Default Similar T205 and T80 artwork....let's see your cards ?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis

In 1911 American Lithographic (ALC) started producing their Gold Border sets. A Military series
of 50 cards (T80) and a BaseBall series of 210 cards.

Shown here for comparison are 2 Subjects of the the T80 set and a T205 Minor Leaguer card.
I'd venture to say the same artist created these designs, embellishing the Military men with a
higher quality of artwork than the BB guys.

I have a feeling that we can attribute the short-printing of T206 cards with LENOX and UZIT
backs in early 1911 to ALC printing their new T80 cards with LENOX & UZIT backs. The T80's
can also be found with OLD MILL and TOLSTOI backs.

I sold my T205 set 10 years ago; but, I kept the 12 Minor Leaguers as I thought their design
was really "cool". Here is the checklist of these 12 cards......

Doc Adkins (Baltimore)
Henry Batch (Rochester)
Forrest Cady (Newark)
Jimmy Collins (Providence)
John Dunn (Baltimore)
James Frick (Newark)
Charles Hanford (Jersey City)
Wyatt Lee (Newark)
Lewis McAllister (Newark)
George Merritt (Buffalo)
John Nee (Newark)
James Phelan (Providence)

Excellent artwork and a neat little T205 sub-set to collect....Show & Tell of your T205 Minor's ?

Throw in some scans of your T80's, too.....just for fun.

Thanks to Jim Rivera for my T80 cards.

Wow! Ted what great colorful T80 cards. I may have just found a new non-sport set to collect. Don't know much about them... Are they hard to find? Thanks for sharing. The T205 Minor League subset is a great group to collect.

These are the only two T80's that I have. I'm going to search for more....but, with the
OLD MILL or TOLSTOI backs.

Perhaps, some one on this forum is more familiar with them and will chime in, as to their
availability.

I have been collecting T80's for almost 7 years now and here is my experience with them.

Old Mill & Cairo Monopol - Toughest
Uzit - second toughest
Lenox - 3rd
Tolstoi - easiest

I have always heard about a blank back but I have never seen one.

I have several duplicates if anyone is interested.

These letters were auctioned through Mastronet back on Apr. 11th, 2002 - basically notifying the recipient that American Tobacco was discontinuing the production of Tolstoi and Uzit T206's, and beginning to insert a "Military series". Interesting that the letters mention simultaneous insertion of both a baseball and military picture in each package of cigarettes (until the baseball series ran out I assume). Any idea what the final price was for these pieces? - I couldn't find anything through the Mastro back door.

PS - apologies for using an antiquated scanner...

Some fine research, guy. Thanks for posting. The T80's are mostly found with the TOLSTOI backs.
The T80's with LENOX and UZIT are the not as tough to find as the T206's are.

The dates on these ATC letters confirm my previously stated timeline on the T206 LENOX & UZIT
issues.

Thanks again for a great post.

Thanks Ted - there's another misc. lot in the catalog with a piece from ATC mentioning that American Beauty T206's began being packed on June 14th, 1910, and started shipping on July 3rd, 1910.

pretty sure at one time had your Uzit Highlander.

I remember bidding on the Mastro letters, but can't recall how much they went for.
regret I didnt bid higher!

took a few years for me to build my T80 set (50 cards), a fun set to collect!

have a scan of the rare Cairo Monopol ad back on my website.

Thanks for posting....I always enjoy checking out your website.

The Cairo Monopol, Lenox, Tolstoi and Uzit brands are all Factory 30 (NY), while the Old Mill
is Factory 25 (VA). I think that tells us why the Old Mill T80's are so rare.... because by the
Spring of 1911, ATC's Cigarette production had been transferred from Richmond (Factory 25)
to Durham, NC (Factory 42).
