Default Pronunciation of Lajoie..?

Posted By: E, Daniel

Talking to a fellow hobbyist the other night, I realized one of us wasn't even in the ball park.

He twanged "LA - JO (the J sound given a french sounding Je, as in Je m'appelle) - WAY".

I've always gone for a "LA - HO - EE".

Can anyone set me on the straight and narrow as to be prepared for future discussions with other collectors?

Thanks
Daniel

what words did you use for your search?

I often look for things with the search... and am sure that my strategy or word usage is poor - and the result is not nearly as great as your link.

After seeing your response, I tried doing a search on the topic and still have not gotten to your linked thread.

any search tips would be appreciated.

Laj Wah

Edit to say the "j" is soft, kind of like Za in Zaza Gabor. This is the French Canadian pronunciation.

Lazjoway. Not Lajoie.

Eevers, Not evers.

Joe: Make sure you search using the "match" option instead of "date" and your search will be a lot more fruitful.

Reading that his parents were french canadian, I was wondering....
Looking at his countenance and physical features, coupled with the name, I'd always assumed his heritage to perhaps have been Native American - hence my pronounciatioin of "La-ho-ee". Anyone know anything further about his parentage, and if they were originally European or from the North American continent?

Having taken some French at school (), it also does not seem to be a natural pronounciation of the name...indeed I'm not sure I've heard a J pronounced anything other than the Je sound I initally mentioned. The name to me would be said reasonable phonetically if spoken with a French intonation..?

Lajoie's parents were French Canadian who moved to the States to work in the mills.

I've always thought Lajoie was pronounced "LAH-zho-way".

Cicotte, I've pronounced "Chic-KOTE-ee"

Goudey is prounounced "GOW-dee", although there are some that pronounce it "GOO-dee".

If Eddie Ciccotte is Italian it would make sense that the first (single) C would make a "ch" sound, since it's followed by a vowel. And the double c would make a "k" (or if from south Italy, it could be interpreted a little duller, almost a "g" - Imagine the Soprano's pronunciation of cappicola - Sounds like Tony says GabbaGoul - Phoenoms are not possible as I have a standard keyboard, and when we Americanize words, we ruin the actual pronunciation of things, like pure (non-diphthong) vowels... which we don't HAVE in this country (especially if you live in the south, lol)

My Vote is for Chi-goat (rhymes with Tea-coat) - no need for the final "e" sound - Italian has silent letters which we overlook in our attempt to americanize everything

and while I like the "Laj Wah" (and agree with the pronunciation), I ALWAYS called him La-Joe, it doesn't matter too much, and you're always going to find someone willing to argue with you over these things.

Kinda' a trip down net54 memory lane. I think the 2003 link was one of the first "long treads" I read as a new comer. Quite tame by today's interactions .....

My theory is you can pronounce it any way you want, as did they did back then, and now.

I used to work with a great guy who's last name was Cierko. He pronounced it "Cy-er-ko." So everyone at work pronounced it that way. Every once in a while you'd have someone call for him and ask for Mr. "Ser-ko." Well, you would politely correct the pronunciation to the caller, and forward the call. One day I get a call for Mr. Ser-ko, and I let the caller know it's pronounced Cy-er-ko, and the caller responds: "This is his brother, and it's pronounced Ser-ko !!!!!"

Conversely, I knew an elderly brother and sister who pronounced their last name the same, but spelled it differently (Apostolaris vs. Apostolares) ...

Thanks for listening, I've been waiting almost 4 years to post this thought (or lack there of) ....

Oh, and by the way ...
Gross -- long O -- good
Gross -- rhymes with Cross -- bad

Lajoie was pronounced "LAH-zho-way".
I have hear Cicotte pronounced as "SEE-cot" and "See-COT-e"
I have heard the second pronunciation more often.
Evers is "EE-vers" not "Evers".

I read Cobb's biography by Al Stump. He lived with Cobb during his last days, interviewed him and told Cobb's story. According to Cobb himself, the pronunciation of "Lajoie" is Laz-jo-way (soft z and j). I've got the book in front of me, will find exact page reference this weekend.

My last name is Barbee. Have been called "Barbie" (like the doll) several million times........Its Bar-Bee, just as it appears. Even had people ask me how to pronounce my first name; Daryle. They will say Dary-lee. Ever heard of Daryle Lamonica? Thats who I'm named after (Len is my middle name.....Len Dawson; does it show that my dad was and still is a big football fan? He wanted to name me Namath but moms said and I quote....."NOPE!") Its Daryle; Darrell; Darryl.......ever how you wanna spell it...

Honus Wagner's name is often mispronounced. Some people mistakenly pronounce "Honus" like the word "bonus." The "o" is actually pronounced like the "o" in the name "Don" or "Ron."

being of italian decent, i agree with AL and others, that cicotte is technically pronounced: "Chic-KOTE-ee"...i admit, however, i am guilty of pronouncing it "Cee-Cot", out of laziness...

as for lajoie...i also am guilty of using the quick pronunciation "La-Joy"...but i think it is really: "Lau-Ju-We"

how about simply: Eddie & Nap?

Here's a cool site that converts text into speech, in about 10 different languages

Kate from the U.S does quite well with Goudey and Lajoie.

Frau Blucher! (horse whinney in background) hahaha. My extended family has a "Young Frankenstein" party every few years - bring snacks and drinks and everyone from Grandma and Grandpa (my parents) to the youngest nieces and nephews sit down and watch the whole movie - all 23 of us. Several of us know it almost by heart.

I pronounce it Lazh' - o - way. I thought that's how it was supposed to be pronounced, but not sure why I think that.

I also say GOO - dee, but every time I hear someone else say it they say "GOW -dee". Makes me feel kind of dumb, but I have GOOdee burned into the brain and haven't been able to change how I say it.

And I think "Kline" is pretty straightforward, pronunciation-wise.

Joann

ofen a name(like lajoie) is pronounced differently by members of the same family. "lajoie was purported to prefer lah-zhwa,most said laj-way" this is from the 1988 SABR pub. by J.M.Murphy that deals solely on nap lajoie. thats why he got the nickname larry because thats as close a team-mate at that time (1896)could come to either pronunciation.

Dennis is absolutely correct. One of my grandfather's friends grew up in the same town and had stories of him coming back to town during the offseason and how it was like a parade for him every year. My grandfather's friend pronounced it "Lay-zwah".

I opined as to how to pronounce Lajoie in another thread...

To learn the correct pronunciation, go buy the 4 cd set of The Glory of Their Times. On the 3rd cd, track 1, is Larry Ritter talking with Smokey Joe Wood. Wood played with Lajoie. First Ritter, and then Wood, both pronounce it the same way... which is the way I suggested in that other thread.

I really think these guys had it right. Listening to that cd is a great experience, well worth the cost of the cds. I recommend buying an unslabbed set of the cds so that you can actually enjoy them.

I'm gradually making my way through the 4 CDs...

Jimmy Austin's segment has him pronouncing Lajoie. And it is said the same as in my previous post.

Woods pronounced Cicotte as a two syllable name. SY-cot.

Everyone who's curious about how to say the names, and who these guys were, needs to get the 4 CD set of The Glory of Their Times.

Finished playing through the CDs. Bill Wambsganss articulates "Lajoie" in his short section, which is on CD 4. He says it the same way as Wood and Austin.

So again, get the CD set... it is great!
