Default REVISITED 30s Goldsmith / Spalding catalogs Scans Added

Posted By: Shawn Chambers

Hi guys,

Sorry I don't have scans, but a friend of mine is downsizing his collection of magazines, etc. He has a 1937 Goldsmith sporting goods catalog and a 1939 Spalding sporting goods catalog which I really like (especially the Goldsmith). He has been very good to me through the years and I want to pay him a fair price, but have no idea about value. The Goldsmith in particular is in beautiful shape and chock full of glove pics.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hope this is enough info for a ballpark (pun intended!) range. He also has a few teens publications that I will probably be asking for help on as well.

Thanks in advance,

Shawn

Prices for these range all over the map. While a particular catalog may be difficult to find, there are many of the type offered on ebay. Without a scan, it's difficult to say what they might sell for. Things such as a famous player or color photos clearly enhance the value.

Max,

Thanks for the reponse.

The Goldsmith seemed to be black and white.

The Spalding has three athletes on the cover (one is Babe Ruth) and he is also featured on a full page pic inside. Of course, it's not all baseball.

I will try to come up with photos.

Shawn

At the high end of the spectrum I suspect, this beautiful catalog sold for $750

On the other hand, I picked up this really nice copy (without Ruth) for $69 on ebay

Here's another $70 piece

Catalogs have really come down in price over the last few years as I suspect some of the well known authenticators and equipment collectors have already picked up most of the catalogs they were looking for. I generally see them selling in the $30-$100 range these days.

Max,

Wow, those are great and do help me quite a bit.

He has a handful of the "Rule book" type booklets from the teens. One was from (I believe) 1913. It had Yerkes from the Red Sox on the cover. He also had a Federal League rule book from 1915. And a couple others from the teens. Most of his stuff is from the 50s (tons of media guides, yearbooks, Who's Who, etc.)which I've had a lot more experience with. Once he decides what he wants to get rid of, I'm going to try to help him move some on this board.

Thanks for sharing the pics and I look forward to doing the same!

Shawn

I would agree with Dan's estimates.

The old catalogs are like pieces of art to me.

I buy and sell a lot of catalogs, I agree with the above, prices have come down some over the last few years. Much of my own collection is D&M, Reach and Spalding. If you ever have questions, just email me

If anyone is in a "helping" mood, and has any D & M Baseball Catalogues from the 1910s, I have a question...

It's regarding D & M Reeded Shin Guards. Please email me if you have access to any info like this in the Draper Maynard Catalogues. Thanks so much! Mark

I just wanted to publicly and sincerely thank Clint. Not only did he locate the information I had been seeking... his D&M Catalogue Page came detached when he scanned it for me... such a bummer

Clint really went "above and beyond" to help a Forum Member. He provided info I could not find on Google (or anywhere else!) Just wanted to pass on my gratitude, and thank Clint for being one of the good people that make Net54 such a wonderful resource for collectors!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their information and sharing scans.

I picked up the two shown: Goldsmith '37 and Spalding '39 and a Reach,Wright & Ditson from '39 (not pictured). The Goldsmith is so great to look at. I love the illustrations. I don't own a vintage glove and not much memorabilia, but you can bet I'll be buying one now! Besides Ruth on the cover, the Spalding also has the great 1839-1939 Centennial logo on the back cover. If anyone has seen either of these sell before and can give a definite price range...that would be great.
