Will have to decide between the two at some point I suppose. Oy....will post pics when they arrive.

Ha! You bought the 5.5 from me over eBay. It’s a nice card and I hope you like it. Centering not as strong as the bvg 5, but it’s a great card. I had it listed on here as well for less, but alas...

LOL cool I wondered if I had perhaps gotten it from a Net54 person. It’s a very sharp card as well, slightly better corners, but the BVG one you are correct has better centering.

This card goes a long way in helping me complete a low grade PSA 1950's Willie Mays Run:

Very nice 4. Love the simple design of the 57s and that’s my personal favorite of his.

Default January Pickups

LCS pickup...which I find it hard to believe I’m saying that, as I’m the guy who has lamented the fact that all my LCS’s are gone, up until...well, just a few days ago. Turns out the little shop up the road almost literally right under my nose - it’s less than 2 miles from my house - which bills itself as a sports memorabilia store is now actually a functional card shop, with a nice owner AND a decent selection of vintage at good prices. Who knew? I had been in the place maybe once 7 years ago and remember them having a lot of team apparel and newer wax, but not old cards.

Very happy with this find - and subsequent haul - to say the least!

Good stuff, John! I would be broke and perhaps divorced if I had a shop with decent vintage less than two miles from my house! Congrats!

This was technically a December pick up, but since I had it in my possession a total of 15 minutes in that month, we'll call it a January pickup instead as it just came back from SGC.

Peter what a nice photo. I was assigned to cover Dodger Stadium in the 70's but never found out why Jerry Doggett was so suddenly replaced. He was there one day and gone the next.

Default January Pickups

Big one for me today. This completes my 1948-1955 Bowman run.

Topps is complete as well, except for 52 highs (probably never gonna happen)

I have expanded to variations, and less popular sets now. Excited to see where this new adventure will take me.

More recent LCS pickups. The Schmidt is really nice, probably a 7 and perhaps more if the centering was better. The Fisk is probably a 5.

Has anyone else noticed the Tapatalk flaw (at least on iOS) where you can only upload one pic per post at a time?

Sorry for the large scan (taken directly from the eBay listing), but the card is so gorgeous it's deserving of a little extra showcasing.

Very nice Jackie, and especially for a 3. Mine was a BVG 4.5, better centered - but yours has nicer corners.

eBay mail day. I’ve always loved the green-blue color pop on this card. This one is especially bold:

Really tough regional issue. The 1974 Syracuse Chiefs inserted 30 different 4" x 5" cards in their scorecards (1 at a time) making the set very difficult to find. Some of the cards I have seen have staple holes or are trimmed at top (some may have been stapled inside). The player selection was somewhat strange, most players are pictured in Yankee uniforms and it also features some all-time Yankee greats (Ruth, Mantle, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Munson, etc.,etc.). In fact the only player that is pictured as a member of the chiefs is the Ultra-RARE Frazier card.

SIDE NOTE: There was one card in the 1974 Syracuse Chiefs set that they made only 6 or so copies of (Fred Frazier) that entitled the lucky person to a free bicycle (at least that I have read in hobby publications back in the day). I actually own one of these Fred Frazier cards, possibly only a few survived? It is on thicker stock and has his name kinda type written on front and has some initials on back in pen (likely as a form of cancellation).

Anyways, I found some extra Mickey Mantle cards recently that are from this set (in a small grouping of other cards from the set), one with the staple holes I mentioned and another without.

One of the tougher Mickey Mantle regional issues from the 1970-1979 era...
