If you said the person was a true reformer and not a political hack who is truly unprepared to ever be president if the president died in office, I'd say Jeff is right and it is Teddy Roosevelt.

18 baseball players were named after George Washington but none have played since 1956....is he starting to lose his luster?

8 players are named after Thomas Jefferson and just 3 after Abraham Lincoln...none after William Taft but 2 got stuck with the worst president ever,Franklin Pierce. Amazingly only one player got stuck with the name "John Quincy Adams" but that was by choice. Charles E Strick changed his name on his own to John Quincy Adams Strick....very odd since there is no way he knew him personally and he wasnt alive while JQ was pres. Maybe he changed it to try and break his career long slump as a .164 hitter.

On a side note, I have planned for many years now to name my first born "Ulysses S Grant Hurricane" whether it was a boy or a girl but only recently have i stopped using that as my opening pickup line

John, Grant's middle initial "S" was not even real..it basically stood for nothing. You'll never get over on any women using that line.

TR -- the youngest man ever to be president.

And Bob, don't worry about Palin: stick her with a teleprompter in front of a faux Greek temple in front of 85,000 people and she'll look plenty presidential.

Edited to add: John, that "S" also stands for nothing.

1st, the S did stand for something. It stood for Simpson, which was his mother's maiden name.

2nd, he was born Hiram Ulysses Grant, and went by "Lyss".

3rd, when nominated to attend West Point, the Congressman who nominated him sent it in as 'Ulysses S. Grant', thinking that was his name. The Congressman knew that his mom's maiden name was Simpson.

4th, Grant tried to register as Ulysses H. Grant, but the school wouldn't allow him in if the appointment didn't match.

5th, so Grant adopted 'Ulysses S. Grant' to get into West Point.

6th, Groucho used to ask folks who was buried in Grant's Tomb. Grant wasn't and isn't. Grant died in 1885, the Tomb was built after he died, but while his wife was still alive. US Grant was entombed there 10 or more years after he died. His wife is there. I think there are some befriended or adopted children there, too.

So who said, "Knowing a lot about baseball is like knowing a lot about whittling." ???

Well, Frank that was my point: the S was not his given name, just his mother's maiden name. Are you the second Net 54 person who has read Grant's memoirs? Best presidential memoirs ever written -- and under the most pressure.

It's amazing how this thread got "side-tracked" to U. S. Grant so quickly ! ?

But, I'll play this "silly game" by paraphrasing Abe Lincoln....when some in Washington during the Civil War were encouraging
Lincoln to give General Grant the "Don Rumsfeld treatment"....by suggesting that Grant "was drinking to much".

Lincoln told them...."to find out what booze Grant was drinking and send the other Generals a case of it"

OK....BACK TO THE INTENDED TOPIC......

Sorry to get it off topic Ted,I figured Teddy Roosevelt was the right answer and then we moved on....I guess he is a little older than 40 by now. Is the answer Jerry Browne, the old Rangers 2nd baseman from the late 80's early 90's? I know they called him governor and hes in that age range now.

Paul, yes, and I agree regarding Grant's performance as President. Some thought that George Custer might make a run for the presidency had he not been killed at the Little Big Horn. That would have been interesting as well.

Custer always tried to pimp himself with the media, it would have been interesting for sure. Oddly enough...it was Grant's Indian Policy(one which Custer disagreed with) which cost him his life.

us grant was a terrible president but his memoir is definitely a great read. its incredible that he had to be injected with brandy just to be able to function. and a little known fact about his memoirs is that one mark twain was his publisher.

i believe the answer is teddy roosevelt. is it not?

Which is why there should be no period after the initial.

"You didn't know Teddy... and you don't know Mrs. Palin..."

Are you implying that Sarah Palin is a Teddy Roosevelt?

I can think of a few important differences, right off the bat. (Besides the most obvious one.)

Teddy went to Harvard.

Sarah went... where?

Teddy not only read a book or two, he wrote a few--as well as editing a magazine.

Sorry if I misinterpreted.

But I'm a little touchy when it comes to the most cynical choice of running mate ever.

We really are, to a large extent, a nation of morons. (And morons who are proud and happy to be so.)

David, as you know, despite the best efforts of the liberal media no one has ever come forward to say that Sarah Palin ever spoke in tongues. Of course, many people (and video) have come forward saying that Obama's 20 year spiritual advisor hates America and white people. But why quibble over facts?

By the way, as a lifelong Democrat who has never voted Republican in his life (wow, does that mean I might be slightly more objective than, say, the average angry liberal?) I agree that Sarah Palin was an incredibly cynical choice -- second only to the choice of Obama by the Dems.

We do have some odd people running on both sides. This was billed as the most important election of our time, and what we end up with is a bunch of mediocre and ill-equiped candidates.

Is that really the best we can do?

Ya know, Jeff, if I described myself as "a lifelong Democrat who never voted Republican in my life," I'd be right on the mark. Don't know where you got that "angry liberal" ****.

And Karl Rove didn't chose Obama. the Democratic primary voters did.

Of course, it's totally irrelevant what either Obama's or Palin's "spiritual advisor" believes.

But, Rev. Wright does have a valid reason or two to be pretty pissed at this country. I doubt Palin's pastor's reasons for believing that we're near the "end of times," or that speaking in tongues is a manifestation of being infused with the holy spirit, or that men and dinosaurs lived happily together, or... any number of other crackpot beliefs are as well-justified.

David...face it: the Democrats lost this election when they chose Obama over Hilary. I didn't think it possible that they could have blown this election considering the circumstances but, in fact, they did. You know it, Obama knows it and Karl Rove especially knows it.

Allow me to elaborate: he's a really bright man, but I'm disappointed at the lifeless campaign he's running. Whatever magic he brought to the table early on seems to have dissipated.

Just the fact that the race is a dead heat when he should be way ahead is not a good sign.

First, Jeff, I don't believe that's so. I think Obama will win.

Secondly, and most importantly (if you are right), it shows a total lack of cynicism on the Democrat's part. They (we) chose the person we felt was the best qualified, the person who would do the best job, and not the person who was most (easily) electable.

F**K Karl Rove.

There's still a month and a half to go, Barry. I think you'll see the Dems cranking things up.
(Lord knows, they've got enough material.)

And the debates should be a hoot.
