Default Vintage football -- advice on price?

Hi -- wondering if anyone could help us out with thoughts on a proper price for a fairly unusual item: football (not a football card, an actual football), must be about 55-60 years old, manufactured by "Hutch," carries the intaglio stamped facsimile sig of Bills/Browns QB George Ratterman.
Condition: pretty terrible. Looks like it was left out in the rain and snow since the AAFC folded. Not sure the leather can be brought back to respectable, although we'd try some baseball-glove restoration methods. Laces intact, though.
We're not selling, we're thinking of buying, but the vendor's asking price (not eBay nor anywhere else on-line) seemed a little high (at least for our microscopic budget), especially given the condition.
Your thoughts? Much appreciated...
