Default The Sport Hobbyist- July-Aug. 1962, Walt Corson on T206 dates

Posted By: leon

A nice article about T206 from long time (deceased RIP) collector Walt Corson. It is Walt's collection that Frank Nagy made a long trek to buy and is part of hobby folklore. I was fortunate to get Walt's original checklists several years ago.....(I might post a few more pages later)...regards

Great post, Leon. Thanks. Mr. Corson's article, THAT is what should be on this site.

Seems to me, without checking, that his dates are similar to Mr. Lipset's a few years later.

And Walt has Montgomery identified as the Montgomery Miners, from the Southern Association. I once thought that the white border cards were showing teams from the Southern League. But that league shut down in 1899, and teams regrouped to form the Southern Association for the 1900 season.

Thank you, Leon.

I find it quite interesting in comparing Corson's dates with Scot Reader's recent analysis.
Their issue dates coincide quite closely for the first two (150 & 350) Series.

Shown here is Scot's timeline diagram from his book......

Two points that Corson stated in his article need to be clarified:

There is some confusion regarding Corson's description of the 2 cards of Bill Dahlen. Dahlen's Boston
card is only in the 150/350 series. While his Brooklyn card is only in the 350 series.

The 2nd card of Neal Ball (Cleveland) is not in the 350 series, it is in the 460-only series.

In Corson's defense....I believe that it's only recently that the 460-only series has been identified as
a distinct series of its own. In the '60s, the last 110 cards were all classified in the 350-460 series.
