Default Most Affordable Babe Ruth Cards??

Posted By: James Feagin

For $500-600, what would be the best original Ruth card (from his playing days) available in a low mid-grade? The 1935 Goudey is a top contender. I'm also looking for strip or even foreign issues. If you could post some of your Ruth strip cards and what they usually sell for, I would be much obliged.

James

Exhibit cards or things like Kashin are your best bets.

The 1926 Spalding Co. of America is a scarce issue at an affordable price.

I have always liked the pose in the Sanella card and they can be had for $200 in PSA 5/6 condition.

Edited to correct typos unless otherwise noted.

Check Clean Sweep Auctions' online store---there were a couple of Ruth strip cards available in your price range.

A vintage Ruth card is a great addition to any collection.

Talk to Kyle. He posted this thread in here recently. Obviously he's trying to sell this card. Maybe you could both get what you want.

$500-$600 is a little low for the PSA 8 Ruth I have. An SGC 84 sold for $750ish a few weeks back. I still like the Sanella's as well. There is a great German seller on eBay who has a handful of these cards. Few years ago, I was able to get two PSA 8's for $500. If you want his email address, let me know and I'll pass you his info. He accepts Paypal and ships well packaged and secure.

I realize you'd be looking for more than the $500-600 range, but for a little more he could get a Ruth in near mint condition.

Thanks Zach... if there was a rude tone in my post, it was extremely unintended.

Doesn't a PSA 1 Goudey sell for $500-$600?

The Kashin's are nice: not as big as the Exhibits, which are also nice. I own a Kashin Publications Ruth. Another Ruth in that price range is the w517. I also have one of those (in blue). They come in lots of colors. Nice hefty cards. Just a bit bigger than the Goudeys, but not as big as the Kashin.

But you should check out the early '20s Exhibit Ruth - I think it is 1921. A real youthful Ruth. You may be able to pick that up in your price range, if grade is not an issue.

If you don't mind oversized cards, r309s are very common and very affordable. I paid $50 for mine

I bought a 1928 George Ruth Candy card off ebay in GAI 5 a couple of months ago for around $250.

The 1932 German Senellas are probably the cheapest. I sold a PSA7 one for under $200. It's a nice looking card too.

The 1921 Ruth Exhibit has priced quite strong of late and doesn't pop up too often anymore. You can expect it would be very low grade for less than $500. If condition is not an issue the card shows Ruth in a great fieding pose and would be a great choice.

Here's a scan of mine.

Edited to note: Not for Sale

Ruth 1932 Sanella ungrade many times under $150
Ruth strips from W512, W515, W516, W551, W560 common but can be had for under $250
Ruth 1926 W511 very rare, there is a decent looking red one in the "buy it now" store under $400, Ive only seen 2 red ones, (see another below) (sometimes called 1924 W-Unc.)
Ruth 1931 W517 nice examples for under $400 sometime
Ruth 1928 Geo Ruth Candy Co. watch out for fakes though, under $350
Ruth Exhibits 1921, 1927, 1928 many sell in the $500-$600 range
Ruth 1929 R316 Kashin $400-$600 sometimes
Ruth 1928 R315 scarcer but not too pricey

1926 W511, 1928 Geo Ruth Candy Co. #6

The Babe Ruth candy cards are a very cool issue and pretty inexpensive. Cards 1, 2, and 4 picture Ruth while acting in the movie called Babe Comes Home. Cards 3 and 6 feature Ruth in 1924 while playing post-season exhibit games in California. Card number 5 i'm not sure, I can't remember the picture on it. One of the cards feature Ruth and a young woman who is Anna Nillson, an actress in the film Babe Comes Home. Cool issue with a lot of neat history behind the cards.

Cards are nice but most are probably overpriced during the current vintage card boom.

You might want to keep your eyes open for memorabilia as well. I think the "Babe Ruth Underwear" box is a really neat item and can be found in wonderful condition in your price range and it is a super display item. Other neat items are notebook covers, postcards and magazine covers with many of these being produced during his playing days

Sometimes it pays to look outside the box to get the most bang for your buck.

But if your heart is set on a card, I'd probably go with a 33 Goudey even if it has to be one in low grade condition. Just keep an eye out for one downgraded due to a crappy back. Who looks at the back any way? Be patient and only get one graded by SGC, PSA or GAI.

Good Luck
