Anybody have any info on this. I have the chance to snag it but Im not sure if the asking price is reasonable. Its eye appealing to me but not sure If I want to drop $60 on it.

I would hesitate to pay $60 also. It's a relatively common trade card from a set that is denoted by the red border around it. I would say in that condition it is worth about $20-25.

Does anybody know of a trade card catalog, or price guide? I see sometimes that folks like you Barry, have great information about trade cards, but is this just from experience? Any help would be appreciated as I have a large stash of them but would like to know more about these before I try to sell some of them. (Yeah, I know, I should have learned about them before I bought them, but I thought they were cool at the time.)

The card in the original post is an H804-15A Tobin Red Border Postition Series.

A lot of the comic trade cards are ACC cataloged, so there is info about them. In general, the thing is to follow eBay and other auctions and you will usually figure out what is common and what rarely shows up. A number of the sets are as common as wall paper.

The Tobin's lithos featuring adult cartoon pics of HOFers like Anson and O'Keefe are amongst the most sought after and expensive. They're sharp looking too. The Spalding die-cuts are sought after too.

Frank Keetz put out a self published monograph on all the trade card sets. I'm on vacation now so don't have the exact title, and I'm not sure how you get a copy of it. It lists virtually every baseball trade card known by H804 numbers. But I know them well because I used to have a large trade card collection and often would sell them.

Edited to say Frank, not Ed (his son) wrote the book.

A good place to go for books about trade cards is "The Trade Card Place" website at http://www.tradecards.com/books/tradecards.html They also list Frank Keetz's "Baseball Advertising Trade Cards" book and how to order it directly from him. It is a great reference guide and Frank is very knowledgeable and a great person to deal with... hope this helps...

Marty- that's an unusual one and I have two thoughts about it:

I don't think it is anywhere as early as the 1880's, and I don't think it's a traditional trade card. The look is more like 1910-1920, and it's an advertising card of some kind but I'm not sure how it was distributed.

The Tradecard is listed as "Tobin Red Border Position Series H804-15A" in the Keetz book.

I agree with Barry etc. Its about a $25 card.

Also the dark Yellowish color (like yours) is normal on some of these cards, they have a shellac coating on some, Ive owned quit a few like the card above.

PS. the Yankee Boy card Ive never seen before, but I also dont think its from the 1880s era too. It looks more like 1900 to me.
