Default T206 UZIT show & tell....let's see these "blue gems"

It has been a while since we had a show & tell of UZIT brand T206's. The UZIT branded T206 cards were printed at the tail-end
of the T206 press runs in the Spring of 1911. Surveys have indicated that several of the 53 known T206 subjects with the UZIT
back appear more often than the others. For example, at least 5 samples of the following subjects have been confirmed while all
other UZIT cards typically range from 1 to 3 samples......

Cobb (bat off shoulder)
Jennings (both hands)
Latham
Wagner (bat on right shoulder)

If you know of more, please add them to this list ?

OK....I will begin this show with the two remaining UZIT's in my collection.

[linked image][linked image]

[linked image][linked image]

P.S.....regarding Leon's current POLL...." T206 backs will continue to go up? "

Certainly in the near future, BROAD LEAF 350 & 460, DRUM, brown & red HINDU, black & brown LENOX, and UZIT, will continue to
increase in value due to the law of "supply vs demand".
However, I voted "Don't know" simply because too many factors are in play here.

Having said that, at the Ft. Washington Show (circa 2006), I sold this Vg card of Wiltse (portrait with cap)/UZIT for about $600.
Subsequently, this exact card went for $1700+ in Barry Sloate's November 2008 auction. It goes without saying, these gems are
certainly still climbing in value.
[linked image]

Hey guys....why not proudly display your UZIT cards here and let's see how many we can come up with ?

Default Schlei Batting

This is the only one I ever owned (and just for a brief moment). It was in with a big lot I bought on Ebay in 2005. I 'allocated' a cost of $11 to it and sold it within a week for $114. Thought it was a home run... now I'm not so sure.

Hi Ted- i think i was the one who got that Uzit (Wiltse) from you! i then sold it thru Barry...they seemed (at one point) a little underrated, but are now clearly right at the top of the heap.

Here's my current Uzit (thanks to Scott L). it's one of the boldest examples i've ever seen. the ink is very dark & saturated.

Default Hi Mike S.

I remember meeting you and your Dad at the Philly Show in 2006 (or 2007). That Wiltse-UZIT purchase back then turned out to be a really great
(short-term) investment for you....congrats.

Interestingly, your Mullin is a great example of the more intense BLUE ink on some of the UZIT backs. Also, my Schaefer, and mine > your's Wiltse,
are other such examples.

Whereas, my Herzog, Jim B's Willis, and other UZIT backs appear to have been printed with a lighter, or porous blue ink. Anyhow, it appears to be
a phenomena very similar to what we have seen with the PIEDMONT 460, Factory #42 backs.

And then, this effect could just simply be due to fading ? ?

Thanks for your show & tell post.

Best regards,

TED Z

The above Sheckard (Glove Showing) is not my card but it’s my favorite Uzit because of its importance to the sets composition. Prior to it coming to market several years ago no subject that had been confirmed with a red Hindu back or Uzit back had been confirmed with the other. The Sheckard was the first subject to be confirmed with both red Hindu and Uzit and opened up the possibility that as many as 12 subjects may be found with both. The 12 possible are the 460 Only subjects that have all been confirmed with red Hindu. Until last year Sheckard was the only one of the 12 confirmed with Uzit. That is until a board member confirmed a Geyer with a Uzit back making it the second of the 12 subjects to be confirmed with both backs. Hopefully in time additional Uzit backs from this group will surface.

Possible Uzit/Red Hindu Subjects
  1. Crandall (Portrait w/ Cap)
  2. Devore
  3. Duffy
  4. Ford
  5. Gandil
  6. Geyer
  7. Hummel
  8. McGraw (Glove At Hip)
  9. Pfeffer
  10. Sheckard (Glove Showing)
  11. Tannehill (Chicago)
  12. Wheat

Hi Brian,

The Sheckard sold on Ebay in 2007 with the flip incorrectly identifying it as the No Glove pose. The SGC pop report however is correct. During a conversation with Art I was talking about the connection between Uzit and red Hindu and he pointed me to the sale of the Sheckard.

Does anyone know generally how much percent over a card's book value a Uzit back is worth compared to common backs? (Ex. a white back 56 topps mantle is worth 30% more than grey back version).

Default T206 UZIT show & tell....let's see these "blue gems"

Brian W

Thanks for posting some really sharp UZIT cards.

[linked image][linked image]

To date, altogether 54 subjects with the UZIT back have been confirmed.

There are 29 subjects in the 350/460 series that are found with the UZIT back. I am quite confident that the 350/460 series
list is complete (as it coincides with the AMERICAN BEAUTY 460 list for the 350/460 subjects). Several surveys have shown,
with a high level of certainty, that the AMERICAN BEAUTY 460 and the UZIT cards in this series were printed simultaneously.

350/460 series............29 cards

Ames (hands/air)
Berger
Bradley (bat)
Burch (fielding)
Cobb (bat off shoulder)
Conroy (bat)
Crawford (bat)
Jennings (one hand)
Jennings (both hands)
Jordan (bat)
Lajoie (bat)
Lake (no ball-St Louis)
Leach (cap)
Leifield (bat)
Manning (pitching)
McQuillan (bat)
Mullin (bat)
Overall (yellow sky)
Pelty (vertical)
Pfeister (throwing)

F. Smith (Chicago & Boston)
Steinfeldt (bat)
Tinker (bat off)
Wagner (bat on right shoulder)
Doc White (pitching)
Wilhelm (bat)
Willetts
Willis (bat)
Wiltse (pitching)

460-only series..............................25 cards

Abbaticchio (blue sleeves)
Ball (Cleveland)
Bell (follow thru)
Bridwell (portrait-cap)
Howie Camnitz (arms up)
Harry Camnitz (arms side)
Chance (bat)
Chase (trophy)
Geyer
Herzog (Boston)
Lake (ball-St Louis)
Latham
Marquard (follow thru)
Merkle (throwing)
Murray (portrait)
Oldring (bat)
Overall (blue sky)
Schaefer (Washington)
Schlei (portrait)
Schlei (bat)

Schulte (back view)
Seymour (portrait)
Sheckard
Tinker (bat on)
Wiltse (portrait-cap)

OK guys, the 460-only series list is still a work in progress....more UZIT cards from this series may exist. Please check-out
your T206's to see if you have any that are not listed here ? And, don't be shy about posting them.

