Default Help needed - M114 photo of Lou Navikoff

Just published an article to the SABR blog but a loose end requires tracking down an image of the 1942 Baseball Magazine poster (M114) of Lou Navikoff.

Please post pic if you have one.

Full article is here: https://sabrbaseballcards.blog/2019/...ery-79-solved/

Doug Goodman has almost all M114s. He’d be your guy! I’ll send him a quick PM in case he doesn’t usually venture over to the post-war section.

I just stumbled on his amazing flickr image archive thanks to your tip. Yes, he definitely had a Novikoff along with 900+ more M113/M114 posters. Probably the coolest collection I've ever seen online.

I appreciate the kind words guys.

I just checked my scans to see if I had any of the missing matches that I hadn't posted to my flickr site, and came up empty. Sorry about that.

Because of the nature of the "catalog" for the m114 (and m113) sets, my initial thought when reading Jason's great detective work in his very cool article is "well, looks like there might be pose variations that I'm missing in my m114 set for Dickey, Hack, Henrich, Novikoff & Reese".

I was really tempted to use the word "must" instead of "might".

Also, in regards to the Mize, his seems to be the only picture that is close, but doesn't exactly match, and I have attached his "other" m114, which also doesn't match, so maybe there is a third pose of him in the m114 set?

The search continues...

Doug

PS - I'm currently at 1036 different m113 & m114 issues, with 2 news ones waiting in my mail when I get home and verify them. Always looking for more...

PPS - which reminds me, does anybody know ebay seller collectibles_1?

Doug,

Yes, the thought crossed my mind for a bit that there could be uncatalogued pose variations. However, I'm thinking probably not, largely because it would be super weird to bother with multiple Lou Novikoff posters when he only made his debut in 1941 and remained with the same team past the point of the MP&Co set.

For a player like Dickey it certainly wouldn't be shocking for BB Mag to have issued multiple poses over the years. However, he is also a popular enough player that I assume these would be known to the hobby. The fact that he remained with one team his whole career also takes away what looks to be the primary reason for photo variations within the set.

My SABR membership gives me full access to the Sporting News during the period of interest. When I can find the spare time I may start flipping through the pages from about 1940-1942 and see if I can find any of the "missing" photos.

Mainly though, I just have to say WOW again for your amazing collection and the work you went to in posting it. You probably know it is damn near impossible to find even a single pic of some (most?) of these posters apart from your site.

Jason

There are many things about the m114 set that qualify as "super weird" and multiple Novikoff poses wouldn't be any weirder than Frank McCormick having six different printings including two poses (although the poses were with different teams).

Doug
