Default Rearranged antique baseball cabinet..squeezed in two new pieces

I rearranged my baseball cabinet tonight and squeezed in a pair of two tone c1890 Spalding baseball cleats, and a c1880 striped baseball cap I got last summer...I don’t know if I could get anything more in there!....I had picked up an elevated very heavy metal retail shoe display at a flea market a couple years ago for $15.00....I envisioned antique baseball cleats on it from the time I bought it but I have trepidation at messing with a display that's set...Once you start moving stuff and get it out of allingment it can take forever to put the puzzle back together...finally tonight I got it installed....I probably should have bought all the shoe stands the guy had and given them to friends....It really shows the shoes off well I think...

Apologies if I posted some of these photos previously...The cap I first saw at the National last summer but didn't get them till a couple months later...So it's sort of a National find....it pays to go to the National!

Carlton,

Great shoes and a great shoe stand. Any chance of seeing some wide shots of your displays, to see how your room is set up? (or rooms!)

Default wider shot

Thanks gentlman...here's a wider shot of my baseball corner...I got that black case over twenty years ago out of a thrift store in the Mission district of San Francisco...little beat up but works great as I have limited space...I remember I bought it at night and carrying it out to my beater 65' Olds Cutless...No one mugged me and took it LOL!

Hey Carlton...

Mouth-watering stuff. Seeing those 3 Testi Statues posed that way is making me green with envy. Gosh, those suckers are tough to find

Before you put the camera away.... I, too have a favor to ask. Could you post a clear photo of the inside of the Boater Style Cap? I guess a close-up shot of the front would be good, too. I just picked one up from Corey Leiby, and would love to see a better view of yours (for purposes of comparison).

Hope it's not too much trouble... Thanks so much, and GREAT displays!

Mark

Mark, Thanks for the kind words...So....you're the one that bought Corey's boater hat...I called to buy it and it was sold!...When I was moving mine around last night I was struck by how worn it was though still looks good...How about posting a shot of your boater?

Here's a link to a feature I did on my boater...will those photos do?

Carlton...

I did NOT get the one you saw on Corey's website. I missed out on that one, too. I expressed disappointment, as I always seem to be a day late and a dollar short with his stuff. But apparently he remembered I was looking for one. So he called me a few weeks later, having acquired another example.

Mine appears structurally identical to yours and the one pictured on Corey's site. But it is blue and has an embroidered key on the front. I liked the original example a bit more, but this one is in very nice shape, and displays very well.

I'll attach pics in just a bit, as I am tied up with work emails for the next few minutes... thanks!

OK - attached are photos of the one I got from Corey. Eager to hear Carlton's (and anyone else's) thoughts on this one.

Structurally and shape-wise it is very similar to Carlton's, but the material on mine looks a bit different. Mine seems to be more of a traditional baseball cap material, while Carlton's appears to be more of a velour or crushed velvet. That's what the pics portray to me, anyway...

If anyone can identify what the Key logo represents, that would be a real bonus. I'll send a small token of appreciation to whoever can positively identify what the Key might represent.

Thanks!

Mark, Thanks for posting the photos...wow that is one great condition boater...probably the best condition of any...The inside leather brim is in remarkable shape...It must have been well kept in a trunk..I like the color too...That key is what makes good intrigue...The first straw of hope would be if Corey knew the seller enough to ask if they knew any it's history...Considering the condition it doesn't look like it's been out much...practically looks like it hasn't seen the light of day...What does the tag say?....hopefully not "Gilligan's Island Souvenir Universal Studios"....but seriously that's a serious hat...

There was a Blue Key Honor Society..their logo has the date 1924. But more likely there was a Skull and Keys Fraternity founded in 1892 at University of California Berkeley. There school colors are dark blue and gold....now about that small token of appreciation....How bout that Cy Young tin...yeah that'll work..

Yes I can see the material is like a wool...mine isn't velvet or anything...just plain cloth that looks like it was heavy cloth back in the day but now worn thin cloth...

Photobucket

We all know these hat aren't called boaters for nothing....That is I know they were worn for baseball and rowing...and I believe other sports may have worn them...Mine for instance...it's in my baseball things because baseball players wore them....but there's no way to know for sure if a baseball player wore it...Now if someone had a complete uniform with a matching boater!!!! But boaters are so rare, as a matter of being practical we have to just be happy to get one that looks collegiate...mine has the Victorian monogram, yourn a fraternal key emblem....Now that one Corey had that sold....phew...I think it was Univ of Chicago

Thanks Carlton!

That's some good information. Not sure if either one applies to the Key logo, but the Berkeley connection is a slight possibility. That article and photo you linked is amazing. Interesting to see that Berkely was a goofy kind of place even back in the day. Those are some "interesting" looking characters, and I think I even spotted a few Pot plants growing around their love shack!

Thanks much for the info, and hope to see you in Baltimore this summer?

Absolutely! We are all thankful for Carlton. He is without a doubt the "Go To Guy" for so many aspects of the hobby. Everything from the obscure to the spectacular...

And as if his wealth of knowledge isn't enough, he even supplies us with Pizza at the National
