card in the earlier post is also the one used on the PSA Card Facts sheet for the '51 Bowman Mays (same cert #)

If the thieves actually know anything about cards, I'm sure they'll just crack out the cards and slowly resubmit them to PSA. Of course, no telling what grade you might get.

These are just allegations of a stolen card, I haven't actually seen the newspaper with that story so it might be fake and is Rob Schneider even on this board to tell us the story? No. Sounds like old news and a bunch of bull to me.

This HAS to be Rob Schneider's greatest contribution:

Deja vu all over again.

More posts like that and the Net54 archive might go poof. Either that or it will be available only to paid subscribers.

Pretty sure that "regular" ole homeowners wont cover baseball cards as I have asked my insurance companies off and on over the years and no one I've talked to provides coverage on cardboard pictures. I realize you CAN purchase specific insurance for anything you want but it doesnt usually come with a standard homeowner policy.

Ex wife rented "Animal". Divorced her the next day and never watched a Rob Schneider movie again.

But him collecting changes the way I feel about him!! Gonna call the ex and apologize. Nah, just kidding. He still sucks as an actor.

Ha! Not quite the same thing, but I broke up with my college girlfriend after she made me go see Matthew Broderick in Inspector Gadget. (The Animal beats Inspector Gadget 30-21 on Rotten Tomatoes.)

Do you guys think a PSA 9 51 Mays would go for 175? Even as hot as that card is I think about 125 would be the max, and could see it going for closer to 100k.

SMR on 51 mays PSA 9 is $175k. In this market high grade hall of fame rookie cards have been going for a lot over SMR too.

Well, the recent Heritage auction had a 1952 Mantle PSA 8 close at $400k and a 1955 Topps Clemente PSA 9 close at $300k.

Compared to those two prices, a 1951 Bowman PSA 9 should easily eclipse $175k

Maybe you guys are right. Crazy how cards that old can still double in value in just a year's time.

Default Mays is OK, I guess

The best 1951 Bowman card by far is this one...

SMR on Clemente PSA 9 rookie is $145K and it sold for $300k Heritage auctions.
SMR on 52 Mantle PSA 8 is $285k and it sold for $400k Goldin auctions.
If 51 Mays PSA 9 rookie were to go to auction, I wouldn't be surprised if it sold for $300k as SMR is $175k.