Thanks,

TED Z

Thanks Rob D - I know there aren't a lot of folks that care to look that deeply into the sets composition (Hi Leon! ) but I thought a few may find that information interesting given that it involved two of the toughest back types. If a collector were able to secure an example of the same subject with both red Hindu and Uzit I think it would be something really fantastic.

Adam - That's three great looking cards.

Small world. I think I bought it about ten years ago. I think it was an ebay pickup, but may have been from one of Barry's auctions.

Default T206 UZIT show & tell....let's see these "blue gems"

Hey guys....if you are having a tough time finding a T206 UZIT card....or, you find one but the cost is sky-high.....then,
you have the option of acquiring a T80. These UZIT cards are more available, typical price for a nice one is $50 - $100.
And, you have acquired a very colorful gold-bordered T-card

[linked image]
[linked image][linked image]

In the Spring of 1911, American Lithographic (ALC) started producing their Gold-bordered T-cards. They issued a set of
50 military cards (T80). Of which the majority were printed with TOLSTOI advertising backs. Lesser quantities of T80's
advertise LENOX and UZIT cigarettes. And very rarely, T80's are found with the CAIRO MONOPOL or OLD MILL backs.

An ALC letter dated March 18, 1911 to Factory #30 (NY) states that a UZIT brand cigarette pack would include a T206
card and one military card in every pack. Another letter, dated Feb. 16, 1911, instructed Factory #30 insert a military
card and T206 card in each pack of TOLSTOI cigarettes.

In the Spring of 1911, the T206 era was ending and the gold-bordered (T42, T80, T205, etc.) era was commencing.

Default 460 Only Uzit/Red Hindu Question

Hi Tim,

For the few of us interested in the depths of the T206 set composition, why do you think there may only be 12 460-Only subjects that could be found with Uzit AND Red Hindu backs?

Best Regards,
Craig

Hi Craig – The reason there are only 12 possible subjects has a simple answer but the underlying factors of how it came to be only 12 are much more complex.

The simple way of looking at it is there are 46 possible red Hindu subjects. They consist of 28 subjects from the commonly referred to 350-460 Series, 12 from the 460 Only Series and the 6 super prints. Other than the 12 460 Only subjects the other 34 were not printed with Uzit backs.

Red Hindu Possible
28 - 350-460 (Uzit No Print)
6 - Super Print (Uzit No Print)
12 - 460 Only (Uzit Possible)

The Uzit subjects possible consist of 29 350-460 subjects and 46 460 Only subjects. All of the 350-460 and 34 of the 460 Only were not printed with red Hindu. Only the 12 that were printed with red Hindu are also possible with Uzit.

Uzit Possible
29 - 350-460 (Red Hindu No Print)
34 - 460 Only (Red Hindu No Print)
12 - 460 Only (Red Hindu Possible)

The composition of these two back sets puts these 12 subjects in a unique group that are possible with both red Hindu and Uzit backs.

I hope that helps and let me know if I need to clarify anything.

Craig

Simply stated......

Since 34 of the 46 subjects in the 460-Only series have been confirmed with the LENOX back.....that leaves 12 subjects
that are found with the red HINDU back (and indeed have been confirmed).

Remember the mutual exclusivity that exists between LENOX and red HINDU in this series.

Therefore, since Geyer & Sheckard have been confirmed with the UZIT back there is a good likelihood that the remaining
10 will eventually be found with the UZIT back.

Unless you break the Lenox or red Hindu into subsets there is no mutual exclusivity between the two.

Some red Hindu's are possible with Lenox.
Some red Hindu's are not possible with Lenox.
Some Lenox are possible with red Hindu.
Some Lenox are not possible with red Hindu.

There are very important subsets within the 460 Series printings but it's not as simple as applying mutual exclusivity. The first printing of red Hindu's consisted of only subjects from the 350-460 group and the super prints however the second printing was a mixture of 350-460 and the twelve 460 Only subjects. Careful examination of which subjects and when were included in these print runs, and those that were included or excluded in the Uzit print run, show that the two back groups were printed at different times and have no connection with mutual exclusivity. Breaking down the back groups into subsets is merely ignoring conflicting data to achieve a desired result that isn't accurate.

The Sheckard was the first subject to be confirmed with both red Hindu and Uzit and opened up the possibility that as many as 12 subjects may be found with both. The 12 possible are the 460 Only subjects that have all been confirmed with red Hindu. Until last year Sheckard was the only one of the 12 confirmed with Uzit. That is until a board member confirmed a Geyer with a Uzit back making it the second of the 12 subjects to be confirmed with both backs. Hopefully in time additional Uzit backs from this group will surface.

Possible Uzit/Red Hindu Subjects
  1. Crandall (Portrait w/ Cap)
  2. Devore
  3. Duffy
  4. Ford
  5. Gandil
  6. Geyer
  7. Hummel
  8. McGraw (Glove At Hip)
  9. Pfeffer
  10. Sheckard (Glove Showing)
  11. Tannehill (Chicago)
  12. Wheat
This is excellent information Tim- thanks.

Sincerely, Clayton
