Default A Word About SGC & Sherry Magie

Posted By: Jeff Kennedy

Some of you might have saw my newly aquired Sherry Magee (Magie) that I posted in one of the latest November pick-up threads. After holding the card in my hand for the first time, I knew that I had aquired a tremendous example. One that was diffenetely worthy of and needed to be graded. Then an alarm started going off in the back of my mind, reminding me of Dan's issue with PSA a couple of years back, involving this very same type of card. Not to bash anybody or any business (to each is own), but I immediately knew that for my Magie, I wanted to go with SGC, 1) for their reputation and 2) for the way the finished product looks (duh?!). But, Did I really want to put this thing back out in the mail and chance it getting lost? On the other hand a 13+ hour drive from my house to SGC wasn't real practical either. So, with alot of hesistation I picked up the phone and contacted SGC customer service, where I was prompted to leave a message for their staff. I left a short message with my contact info and later that day, I was contacted by none other then their customer service manager, Michael Goldberg. Although initially I believe he was doubtful about what I was telling him I had, he proceeded to guide me through the process of how to mail the package out and what service level would be needed for such a card. This card would require their immediate (2 hour) submission and at $100 a card, it is alot more reasonable then PSA's Premium Walk-Thru of $200. Michael requested that after mailing out the card, I contact him with the registered mail number so that they could be awaiting its arrival. I sent the card off the next day and within 3 days, it arrived at SGC. Just like he had said, I was speaking with Michael first thing in the morning, letting me know that the card had made it there and that I would be hearing from him in the early afternoon. A couple of hours later, I spoke with him on the phone where he gave me the great news of the final grade and commended me on the specimen that I had sent in to them. Out of the 22 Magie errors graded by SGC, mine was the 3rd finest example. He even went on to tell me that with cards of this caliber, the owner of the company actually looks the final product over and gives his final approval. It is safe to say that this particular example was probably gandered at by just about every set of eyes in the building that day and is for sure worthy of it's final grade. I am ecstatic about it all and will continue to send my high dollar pickups to them and only them for the way that this transaction was handled. Thanks Mike and SGC, a great outfit. Without further adieu, I present to you, Mr. Magie...

Jeff,

Great card. I dont recall if you mentioned it before, but is there any story behind how you acquired this card? Was it a find, purchased from another collector, etc.?

Jeff - nice pickup - I never thought to ask him if he had a Magie!! That find is as good as finding it in Grandpa's Attic.

That is a nice card! I chose PSA at the time because their T206 cards were bringing much more money because of the registry collectors and I sent in 25 others with the Magie. Since I already had a submission ready to go at that time, PSA got the nod as I just needed the card back to sell to Alan Sassoon graded. Well, the rest is a well know hobby tragedy that I was at the wrong end of, imagine that.

When I scored the 675+ collection of T206s from Fells Point that was loaded with gem South Leaguers, well I had a friend drive that entire collection up to SGC and pick it up when they were finished. Dan

Jeff,
that card is indeed a beaut!
Congrats!
I have had a few conversations with Michael Goldberg and have always found him to be most helpful and top drawer in all ways.

all the best,
barry
