Default Babe Ruth- Which of these 2 would you rather have??

Posted By: David Smith

Hello,

I saw these two Babe Ruth cards on eBAY (Lections and Herpolsheimers) and wondered which one the board members would rather have and why?

The Lection's doesn't look like a baseball card to me. The Herp.'s does. It's a much neater pose...

I'll take the cheaper card (Herp) - it looks like something that belongs in a baseball card collection.

I concur. Just dont like the looks of the first card. The pose in the second card reminds me of his rookie card - which is a great photo.

Let's say I respect the "Lections" more, but prefer the Herpolsh.

I prefer the Lections, because of the neat oddball design and obviously because that set is so tough to find in any condition (I'm still looking for my lections type). Needless to say, both of those cards are very, very nice.

There are some very rare and expensive Babe Ruth cards on ebay. I certainly would not mind owning any of them.

The Maple Crispette just listed is VERY nice, especially given its stellar condition.

Of the first two though, I would DEFINITELY go for the Lections - it's a much cooler looking card IMHO.

Most Ruth cards depict a seriousness which I do not feel was characteristic of his play. Both the Maple Crispette and the Lections show the man apparently enjoying what he is doing. I prefer the Maple Crispette for that reason.

To me the Lections Ruth is a prime example of a very rare card (much rarer than the T206 Wagner)that has little appeal or demand. Why? I din't really know but have a hunch that it is that old game card versus trading card chestnut. The Herpolsheimer is a great Ruth pose on a new variation and for those reasons I prefer it.

Wesley,

Excellent taste. In my opinion the V117 is THE best portrait of Ruth on any card.

Now if only the seller would pull out a Maple Casey Stengel to go along with that Ruth, then that would floor everyone!

Of the first 2, the Herp wins easily. As was mentioned elsewhere, the Lections, while I consider it a baseball card, is more a trade card than what I think of as a baseball card. While the design is interesting, if I am looking for a card featuring a baseball player, I want the card to feature the player, not something else.

With the addition of the Cripette, I'd prefer taht one over the first 2. I'm surprised PSA didn't put it in a "floater" slab. The huge gaps, top and bottom would worry me.
